e-Skinny June 7, 2019

We are still looking for monetary donations for Praise in the Park, but we are also going to need some bars or cookies (please no egg or cream type bars for food safety).  Also the food inspectors say they must be individually wrapped before coming to the park (just a bit of plastic wrap is sufficient).  It's a lot to ask, but please keep this in mind and plan on helping us with this little cookie "potluck".  It will be a great help and a yummy way to round out our lunch that day.

Are you getting excited? This should be so fun!

Sunday, June 23 after each worship service St. John will honor our Custodian, John Swiggum with a retirement reception in the Parish Hall! John will be retiring on  June 30th.

If you are interested in joining Altar Guild or being a part of the Prayer Chain, please let Kathy in the office know.

If you have a specific hymn or praise song that you would like to suggest singing during the summer months, please write the hymn number or song title on the back of your attendance slip. Melanie will work your favorites songs into the worship service.

There are Meals On Wheels sign up sheets on the glass case in
the Narthex.  St. John will drive the weeks of June 10-14th & June 17 - 21st. Thank you!

Stained Glass Ministry

We will meet at 1:00 p.m. and in the evening at 6:00 p.m. on  June 20 and July 18th.  We will try to work another one in July when we get a consensus on a date.
We've taken some time to learn how to make small crosses to send with Stephen Ministry. Now that we have the ground work we will make more of them and expand into jewelry and sun-catchers. There will be a minimal cost for some supplies if you make something for yourself. Money raised on items we make for the Fall Festival will go into the 150th Anniversary Fund. We are glad to give those of you that didn't get a piece of our historical glass another chance.  Please contact Janet at  petefishj@mchsi.com or call the office at 641-228-3397 if you are interested in being involved with this project! We will show you how to do it whenever you join us.

Summer Youth Activities

Summer Mission Trip 2019 - We will be going to the Black Hills of South Dakota
July 8-13, 2019. This trip is open to St. John students that have completed 6th-12th grades and their friends.
The Youth Board would welcome any donations toward the cost of fuel for the bus. If you feel called to donate stop in and see Linda in the Business Office. A note on the bake sale last week, they sold out; way to go congregation!  Win, win, they got funds and we got goodies.

SAVE THE DATES: July 30-August 2 will be Vacation Bible School! Registration will begin at 5:15 pm on the 30th.
  • Plan on having your kids attend from 5:30 pm-8:00 pm on Tuesday-Friday!
  • We will serve a light supper for the kids each evening.
  • VBS is open to kids in Preschool-5th grades.
  • Our theme this year is "Roar - Life is Wild*God is Good"

  • VBS kids will sing in church on Sunday, August 4
  • If you are interested in volunteering at VBS, please contact Laurie.

Praise in the park

We are going to have a Praise in the Park worship service on June 30 at 10 a.m.  We would really like to make this a fun celebration in our congregation and outreach to the community (and I have just learned that we are inviting Messiah to join us in this event). We are working out details, but have learned the vendor of the inflatables can provide liability insurance SO THE INFLATABLES AND GAMES are on again if we get donations. So many details to iron out, but we have good people working on that. We hope you support this morning in the park with your attendance and possible donation toward the activities.  A light lunch will also be served. We could also use  donations of wrapped homemade cookies or bars (see above) for our Cookie Potluck.
What Fun!

An Opportunity for You

2019 is the year of the Photo Directory.  The plan is to have slots August 6-8, September 19-21 and October 24-26.
It is strongly suggested the those of you involved with agriculture get your dates set early.  Also students, before going to college, should take advantage of the August dates.

I just made my appointment.  It works fine. Easy Peasy!

The Communications Board would like some help with this: to sign people up after services, to be there to sign people in on those days.  This is not hard work, just a bit time consuming and a lot for a few people to do; less if we have help.
If you  can help us please let Kathy know in the office and we will get a list going and will contact people later.

An Opportunity for this fall

We will be having a Fall Festival (It may have a different name later, but this is a heads up) on October 27, Reformation Sunday.  This is a joint effort between Stewardship and the Communications Board.  There will be a special Service of Stewardship on that day and then a meal, maybe some talent, a silent auction and some stained glass items will be for sale. Things are still in the planning stage, but the silent auction funds are designated for a Preschool Sign on the doors that face Gilbert Street. That is a $3500 project.  The stained glass will go to the Anniversary Fund and will be priced like last fall.
We will be looking for silent auction items, hand-made or new items, no used or rummage type things.  Think about this as you are doing your hand work (quilting, knitting, carpentry, etc,), gardening, taking that hog to the locker, putting together a gift basket, making pies or whatever is your "thing". It's time to be planning for this and Thank You in advance for your hard work and talent.
