Our Core Values:
Spiritual Growth. Welcome. Justice-seeking

Members and friends of FCC supporting our Moderator Randy VanDeventer at the Central Association meeting after his successful Ecclesiastical Council.

Nine FCC folks attended the annual Jazz on the Green fund-raising event for Friends in Deed. Another way to support FID is to buy a Christmas Tree from Saint Mark's Episcopal Church in Altadena. The proceeds from the annual sale go towards FID. They are fresh trees from the Pacific Northwest and the deadline for ordering a tree is Wed. Nov. 14th. Pick-up day is Sat. Dec. 8th. go to friendsindeedpas.org website to order your tree and support Friends in Deed at the same time!

Reflection for Worship. . .
Finding Joy
Job 1:1, 2:1-10
The story of Job and his suffering for his faith is not only a religious tale but also a kind of cultural icon for the depth and extent of possible human struggle. We may be troubled by God "offering up" Job as one who cannot be broken, a "perfect" example of faith and integrity; clearly, the writers are anxious to make the contrast with anyone who would deny God for any amount of struggle or concern as dramatic as possible. Even those closest to Job recommend that he not stick with his allegiance to God and opt for relief from his pain. In a reflection entitled "Finding Joy" we will consider those things that we don't count as struggle because of our investment or commitment in an outcome. We all have persons and attachments that test our threshold of love - is it possible that one or more of those could offer joy when they are not put in jeopardy as with Job?! Join us for worship at 10AM in our Chapel this Sunday!

Thanks for bringing in your old shoes to be repurposed!!

Transition Update
Our staff and volunteers continue to work faithfully on sorting and packing items to store or take with us when we move to our new location in the coming months. Many thanks to our Music Director Connie Washburn who undertook a project this Summer to sort and catalogue our vast music library in preparation for the move. Our intent is to stay in our current space until the end of December and then begin the process of moving our possessions to a nearby new space in January. We would likely begin worshiping in our new location in February.
Last week, our Church Council has reviewed and suggested minor revisions to a lease with a Pasadena area church for space. Once we have the revised lease document from them we plan to announce the location and the details about our new space for all FCC folks.  Council will hold a Forum after worship to present the terms of the lease and respond to any questions and concerns about our move.  As our Bylaws indicate, the Council has the authority to act on behalf of the congregation unless we are selling or purchasing real property, calling a pastor(s) or changing the terms of our investment funds. Church Council is grateful for everyone's support and patience during this historic and exciting time in the life of our congregation!
The Scout Team will continue to look at available properties in the Pasadena area for the foreseeable future, with the support of our Realtor Carl Whidden. The Scout Team will continue to ask the congregation and Council for input as they look at properties in the months ahead. You are also free to send your suggestions to members of the Scout Team or either of our co-pastors. Everyone's input is welcome and important. Many thanks to our Scout Team: Kim Story, Carolyn Olney, Heather Bland, Jeff Tyler, Sue Miele and Randy VanDeventer who, along with our pastors, have taken the time and energy to look at a number of properties and engage in discussion with a number of owners and church leaders in Pasadena this past year.

5th Annual Level Ground Festival Oct. 5th-Nov.  3rd, 2018

There will be five events as part of this festival which is an arts cooperative that provides creative access to diverse artists and audiences. This year there will be a
stand-up comedy show and three other projects which explore the intersection of queer identity, body image, and the nature of self. Our FCC Lambda group and our Church Council have
donated $750 to help sponsor this year's event. Info can be obtained at on levelground.org/festival. All events are free; there will be an opportunity to donate when you reserve tickets if you wish.

Randy's Ecclesiastical Council
Several of us from FCC went to the Central Association Fall Meeting last Saturday to hear Randy VanDeventer respond to questions about his faith journey and his ordination paper.  Representatives from over twenty churches were impressed with Randy's writing, his ability to articulate his call to ministry and his sense of the direction of the church.  Randy was unanimously approved for ordination and a service will be planned for the coming months.  Congratulations to Randy and Meagan!

The meeting was held at the beautiful First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, on the corner of Commonwealth and 6th, pictured below in the reflection of the building across the street. This church was independent until 2017 when they chose to affiliate with the United Church of Christ. Pastor Marlene took a picture of the building, the first "all-reflective glass building in the country."  (LA Times Aug. 25, 2004) It was also the building where Marlene's father had an office when they first moved to Los Angeles in 1968. We just learned that long-term church member Jacquie Langdon passed away in May of this year. We pulled out her file in our church office and discovered an article about her late husband Robert Langdon Jr. who passed away in 2004. Turns out the Robert's architectural firm designed the glass building! Small world. The Langdons joined FCC Pasadena in 1951. It is heart-warming to think of all the special things current and former members of FCC Pasadena have contributed to Pasadena and the wider community.

Rev. Leo Lynch is installed as an officer in the Central Association and will serve on the Nominating committee. Thank you Leo for serving in the wider UCC! Rev. Stacy Thomas and Pastor Marlene Pomeroy also serve on committees in the wider UCC. If any church members are interested in getting more involved in our local Association or the Conference, please let Rev. Leo know!!

CD Copies of the Sept. 8th Program
Nina has made us copies of the Sept. 8th program and they will be available for anyone to pick up starting this Sunday. The suggested donation is $5 for the 80 minute CD. Many thanks to David our audio engineer for taping the event and for Nina for making copies for us! You may also listen to the entire program by using the link on the home page of our church website: uccpasadena.org

Youth Happenings for this Fall - Outreach Work and Confirmation

We have outreach outings this Fall for our middle and high school youth. Our hope is to offer two events each month. Please let us know if your youth can attend.
The next project is collecting used sport shoes each week. The next outing to Friends in Deed food pantry is Saturday Oct. 27th from 9-11am.
Our outings/projects will include: an athletic shoe drive to re-purpose old athletic shoes (see boxes in the church office and chapel for your drop-off), volunteering at Club 21, putting together care packages for Ronald McDonald House, sponsoring a family for the holiday through Friends in Deed, and visiting members of our church. The Youth Outreach Planning Committee is: Lu Burd, Meagan VanDeventer, Jeff Tyler, Neva Orr and Pastor Marlene.
Pastor Marlene will be in touch with parents of all 7th-12th graders in the next few weeks about their interest in a Confirmation Class. Confirmation is a time for young people to learn about the traditions of the Church and God/Jesus/Holy Spirit, explore their faith, and determine if they would like to be confirmed. Pastor Marlene will be in touch with parents in the next few weeks to find a time for an initial meeting. Parents may also be in touch with Marlene with any questions. Pastor Marlene will also be recruiting sponsors for our youth.
