E-News for July 17, 2019
From The Heart of The Pastor
" I thank my God every time I mention you in my prayers. I'm thankful for all of you every time I pray, and it's always a prayer full of joy. I'm glad because of the way you have been my partners in ministry of the gospel from the time you first believed it until now. I'm sure about this: the one who started a good work in you will stay with you to complete the job by the day of Christ Jesus. " Paul's words to the church at Philippi are my words for this church and my prayers are also words of joy. As we continue to share the mission and ministry of New World UMC, I am thankful for the heart of the people who John and I embrace as our faith family.

We have completed (as of this writing) two of the three "Faithful Focus" meetings and I also facilitated the same opportunity Tuesday with the staff and Wednesday with the youth. Some rich and engaging common themes are coming out of these meetings and I am excited to share how we can lean into this journey of faith together during the message on Sunday in worship. The desire is that the whole community of faith will join in the journey and every person invite another person in your family, neighborhood, workplace, or someone you know through community activities, to participate in the journey too. May we continue to Love God - Love Neighbor - and Make Disciples in the world around us.

Proud to be your Pastor,
Leslie
A Closer Walk with Christ
I have the honor to serve as the Spiritual Director of the Central Texas Conference Women's Walk to Emmaus #444 on October 10th - 13th, 2019. I have served on the CTC Emmaus Board for 3 years and rotated off in January of 2019. I have served as clergy on numerous Men's and Women's Walks since my own Walk #15 in 1990 and have been bountifully blessed by each walk I have served on. The Walk to Emmaus is based on the story told to us in Luke, chapter 24. The Weekend begins on a Thursday evening and ends on Sunday before supper. It is a once-in-a-lifetime retreat of spiritual renewal in which you fellowship, worship, eat, sing together and hear 15 talks of witness and core Christian learning (5 clergy and 10 lay person) over the 72-hour weekend. The Walk to Emmaus is intended for those who wish to grow deeper in their faith and live out that faith in their local church. I would be thrilled to have women from New World join me on this weekend. It is open to women of all ages. I have an application to attend and will help find sponsors for those who wish to attend. There is a cost for the weekend that includes lodging at Greene Family Camp in Bruceville/Eddy, Texas just outside of Waco and all meals and materials. If you are interested or have questions, please see me in person. Deadline to get your application in to the Emmaus Board Representative is September 15th.

Rev. Leslie Byrd
Wesleyan Heritage Tour
March 7 - 15, 2020
John and Pastor Leslie will be joining Rev. Kissa Vaughn of Copperas Cove UMC and Rev. Mike Kerzee of Smithfield UMC - taking persons from each church as well as friends and family members to visit all the places where John Wesley began the Methodist movement in England. We plan to visit during Spring Break of 2020 and are inviting people to join us and sign-up to attend this wonderful trip. I went on this trip in 1999 and have anxiously been waiting for the opportunity to go back and share it with others. We will begin a short study on the Methodist movement before the trip and as a United Methodist you will learn about our heritage. For more information, please see Leslie in person and click on the link below.

Project Transformation
New World’s Project Transformation reading week was a tremendous success!
Our 19 volunteers donated a total of 123 man-hours of their time last week – even more important than that is the positive impact we may have had by sharing our time and God’s love with young people.

A huge thank you to the following volunteers who spent part of their week loving our neighbors by listening to kids read at Project Transformation: Amy Baxley, Lynn Brink, Sarah Bush, Rev. Leslie Byrd, Skip Calandro, Sarah Cantrell, Carol Chaney, Nancy Dugan, Debby Gunn, Rev. Erin Jackson, Brittany Lee, Kelsey Lucas, George Lupton, Norma Lupton, Merl Pohler, Rhonda Pugh, Al Qualman, Susan Sloan and Steve Tuttle!
Altar Flowers
What would a Sunday morning worship service be without beautiful flowers to adorn the Altar? Altar flowers are a great way to honor someone, celebrate a milestone in life, or remember a loved one. The flowers may be taken home with you at the conclusion of the 11:00 Worship Service.

The 2019 flower chart can be found on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall or you can contact the church office to check on available dates. There are lots of opportunities to purchase flowers for July, August and September. The cost is $22 per vase. You are welcome to sign up to provide one or both vases. After you have signed up, simply make a check payable to New World UMC and mark it altar flowers or follow this link to pay online.

Mission Project for Vacation Bible School
During Vacation Bible School, we are going to collect items for Arlington Urban Ministries. The items are for our homeless friends and neighbors. We will have a contest to see who can bring the most items...the Girls or the Boys!

We want to invite the congregation to join us in collecting the following items.

The items are:
  • Cans of Vienna Sausage
  • Jello Cups (that do not need to be refrigerated)
  • Energy Bars ( that are soft not crunchy)
  • Pudding Cups (that do not need to be refrigerated)
  • Bug Spray Wipes

Let’s share God’s love in an amazing way with an “Out of this World” collection of these items.
