Clergy Reflection

Stories are significant and they mean so much to us. They always have. Stories connect us to one another, to those who were there when the story happened, and to those who aren't with us anymore. Stories say a bit of who we are and where we've been. They explain our smiles and our scars. Stories break open deep and abiding truths and they have a way of inviting us to go deep and abide with truth.

The sacred scriptures of any religion are made up of stories, in our case, stories of salvation. For some of us, familiar stories can be so personally powerful that we almost feel like we were there.

Updates on What’s Happening Around the Parish

Following from the initial dream work session by Thomasina Wharton and David Ware on Sept. 14, three groups of eight people have formed to begin group dream work - helping us listen for the guidance and wholeness that our waking minds often miss. Groups will meet three times between now and the end of the year.

About a dozen parishioners participated in a contemplative history walk last Sunday, learning how our church has participated in both harm and healing connected to slavery and Jim Crow. As a follow up, parishioners are invited to read the From Civil War to Civil Rights: History of Race at Redeemer before a Nov. 15 parish discussion.

Meanwhile, 11 house groups will begin to meet monthly, starting in October. The focus this year is on developing practices and habits together based on writings by Episcopal Bishop Steven Charleston.

Accepting Names for All Saints until Wednesday, Oct. 28

The Redeemer Choir will offer Evensong for All Saints on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 5 p.m. in the church. During the service, the clergy will read the names of those whom you ask to be remembered. Send an email with names to Amanda Kell or write them on the All Saints' sheet on the name tag table in the narthex. Please include a pronouncer if you think we need one. Names will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Confirmation Class for Youth

Do you have a youth who is 15 or turning 15 in 2027 who may be interested in deepening their faith through confirmation? Confirmation is the sacramental rite through which baptized Christians affirm their mature faith. Classes will begin in January for a spring 2027 confirmation.

We will meet regularly for about eight weeks in the spring; days and times will be set and shared in the winter. Confirmands will serve regularly as acolytes and readers during church throughout the year and attend monthly service activities with other parish youth. Sign up for confirmation. Contact Josh Laws with questions.

Handbell Choir Returning to Redeemer

We are thrilled to announce that a handbell choir is returning to the Church of the Redeemer. Originating in 18th-century England, handbells have become part of worship in churches worldwide. Playing handbells is a fun, low-pressure way to join others in musical fellowship and add to the beauty of worship.

Are you interested in ringing? Whether you’ve played before, or it’s your first time, ringers of all experience levels (high-school age and above) are invited to reach out as we start to think about rehearsal times, repertoire, and a schedule for ringing at services. If you are interested, please contact Bert Landman, Director of Music Ministry or Alex Mendelsohn, Handbell Leader.

Pray for Pilgrims Walking the Camino

After many months of preparation, additional pilgrims from Redeemer are on the walking portion of their pilgrimage. Please keep them in your prayers.

Interested in the Camino for yourself but not sure where to begin? Contact David Ware or Anna Noon to learn more.

Weekday Service Schedule

Monday mornings @ 8 a.m. on Zoom. Join Keith Johnson for Morning Prayer (30 minutes). Rooted in The Book of Common Prayer, this practice of psalms, scripture and prayer helps center our lives in God as the week begins. Click here to join on Zoom.

Tuesday mornings @ 8 a.m. in the church. Join David Ware for Holy Eucharist and a lively exchange on the Gospel reading.

Wednesday mornings @ 8 a.m. in the chapel. Join Maria Cristina Paglinauan for Embodied Eucharist, which invites gentle stretching, mindful breathing, guided meditation or centering prayer followed by a simple Eucharist. Yoga mats are welcome but are not required.

First Wednesdays of the month @ noon in the chapel. Join Keith Johnson for a Healing Eucharist. This service includes Holy Communion and prayers for healing, offering space to bring before God the needs of body, mind, and spirit as we seek God’s grace and wholeness.

Thursday mornings @ 8 a.m. in the chapel. Join David Ware for an Ignatian Eucharist. Ignatian Prayer is a centuries-old approach to spirituality that seeks to weave together the stories of our scriptures, the experiences of our lives, and the God who is present through it all. This Eucharist invites us to practice imaginative prayer, each week entering into one story from the Bible and letting Spirit bring it to life.

2026 Stewardship

O God, grant us wisdom and courage for this day: a discipline that helps us become the people we aspire to be, the strength to overcome the obstacles we encounter or create, a path to navigate local and national tension. The Spirit at Redeemer sustains us, and our pledge expresses palpable thanks: “I am your disciple Lord, and I commit to bring healing through my steps. I stand in solidarity with this community of faith, and I will serve God alongside them.”

A commitment of a pledge says “Yes. We’re all in! We belong here.”

Name Tags are Back!

We are caught up with making new name tags – please check the bins to find yours. With so many new faces among us – both in the congregation and among our staff members – we encourage everyone to wear a name tag. The name tag table is located in the narthex. If you are new to us or can’t find your tag, please make a temporary one with the supplies provided and sign up for a name tag on the clipboard.
