   Twenty-First Sunday After Pentecost
October 14, 2018

Our Core Values:
Spiritual Growth. Welcome. Justice-seeking

We are honored to host the Annual Aid Africa Fund-Raiser in our parlors on Saturday November 3rd. See article below for details about the ongoing work of Aid Africa and please RSVP ASAP!!! NOTE: as a special perk for sponsoring the event, FCC folks can bring a second guest for free with their paid admission. The guest must be a non-FCC person who is relatively unfamiliar with the work of Aid Africa - our goal is to continue to widen the knowledge and support of the projects that Aid Africa is doing with local Ugandans.
Reflection for Worship. . .

Mark 10:17-31

When people think about the teachings about money and the Bible, they often remember this particular story of Jesus telling the rich man to sell everything he owns; and then people seem to remember that Jesus also said that it would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of the needle than for someone rich to enter the kingdom of God. As perplexing as that saying is, the message is clear - if you are wealthy, heaven is elusive. Or so the Bible says. Or does it? A closer reading of this narrative is far more detailed and nuanced than the Reader's Digest version of it (remember that publication??!). If we look closer at the story there are many things going on - the desire to be good and in sync with one's teacher; Jesus' reading of the man and what was really haunting him (his love of money above all else); the teaching of Jesus about wealth (was it descriptive or prescriptive?); the assurance of Peter that if we sacrifice "stuff" we will be rewarded in other ways; and last but not least - the reminder that nothing is impossible for God. It's an important story to remember and ruminate on - I invited you to do so this week in preparation for worship on Sunday. And ask yourself - what would Jesus see in your life that is a stumbling block for you? It may or may not be money!!!
Hope to see you on Sunday!
-Rev. Marlene W. Pomeroy
Also on Sunday:

In this week's service we will not only hear our own choir, but also the lovely flute music of Lilly Lukic.

After worship/coffee hour our Council will meet to go over monthly financials in the east parlor.

Also This Week
Used Athletic Shoe Drive Continues:
We now have overflowing boxes in the church office and in the chapel each Sunday to receive your used and old athletic shoes! Any brand or type may be donated. Please keep bringing them and the church school children will drop them off to the local NIKE store where they will be sent to be transformed into playgrounds, running tracks, turf fields, etc. NOTE: any brand of shoe is accepted but they are unable to use sandals, dress shoes, boots or shoes with metal cleats/spikes. Thanks for bringing in your old shoes to be repurposed!!
Aid Africa Fund-Raiser Sign-Up
We continue to have sign ups sheets on Sunday for folks to help bring food for the Nov. 3rd Fund-raiser. See details below. Cost is $60 per FCC member - but you can bring two for the price of one if your second person is a non FCC person unfamiliar with Aid Africa!
CD's of the Sept. 8th Celebration are available Suggested donation is $5. See Nina during the week or one of the pastors on Sunday for your copy. There is also a link to the event on the home page of our website uccpasadena.org
Transition Update
Our staff and volunteers continue to work faithfully on sorting and packing items to store or take with us when we move to our new location in the coming months. Many thanks to our Music Director Connie Washburn who undertook a project this Summer to sort and catalogue our vast music library in preparation for the move. Our intent is to stay in our current space until the end of December and then begin the process of moving our possessions to a nearby new space in January. We would likely begin worshiping in our new location in February.
Our Church Council will review the final lease with a Pasadena area church this week. Once we have the revised lease document from them we plan to announce the location and the details about our new space for all FCC folks.  Council will hold a Forum after worship to present the terms of the lease and respond to any questions and concerns about our move.  As our Bylaws indicate, the Council has the authority to act on behalf of the congregation unless we are selling or purchasing real property, calling a pastor(s) or changing the terms of our investment funds. Church Council is grateful for everyone's support and patience during this historic and exciting time in the life of our congregation!
The Scout Team will continue to look at available properties in the Pasadena area for the foreseeable future, with the support of our Realtor Carl Whidden. The Scout Team will continue to ask the congregation and Council for input as they look at properties in the months ahead. You are also free to send your suggestions to members of the Scout Team or either of our co-pastors. Everyone's input is welcome and important. Many thanks to our Scout Team: Kim Story, Carolyn Olney, Heather Bland, Jeff Tyler, Sue Miele and Randy VanDeventer who, along with our pastors, have taken the time and energy to look at a number of properties and engage in discussion with a number of owners and church leaders in Pasadena this past year.

5th Annual Level Ground Festival Oct. 5th-Nov.  3rd, 2018

There will be five events as part of this festival which is an arts cooperative that provides creative access to diverse artists and audiences. This year there will be a
stand-up comedy show and three other projects which explore the intersection of queer identity, body image, and the nature of self. Our FCC Lambda group and our Church have
donated $750 to help sponsor this year's event. Info can be obtained at levelground.org/festival. All events are free; there will be an opportunity to donate when you reserve tickets if you wish.

CD Copies of the Sept. 8th Program
Nina has made us copies of the Sept. 8th program and they will be available for anyone to pick up starting this Sunday. The suggested donation is $5 for the 80 minute CD. Many thanks to David our audio engineer for taping the event and for Nina for making copies for us! Youth Happenings for this Fall - Outreach Work and Confirmation

We have outreach outings this Fall for our middle and high school youth. Our hope is to offer two events each month. Please let us know if your youth can attend.
The next project is collecting used sport shoes each week. The next outing to Friends in Deed food pantry is Saturday Oct. 27th from 9-11am.
Our outings/projects will include: an athletic shoe drive to re-purpose old athletic shoes (see boxes in the church office and chapel for your drop-off), volunteering at Club 21, putting together care packages for Ronald McDonald House, sponsoring a family for the holiday through Friends in Deed, and visiting members of our church. The Youth Outreach Planning Committee is: Lu Burd, Meagan VanDeventer, Jeff Tyler, Neva Orr and Pastor Marlene.
Pastor Marlene will be in touch with parents of all 7th-12th graders in the next few weeks about their interest in a Confirmation Class. Confirmation is a time for young people to learn about the traditions of the Church and God/Jesus/Holy Spirit, explore their faith, and determine if they would like to be confirmed. Pastor Marlene will be in touch with parents in the next few weeks to find a time for an initial meeting. Parents may also be in touch with Marlene with any questions. Pastor Marlene will also be recruiting sponsors for our youth.

At an "Empty Bowls" dinner, you get a beautiful hand-crafted bowl for your dinner and then you get to take it home with you.
We'll have some auction items and some entertainment. We'll have some of our previous visitors to Uganda speak briefly about their memories of Aid Africa.
Please join us! Bring friends! Bring children! Just click here to go to our web site to buy tickets. If you live too far away, you're still welcome to make a donation. The work we do depends on your generosity.
Please speak to Joey Bland, chairperson of our Discipleship Ministry, or Peter/Irene Keller for more information.
