Reflection for Worship. . .

Settling In
Luke 5: 1-11
In the past few years our congregation has worshipped each week, taught our children about our faith, offered care to one another, welcomed new friends and visitors who are trying to follow God - in addition to caring for employees, meeting to plan our future, administering our finances, updating our files, volunteering in outreach programs - the list goes on and on. Then we took a loan to work on repairs for our building, had an inspection report prepared on the needs of the building, listed the building for sale, reviewed offers and closed on the sale of our building in 2018. Whew! Not to mention sorting, packing, moving, unpacking over the past 12 months - anyone feeling like it is time for a break?! In a sermon entitled "Settling In", we will consider ways in which faithful persons can take a break from the labors of our lives and our church - and still stay faithful! Come join us for a time of worship and kinship - remember parking spots begin to open up at 11:15AM - worship begins in the Chapel at 11:30AM.

Budget Forum
This Sunday after worship we will have a chance to review a draft budget for our church for 2019. Vice Moderator Krysty Leckrone and Moderator Randy Vandeventer will coordinate the presentation - members of Budget include: Don Hughes, Joey Bland, Barb Bonzo, Elizabeth Lanski, Jeff Tyler, and representatives from our Ministries. Come join us - projections indicate we have no debt, no deficit and promising plans for funding new ministry going forward. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall after worship. Sallie will provide a light lunch for us sine we will be meeting through the lunch hour from 12:30-1:30.

Also this Sunday
Parking should be easier this Sunday since the Methodists worship at 10 and should vacate some of the parking spaces near the building for us by 11:15-11:20. You may also park in the Kaiser lot each Sunday until 2 p.m. enter that lot on El Dorado. Five dedicated spots for SENIORS will be right near the church for those who do not want to walk very far. There is also free street parking surrounding the church if you come ealrlier. Sallie will be on hand with another staff person to help you get oriented in the FUMC Chapel. There are no steps to maneuver from the parking lot to the Chapel.
Our Choir will practice at 10:30 with Connie in the Chapel and the Bride's Room (adjacent to the Chapel) will be open for us to gather in and/or drink coffee/tea from a cart for those who come a few minutes early. The regular Coffee Hour and drinks will be ready for us in the Fellowship Hall after worship each week.

This Sunday our children will go to the Nursery as usual with our nursery providers (there will be some overlap with FUMC children the first 15 or so minutes each week), and our Church School class will be held up in our 3rd Floor Main Office.

Church School will be led by Jeff Tyler/Neva Orr this Sunday in our main office space on the 3rd floor - room 302 at the top of the stairs.

Looking Ahead:
Saturday Feb. 16th is our next date to help unpack and stock the shelves at the Friends in Deed Food Pantry. Lu Nguyen (formally Burd) is coordinating the list of folks. Please speak with her if you can attend from 9-11 a.m. We need 6-10 children and adults.

That evening the Lamplighter Group is attending the San Gabriel Lunar Celebration. See details below.

On Sunday Feb. 17th is our next Bad Weather Shelter date. Please sign up with Joey Bland if you can help out with setting up cots and preparing and serving food that evening. See article below.
Our Winter Business meeting will be held after worship on  Sunday Feb. 24th starting at 12:30. Please plan to bring potluck food to drop off to the Fellowship Hall before worship so that Sallie can have the food ready for us.

Lenten Activities & Dates
Pastor Marlene will be putting together a Lenten Reflection Booklet this year. If anyone is interested in writing a brief reflection for the booklet, please let her know at fccrevs@yahoo.com. Writers are invited to gather at the Co-Pastors' house on Saturday Feb. 23rd to help in your writing. We will gather together to pray, talk about the themes for our reflections, do some Soul Collage work with the Rev. Anne Cohen, and hopefully get the juices flowing for your reflections. The booklet will be available for anyone to use during the 40 days of Lent.
Shrove Tuesday is March 5th and we are invited to join FUMC in their Shrove celebration which takes place outside on the lawn with a jazz band, painting and pancakes. Please let Pastor Marlene know if you would like to help cook with the FUMC Men's Group. And please plan to join everyone for the festivities. More details will be forthcoming.
Ash Wednesday will take place at the La Canada Congregational Church with newly ordained Rev. Randy VanDeventer as the preacher for the evening. This is a Area UCC Ash Wednesday Service with our 6 area UCC churches. We will gather at 6:00 for a meal in their Fellowship Hall, followed by a brief combined choir practice (music is forthcoming) and then a 7 p.m. service in their sanctuary. All are invited and welcome to attend. The meal is being catered by the La Canada church.
Palm Sunday is April 14th and our Membership Ministry (Lu, Kevin, Kim, Tara and Pastor Marlene) have planned another fun day in the park after worship. We are headed back to Grant Park, located just 1 mile east of us. We have the overhang and grassy area reserved for us from 12:30-4:30. Plan to come and enjoy an afternoon together. The day will include our Annual Easter Egg Hunt.
Maundy Thursday is April 18th and we will have a supper and worship this evening. Details TBA.
Easter Worship will be held in the Chapel on April 21st at 11:30.

Hi Everyone,
Happy New Year! I hope you and your families all had a very nice holiday. Here at Friends In Deed, we finished a very busy 2018 with the biggest "Christmas for the Kids" yet. I'm sorry that it has taken me until the end of January 2019, to say thank you, but our 2019 started as busy as 2018 ended.
As I said, this was the biggest "Christmas for the Kids" yet - 237 children were signed up. And every child received multiple gifts. We managed to get everything organized on Saturday, so that we were ready to go on Sunday. When Sunday arrived, we had Christmas music and lots of Christmas cookies, candies, and more.
We couldn't do this event without all of your support. 237 children! That is almost 20 more children than signed up last year.  I thank you all for being so generous and caring for the families of our community. It moves me to know that the FID family is so supportive and compassionate. Please pass on my thanks to any of your colleagues, congregation members, friends, and families that helped make this event so successful.
I know that it is only January, but if you are interested in taking part again this year, please let me know.
Thank you again for making my job so easy and for making so many children happy at the holidays. I wish you all a very happy and wonderful 2019.
Best regards,
Tim (FID Food Pantry Manager)

Bad Weather Shelter Meal
Our first date to help at the shelter was cancelled since the shelter was not activated by either cold temperatures or rain that night.  Our next date to volunteer is Sunday Feb. 17th. Please plan to arrive at 5:30. Joey Bland is collecting names for this evening - please email him at joeybland@yahoo.com to sign up to help.
Remember the BWS is weather-activated, so we always need to wait and hear whether or not the shelter will be opened on our assigned night. We normally hear either Friday afternoon or Saturday morning whether or not we are a go! Thanks for your patience in helping us help others.

Randy's Ordination
FCC Moderator and friend Randy Vandeventer was ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament!  The worship service took place at the La Canada Congregational Church (UCC) and members, friends and family were in attendance.  After worship our Membership Ministry coordinated a lovely Italian themed supper as a reception - many thanks to all who helped set up and clean up for that important kinship time together.  Our congratulations to Randy and Meagan on this new chapter in their journey with us and in the church!
