Clergy Reflection

While I am not a sailor myself, I’ve spent enough time sailing on boats with experienced sailors to know and understand a few things.

Like how important it is to keep the deck clean and clear.

And how you need to take good care of ropes and lines, keeping them untangled and sorted.

And how it’s critical to be paying attention and be prepared to move and act at a given moment, in order to catch the wind just right, so you can ride it when she blows!

I find sailing to be a helpful metaphor when thinking about grace. While we are not the Source of Grace, we can choose to cooperate with Grace when She appears. We can choose to do our part in being ready to act, to move in a specific direction, to make a certain decision that helps to bring about more healing, more wholeness, in ourselves and in our communities. Or not.

At the Ivy Bookshop:

David Ware in Conversation with Hahrie Han

Thursday, October 3 @ 6:00 p.m.

RSVP here

The Ivy Bookshop welcomes Hahrie Han for a hometown event celebrating her new book Undivided: The Quest for Racial Solidarity in an American Church, the story of a faith-based program designed to foster antiracism and systemic change.

The book emerged out of the observation that in 2016, even as Ohio helped deliver victory to presidential candidate Donald Trump, Cincinnati voters also passed a ballot initiative for universal preschool. The margin was so large that many who elected Trump must have—paradoxically—also voted for the initiative: how could the same citizens support such philosophically disparate aims? What had convinced residents of this Midwestern, Rust Belt community to raise their own taxes to provide early childhood education focused on the poorest—and mostly Black—communities?

David Ware will join Han in conversation about the transformative possibilities for racial solidarity in a moment of deep divisiveness in America.

2024-25 House Meetings

House meetings offer fellowship and grounding.

Last fall we introduced the idea of small-group house meetings to connect individuals to each other in a consistent and meaningful way. Thirteen eight-member groups in the parish met once-a-month for a curated conversation, using a prompt from the facilitator along with a short piece of scripture for grounding. When we gathered in the spring to debrief the experience, 120 folks joined in a spirited conversation! House meetings make our large church more accessible, and provide an opportunity to be seen and known and reflect on our lives.

Many of you are continuing with a group; others would like to meet new people; and still more look forward to taking part in a house meeting for the first time. Everyone is welcome, especially as new people join us every week.

House meetings begin this Fall in October: sign up today! If you have questions, please contact Ellen Chatard. If the scheduled house meetings fill up please use this link to tell us the day, time and location that you are looking for and we will put some more groups together.

Name Tags!

With many new faces among us- both in the congregation and among our staff members we encourage everyone to wear a name tag. The name tag table is located in the narthex. If you have requested a name tag in the past please find yours in the bins alphabetized by last name. If you are new to us or simply can't find your name tag, please make yourself a temporary one with the supplies provided AND sign-up for a name tag on the clipboard. We will have one for you by the next Sunday! Thank you!

This week in Sunday School

Sunday’s reading from the book of James encourages followers of Jesus to pray for each other, especially when they are in need. Each class will learn about prayer and explore different ways, reasons, and times to pray.

Sunday school begins at 9:45 in the classrooms. Anna+ and Liz will be there at 9:30 to welcome all teachers, students, and any interested parents as they arrive. Redeemer’s Sunday School program welcomes three age groups: Pre-K (ages 3 and 4), grades K-2, and grades 3-5. Nursery care is available for children under the age of three.

Please register your children for the ’24-’25 Sunday School program year here. Questions? Contact Anna+, Director of Children's Ministries.

Barb Hart's Farewell

Barbara Hart, Redeemer’s long-time administrative assistant, will retire effective October 18. Barb joined Redeemer’s staff almost 29 years ago and has supported every aspect of our ministry. Her gifts of design and thoughtful listening have helped a generation of parishioners through both sorrow and joy. Please join us to celebrate Barb at a festive coffee hour after the 10:00 a.m. service on October 20.

It is the custom at The Church of the Redeemer to collect a purse for a departing staff member, in thanksgiving for their service. Please consider this gesture. Click here to make a gift online (choose Barbara Hart Farewell) or send a check made out to The Church of the Redeemer with "Barb Hart" in the memo line.
