Clergy Reflection

Dear Folks,

Have you read the story of Noah and the ark lately? Children consistently rank it in their top three Bible stories, right after the Creation and before David and Goliath. But the groups studying Genesis with me this fall have consistently remarked, “There is so much more to this narrative than what I remember from Sunday School!” Written in exile, the poet gives voice to his people’s considerable pain—they are strangers in a strange land, refugees of a war in Israel, survivors in Babylon who have lost their country, their religion’s Temple, and perhaps even God.

This Sunday at 11:30

This Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in our south transept, join leaders from ReBUILD Metro who will share ReBUILD's significant progress in revitalizing our East Baltimore neighborhoods over the past year, including the most recent, exciting developments in Johnston Square. We will also hear about new opportunities to expand ReBUILD's efforts to eliminate concentrations of abandoned properties and rebuild communities in light of new city and state initiatives spearheaded by our partners at BUILD and their Build One Baltimore Now campaign.

Evensong for All Saints'

The Redeemer Choir will offer Evensong for All Saints' on Sunday, November 3, at 5:00 p.m. in the church. The clergy will read the names of those whom you have asked to be remembered.

This week in Sunday School

This Sunday in Sunday School, the 3rd-5th grade class is pleased to present a dramatic telling of the story of the blind man from the Gospel of John for the whole congregation at 10am worship. All Sunday school students are encouraged to stay with their parents for worship beginning at 10.

Service Opportunity for Teens

Are you a teenager looking for a way to increase your volunteer service hours? We have opportunities on Sunday mornings 9:30-11:30 in the nursery. You can help Kathy LaPlant take care of our youngest members while their parents participate in worship. Interested? See available Sundays here.

Thank You!

Last Sunday arrived with mixed emotions for me. I would no longer be the parish secretary but it was a wonderful morning seeing friends I hadn’t seen in years and many more helping to celebrate my years serving the Redeemer community. It was a lovely and humbling morning. I was touched by the loving send off. Thank you to Cristina who wrote new lyrics to “All thing bright and beautiful” and to Nancy Spies for planning the reception and to the many hands who helped decorate, serve, and clean-up. Wonderful food, cake, well wishes, thoughts, cards, hugs and gifts. At one point, Nancy Spies asked me, “Are you feeling the love?” I replied, “Yes, I am.” It is a good feeling to feel “the love.” Thank you all for everything!

Love,

Barb

BUILD Community Walks

Last Saturday, Cristina, Anne Bruder, Ted Winstead and I joined the BUILD walk in the Franklin Square neighborhood in West Baltimore. We gathered with about 25 other folks at Greater Harvest Baptist Church on West Saratoga Street for prayer and assignments. We then spread out in groups of 4-5 to knock on doors to ask folks what they like about their neighborhood. What challenges does their neighborhood face? And what are their hopes for the future? Each of the people with whom I spoke said they like the peace and quiet of their neighborhood and the respect they feel from their neighbors--they plainly love their homes, a feeling I certainly related to. And then, the challenges. They were distressed by the drugs in the neighborhood, the trash dumped in vacant lots and overgrown trees and weeds in vacant lots where vacant houses had been torn down. They were frustrated that calls to 311 went unanswered; one neighbor said that the person they hired to cut back weeds and trees discovered a dead body! Yes, they want the vacant houses dealt with, but that is still a far off goal. The drugs, trash and weeds need action now!
