Reflection

Mortality as Medicine

Death—as overwhelming as the loss of a loved one and as unconscious as our next exhale—is a part of our shared human experience, yet it is something we have a difficult time facing. I avoided it quite nicely until grief around the death of my father snowballed into a mid-life loss of identities and culminated in a head-on crash with my own mortality through a cancer diagnosis. I was mired in melancholy with the question Is this it? swirling in my head.

Lenten Retreat: Mortality Matters

Join the Center for Wellbeing for a transformative Lenten Retreat this Saturday, March 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the chapel.

We'll delve into the powerful theme of "Mortality Matters," exploring how contemplating our mortality can foster a deeper appreciation for life, strengthen our connection with God, and inspire us to live with greater purpose.

Discover how these reflections can enrich your faith and lead to a more intentional life. Lunch is included! All are welcome to participate in this enriching experience.

This Sunday, March 9 we are honoring Episcopal Lesser Saint Harriet Tubman at our two worship services; she was born in Dorchester County, Maryland in 1821 and died in upstate New York on March 10, 1913. Our Redeemer Daughters of the King (DOK) Harriet Tubman Chapter members will be participating in both services as LEMS, readers, intercessors and Verger. Daughters of the King is an international order of women who are communicants of the Episcopal Church and pledge to a life of prayer, service and evangelism. Our Redeemer Chapter members will be available in the Parish Hall after the 10 am service to share their journey and answer questions. A simple selection of baked goods and snacks will be served.

It's Sign-up Sunday!

This Sunday after the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. services we invite you to sign-up for a role in our Sunday morning liturgy for the month of April 2025. Bring your phone to scan the QR codes (assistance available) and sign-up to be a reader, intercessor, lay eucharistic minister or usher.

2025 Lenten Series

Mortality as Medicine

Have you noticed when a special trip or experience is about to end, each step along the way seems to be more precious? Imagine taking that consciousness into every day. Once we accept that our time on earth is finite, we are more likely to engage what is truly important now. This is the “medicine of mortality.”

Please join us for the Wednesdays of Lent, for a simple supper at 6:00 p.m., and at 7:00 as we learn from a dynamic line-up of speakers—a poet, a minister, a doctor, and more—each telling their meaningful story and inviting us to find more meaning in ours.

Download a flyer for the complete series here.

*Lenten Suppers*

Click here to let us know you will join us for supper before the presentations. $10 per person each evening.

Volunteers are needed for supper set-up, greeting and clean-up each week. Click here to let us know you will help!

March 12: Cynthia Terry

Musings on Mortality with a Hospice Chaplain

The Rev. Cynthia Terry has been a chaplain for all of her ordained career--30 years in higher education and currently with home hospice. Both settings have immersed her in grief, existential questions regarding life and death, as well as the joys and mundanity of life. Cynthia is ordained in the United Church of Christ, was raised in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and has attended various Episcopal churches with her wife and sons for many years.

2025 Vestry Nominations

What is a vestry?

A vestry is the equivalent of the “board” of an organization. The vestry consists of lay leaders who, along with the rector, are the legal governing and decision-making group in the church. They are responsible for the finances of the church, its buildings and grounds as well as hiring and supporting the well-being of the rector.

The vestry has 4 vacancies to fill for a three-year term ending in spring 2028. The vestry Nominating Committee seeks candidates with leadership skills, particularly people who are strategic and visionary thinkers. We also look for people who work well in groups with a consensus model of decision making. Please note: In accordance with our by-laws a vestry member must be a giver of record and a member of The Church of the Redeemer by baptism or letter of transfer. If you have questions about these requirements, please contact Ellen Chatard.

"Vestry 101", an introduction to vestry service will be offered on Sunday, March 30 following the 10:00 a.m. service.

Vestry nominations are due in the church office by April 6, 2025. The Annual Meeting will take place on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

Are YOU 80’s STRONG?

What is 80’s STRONG? We are a group of women and men who have lived 80 years or more—full of knowledge and experiences (OK, we’ve forgotten a few.) But there’s more to learn, more to share and more to laugh about.

We gather once a month to support one another, feel the Spirit, and learn about issues that are important at this time in our lives—and we have lunch. Last year, we heard from a doctor, a lawyer and a dream worker, among others.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, March 11, at 11:30 in the Women’s Council Room. We will end by 1:00. This month we'll hear from an expert on “green burials,” a way of burying our loved ones with dignity and minimal impact on the environment. Is this the way of the future?

Upcoming gatherings will focus on writing our own fairy tales, learning more about aging in place, and perhaps a field trip or two.

If you have achieved your eighth decade, drop by on Tuesday, March 11, and join us. You’ll like being 80’s STRONG.

Centering Prayer

The practitioners of Centering Prayer invite you to join us during the season of Lent to deepen your awareness of Divinity. Come BE with us, starting either on Tuesday March 11 or on Saturday March 15. Practicing, we move beyond words into the goodness and peace of Being itself.

We sit in centering prayer, and we also read from a book which gives us pointers about our practice. On these dates we will begin a book about Jesus’ life as understood from the perspective of an American Zen Buddhist: Resurrecting Jesus: Embodying the Spirit of a Revolutionary Mystic (2014) by Adyashanti—born Stephen Gray in Los Angeles.

We meet weekly, either Tuesdays from 6 to 7:15 p.m. or Saturdays from 10 to 11:15 p.m. Contact Sherrill Pantle for further information or to request a Zoom link or call 410-377-0381.

This Week in Sunday School

Sunday’s story from the book of Deuteronomy describes Moses preparing the people of God to journey into the land God promised them. Like the people in the story, classes will remember how God has helped them in times of need, too. We’ll recall when someone has been generous to us and explore giving “first fruits” as a way of practicing our own generosity and gratitude.

Sunday school begins at 9:45 in the classrooms. Anna+ and Liz will be there at 9:30 to welcome all teachers, students, and parents as they arrive. Questions and requests can also be emailed to Rev. Anna, Director of Children’s Ministries.

Our Sunday school is growing! Are your children ready to join? Please register them hereRedeemer’s Sunday School program welcomes three age groups: Pre-K (ages 3 and 4), grades K-2, and grades 3-5. Nursery care is available for children under the age of three. Contact Rev. Anna, Director of Children’s Ministries, with any questions.

Celebration of the Arts

Calling all artists! Please join us in our seventh annual art show, which will run from Easter Sunday (4/20) until Pentecost (6/8). Let’s celebrate the 50 days of Eastertide together by sharing works of creation that proclaim the joy of God's presence! *** All kinds of art and all ages of artists are welcome! *** Artists may offer their work for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the art program at Govans Elementary School. More details to follow in the weeks ahead.
