STUDENT ACTIVITIES DURING LENT
During the season of Lent, we are asked to improve in the areas of fasting, almsgiving and prayer. Several activities have helped our students put this into practice. The House of Loyalty began Lent with its annual Prom Project drive, and students have donated several dresses and other items to help girls in Southern Indiana and Louisville who might not otherwise have been able to afford to attend their prom. The drive has been extended until tomorrow because of snow days. Also during Lent, the House of Loyalty sponsored the reading of traditional Catholic prayers during morning prayer. "Our goal is to help us all remember our Catholic roots and pray the traditional Catholic prayers that we sometimes overlook," said faculty sponsor Mrs. Kelly Quinkert-Hornung '87

The House of Truth is planning a service project that will actually take place after Easter by participating in the Give A Day: Mayor's Week of Service sponsored by Mayor Greg Fischer of Louisville April 18-26. The House of Justice held a raffle to donate to the St. Baldrick's Foundation. ( See story below.

Our students also recently participated in penance services in preparation for Easter. During Holy Week after Spring Break, the student body will participate in a Tenebrae Service on Holy Thursday. The Tenebrae Service is a solemn, candlelight service focusing on the emotions of Good Friday through scripture readings. On Good Friday, dismissal will be at 1:30 p.m. so that students may attend services at their parish with their families.

STUDENTS IN ACTION

SOPHOMORE HOPING TO RAISE
$10K FOR LLS' STUDENT OF THE YEAR

Sophomore Justine Oppelt has a big heart for helping out and a knack for compelling others to share their money to help those in need. Last spring, the news of a friend's relative being diagnosed with cancer compelled her to raise money for St. Jude Children's Hospital, and in six months she had collected nearly $1,800. Now she has accepted the challenge of raising $10,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Kentucky & Southern Indiana Chapter in just six weeks. Click here to read more.
BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM MAKES
IT TO SECTIONAL SEMI-FINAL
By Coach Andrew Grantz '07

The Boys Basketball team had a hard-fought season. The group of all underclassmen except for Junior Griffin Libs finished the season 9-12. Key regular season victories included winning the City Championship as well as advancing to the sectional semi-finals. I am very proud of how hard this team worked. We only had a handful of games against teams that were similar in size or experience.

The Pioneers will be returning everyone and adding two players who missed a combined 36 out of 42 games, sophomore Sean Morris and junior Max Leist. This year was a great learning year for our young squad. We are excited for our first summer together as they will have a chance to hit the weight room and become more comfortable in my system.
GIRLS BASKETBALL HAS HISTORIC SEASON
By Coach Brad Burden

The Girls Basketball team had a magical season full of many history-setting accomplishments. The girls ended the regular season with a school record for wins with a record of 18-5.  Key wins included defeating local rivals 3A Charlestown and 4A Floyd Central. They also defeated highly ranked Switzerland County in the regular season.

Then the team won the first ever sectional championship in school history, beating Paoli 69-60, then Crawford County 66-44.  The success and history making continued into regional, where the girls beat defending regional champs North Knox 68-47 and then No. 11 ranked Switzerland County 49-42 to claim the regional championship, another first for the program.

In semi-state, in front of a huge BLUE PRIDE CROWD, the girls battled the No. 1 team in 2A and No. 3 team overall in the state of Indiana close for three quarters before finally falling 61-41 to Heritage Christian.

The following girls received awards:
     - Michaela Hoke: HBCA Senior District All-State
     - Sara Gryboski: ICGSA Academic All-State Honorable Mention
     - Claire Rauck: ICGSA 2nd team All State
IBCA/Subway Small School Underclassmen All-State
     - Hannah Wolford: IBCA Small School Underclassman All-State Honorable Mention

The program says goodbye to three great seniors in Abby Hunt, Michaela Hoke, and Sara Gryboski.  The team will return its top four scorers and six of its top seven players. The program would like to thank all of those in the PHS community who have shown so much love and support for this team.

Girls JV Has Successful Season
By Coach Greg Ash

The JV Girls Basketball team also had a winning season. The team's record was 13-7, and the girls won the JV Holiday tournament for the first time in six years by beating Silver Creek and Charlestown.  The team's average loss margin was 11 points and average win margin was 19 points.
DANCE TEAM TO COMPETE AT STATE
Good luck to the Providence Dance team, which will compete in the Indiana High School Dance Team Association state finals on Saturday in New Castle. The team placed fourth in the IHSDTA South Regional earlier this month to earn a berth in the state competition. Congratulations!
TWO WIN LOCAL SPEECH CONTEST
Congratulations to senior Graham Wood and sophomore Abby Posey, who represented Providence in the Rotary Club of Clarksville speech contest. Graham came in third and Abby fourth in the contest, and each received a cash prize.
RAFFLE RAISES FUNDS TO FIGHT
CHILDHOOD CANCER

By senior Ashlyn Edwards

An idea many years in the making has finally come to life at Providence. Mrs. Chris Golembeski, who works in the Learning Differences Lab, first came up with the idea for a fundraiser a few years ago and the time was now perfect for it to happen. Last week the House of Justice sponsored the first ever raffle to benefit St. Baldrick's Foundation. Members of the House of Justice wanted to help kids their own age this year for their House service project. St. Baldricks, a charity focusing on research for children's cancers, fit the bill, and with its annual head-shaving fundraiser in March, the timing couldn't have been more perfect.

