E-News for August 14, 2019
From the heart of the Pastor:
This Sunday we will be blessing the backpacks, the students, the parents, and all school personnel during worship. Back to school for me was always exciting. As a child it was exciting because I would get to see all my friends, find out who was going to be in my classes, who I would eat lunch with and what teachers I would have. As a teen, it meant back to tennis team, art classes, seeing John every day and finding out what classes we had together, and studying with my best friend, Brenda. As an adult, it was exciting to get my household back into the routine and network with other parents, volunteer at the school, and bless the teachers and leaders in the church where I served who were also teaching children and youth.

As you can see, for me it was all about the relationships. I was a good student and learning came easy. Whenever our children struggled with learning, we sought to connect them with people who could guide and equip them. We taught them that education was important, but we also taught them that how we care for and get along with one another is equally important.

This school year is a fresh start for families of all shapes and sizes. Whether you are starting Preschool or entering into college on some level – it is a fresh start with new learning and expanding the mind to learn how to better live and love in this world. And here is the other truth – God is with us every moment of each day. His presence is powerful. We have the opportunity to show the love of Jesus through what Jesus taught us and that means we also have to be about the education of faith.

Back to school is the perfect time to also get back to learning God’s holy Word. Through Worship, learning in the Sunday morning class offerings for all ages, and setting aside time to study the Word, teach prayers, and when around the table sharing our blessings from the day as well as praying for our struggles. I invite each of you to find a way to learn and grow further in your faith walk through study. We are life-long learners of the faith and it is now time to go back to school.

Proud to be your pastor,
Rev. Leslie Byrd
MARCH 2020
Did you know that John Wesley was one of the first to visit in prisons, establish orphanages, wrote a small book on home remedies for the sick? There is a great deal of history and learning about the founder of the Methodist movement to learn. I want to invite you to join me as we travel with Educational Opportunities, along with the pastors of Smithfield UMC and Copperas Cove UMC, on a trip of Wesleyan Heritage to England in March of 2020. There are still spaces available for this breathtaking trip. For more information, or to sign up for this trip, please contact Leslie and pick up a brochure. We will complete 4 sessions of history and study before the actual trip and we would love for you to be a part.

Trustee Committee Update
Starting next Monday, August 19 th, the main entrance doors will be locked at all times, except on Sunday mornings. This is one more way we can ensure the safety of our preschool children, staff, visitors and groups who use our facilities for meetings. The office staff is in the process of creating unique door codes for each group that will allow them access to the building in the evenings. Those will be distributed starting this week. For questions or to receive a code for your group or function, please contact Heather James ( heather@nwumc.org).

Wesley Group
Sundays 6:30 – 7:30 pm in Room 28
When he founded the Methodist Church in 18 th Century England, John Wesley, assembled small groups to reach out, offer support and provide accountability and religious instruction to one another. This practice continues today in the Wesley Group. Wesley Group is a group of people who are looking for a closer connection to Christ. Each week they examine their relationship with Christ and how God is moving in their lives. The current group will resume meetings this Sunday, August 18 th at 6:30pm.  You are invited to join the group!

New Groups can form and meet on different days with leadership provided to them if Sunday does not work for you. You are invited to check out this group and do as Jesus suggested, “Come and see.” For more information, contact Sarah Cantrell 817-461-8727 or sjc0317@aol.com .
BLESSING OF BACKPACKS, STUDENTS, PARENTS AND TEACHERS for a new school year is on Sunday, August 18 th during the 9:30 am service. During the 8:00 am and 11:00 am service, we will also pray for the students, parents and teachers in a special way. Students from preschool age all the way through those who will be attending College are invited to bring their backpacks, totes, or lunch boxes and we will pray for a year guided by God’s wisdom, the love of Jesus and the presence of the Holy Spirit to watch over these young persons.

Mission & Art Nights
Looking for an outlet to serve your neighbors, to be creative or to learn more about God?

Salvation Army Mission and Art Nights resume weekly on Monday, September 9.

Each Monday evening, 6:00-8:00 pm, New World volunteers lead and participate in art workshops with the residents of Arlington’s Salvation Army Family Shelter. It is a beautiful chance to serve our neighbors, have a relaxing and fun evening of volunteering, and to learn how God is at work in our neighborhood. The evening schedule includes set up time, a short devotional, a variety of art projects and clean up time. Volunteers are needed to help with both children and adults, and no artistic talent or experience is required.

Donations of broken jewelry/beads, fall craft supplies and gift cards to local craft stores are appreciated. To get more information or to volunteer, contact Rev. Erin at  erin@nwumc.org .

New World loves our college students! We send out three care packages during the year and would love to include your student!
