My Work is Loving the World

By Mary Oliver

My work is loving the world.

Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird -

equal seekers of sweetness.

Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.

Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?

Am I no longer young and still not half-perfect? Let me

keep my mind on what matters,

which is my work,

which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished.

The phoebe, the delphinium.

The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.

Which is mostly rejoicing, since all ingredients are here,

Which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart

and these body-clothes,

a mouth with which to give shouts of joy

to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam,

telling them all, over and over, how it is

that we live forever.

Thanksgiving Week Schedule

The church office is closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Holiday Boxes of Cheer for Govans Elementary School

Got an empty shoebox or two that you can fill with a handwritten note or card, Christmas cookies, a juice box, and a warm hat OR scarf OR pair of gloves/mittens, before wrapping it up with holiday paper and a nice ribbon or bow?

Our partners at Govans Elementary School would love to collect these holiday boxes of cheer to distribute to some of their students and families.

You can start bringing your holiday boxes to church the weekend of Dec. 7-8 and no later than our 5 p.m. Lessons & Carols Service on Sunday, December 15.

Advent Wreath Making- This Sunday

This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent. During the season of Advent we wait in hope as we anticipate the birth of Jesus. One way to help us stop and wait patiently is an Advent wreath—and on the first Sunday of Advent, we will offer the opportunity to make an Advent wreath for your home. Wreath making will be available at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. in the parish hall.

Please bring a pair of clippers, and any greens from your yard that you can contribute for this activity. We will supply some general greens, pie dishes, oasis, floral tape and sets of candles—a contribution of $10.00 will help defray the cost of the supplies. Please bring cash or check with you on December 1.

Click here to sign up to make an Advent wreath with us.

Do you have greens that you would like to donate to make the wreaths? If so, please let Liz Kallmyer know. Thank you!

Advent Retreat - December 14

While this time of year is the busiest with holiday preparations and travel, creation takes its cues from another calendar and is slowing down. During Advent the first signs of winter come: the trees are brown, animals are hibernating, the sun sets earlier and earlier. There is more dark than light, and this gathering darkness gives the signal to our bodies: slow down, reflect, and savor.  Advent is a waiting time where the air is literally pregnant with the presence of God. If you are longing for some sacred space to experience Immanuel—God with you—this Advent season, the Center for Wellbeing invites you to an Advent Mini-Retreat, Saturday December 14, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. We will guide you through a time of intentional rhythms of devotion that awaken us to the reality of God’s presence. Come as you are and receive from the One who waits for you.