Every day last week, students in the House of Justice set up a table at lunch and helped sell raffle tickets. For a dollar a ticket (or three for $5) students could be entered into a drawing to win one of many prizes including: a senior parking pass for the month of April, a pass to get out of running for two days in PE, a pass to cut in the lunch line for the month of April, a chance to choose the music for bells on a Friday, a baseball season pass and football season pass, two tickets to Seussical, $25 to Target, $25 to Starbucks, or a $25 gas card.

At the end of the week, many students had bought tickets to support this charity and put their name in to win the various prizes. Then, winners were drawn for the various prizes; these students were: junior Jenna Gilley, senior parking pass; freshman Nathan Smith, skip running in PE; junior Kyle Oelker, lunch line cutting pass; sophomore Evan Messmer, bell music; sophomore Alex Rogers, football/baseball season pass; sophomore Megan Johnson, Seussical tickets; freshman Reece Davis, Target gift card; sophomore Jon Tolentino, Starbucks gift card; and senior Andrea Messmer, Kroger gas card.  While these students had a personal reason to celebrate, Providence students all took pride in helping such a wonderful cause. Through their generosity and the initiative of the House of Justice, $150 was donated to help this wonderful organization fight children's cancer.

SEUSSICAL LEADS SHARE LOVE OF SEUSS

By junior Maresa Kelly

One of the greatest accomplishments that can be felt as an actor is to bring joy to others. Some of the leads of the cast of Seussical, this year's spring musical, got the chance to feel this happiness last Tuesday, March 3, when they did a reading of Fox in Socks and sang to the children of the Silver Creek Primary School.

The cast members were invited by a teacher at the school who is a former Providence student, Casey (Ueding) Lilly '07. The children had been studying Dr. Seuss all week, in honor of his birthday (March 2, 1904). The students were able to wear crazy socks to school and were very excited to be visited by the cast. When asked what the kids thought about their visit, senior Sommer Dean (who plays Gertrude McFuzz) replied, "The students didn't expect us to sing a song from the musical. They really enjoyed it, and it was a lot of fun for all of us."

INAUGURAL COFFEE HOUSE A HIT

On Sunday, March 1, Providence presented "An Evening of Love Songs: A Coffee House Showcase." Coordinated by music teacher Mrs. Debbie Hill, this event featured students of every grade level at Providence and members of the Deanery Honor Choir.

Mrs. Hill said she was very pleased with the number of people interested in performing, and the crowd enjoyed every act that was performed. The number of people in attendance was greater than expected, and a total of $150 was raised for the Performing Arts Program. "It was wonderful to have the student, parent, and teacher support," Mrs. Hill said. "It is one of the great things about Providence - the community is always willing and excited to get involved."

Mrs. Hill is hoping to make the showcase an annual event.

MADDIE BIVENS VOLLEYBALL SIGNING
Senior Maddie Bivens has signed a letter of intent to play Women's Volleyball at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky. The Lady Blue Rays were undefeated in the Mid-South Conference in the regular season and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament this past fall. Maddie plans to major in nursing. Congratulations, Maddie!
GREEN DOT WEEK OF 'NO MORE'
The Green Dot Club is sponsoring a school-wide Green Dot Scavenger Hunt throughout this week. Each day, clues are posted in announcements and on Twitter and Instagram. Students score points for every clue completed. At the end of the week, the five students with the most points will win a prize.

The club's goal is to "cover PHS in green dots this week - all of our individual decisions (and completed clues) add up to big change in the PHS world," said club sponsor and guidance counselor Mrs. Jaimie McRae. The club's mission is to teach students to create and foster a culture of safe relationship behavior.
8TH GRADER ALREADY A TENNIS STAR

Eighth grader Halli Trinkle grew up with a tennis racquet in her hand and has played competitively since she was 8 years old. She regularly competes at tournaments throughout the Midwest in order to improve her ranking by the US Tennis Association, which ultimately will get her noticed by college recruiters. In recent months, she has beaten several top-ranked players in her age group, which includes players grades seven through nine. Practicing, traveling and competing takes a lot of time and hard work, but Halli said she enjoys it. "Every time I play, it's an opportunity to get better," Halli said. "I get to travel, I get to meet new people, and it just offers good exercise."

Halli's goal is to earn a scholarship to a Division I college that is known equally for its tennis program as its academics, she said. Her favorite subjects are math and science, and she is considering a future career in engineering. She would love to attend the University of Florida, Duke University or the University of North Carolina and has had several college recruiters notice her, including some from the University of Louisville, Indiana University and Michigan State University. Her parents graduated from U of L, and both played tennis there.

Halli also enjoys playing on the Deanery Girls Tennis team and is looking forward to playing this spring. She has played the No. 1 singles position every year and hopes to go undefeated this year. Last year, she lost one match because she wasn't feeling well that day, she said.

SEVENTH GRADE IN
ACADEMIC OLYMPICS FINALS

At the end of February, Providence and the Quick Recall team hosted the Deanery Academic Olympics. Teams from our Deanery schools in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades competed within their grade level. The Providence Junior High seventh grade team came in second place, falling to Holy Family in the finals. OLPH won the eighth grade finals, beating St. Anthony, and St. Anthony won the sixth grade finals, beating OLPH.

FUTURE PHS MOM'S CAREER CHANGE
FOR THE BETTER
It's not unusual for parents to work in our cafeteria. In fact, most of our cafeteria workers are parents, former parents or grandparents of students here. What's unusual about Debbie (Popp) Miller '87 is that she gave up a 20-year career as a nuclear medicine technologist - a job she enjoyed - to serve lunch in the PHS Cafeteria - before her older son is even a student here.
