| | | Alabama Open Records Desk Update | | |
A free app and website designed to help Alabama newspapers locate public records request links, forms and contact information is expected to be available for access by APA member journalists in September.
The Alabama Open Records Desk was created by The Cullman Tribune as a peer-to-peer tool for members of the Alabama Press Association and other newsrooms working to improve access to public information across the state. Public records processes are often scattered, outdated, difficult to locate or different from one agency to the next.
The app and website will be free to use. The framework is being built at no cost to users, with the understanding that the project will grow through participation from newspapers across the state. Users who download and use the app will also be asked to help submit missing links, broken links, updated forms, new contact information and public records documents that may be useful to other newsrooms.
The Alabama Open Records Desk is expected to include links and information for open records requests involving state and local agencies, county and municipal governments, school systems, law enforcement offices, courts where applicable, boards, commissions and elected offices.
Once launched, a link to access will be distributed through the APA email network.
Noah Galilee is the publisher of The Cullman Tribune. He can be emailed at noah@cullmantribune.com

ANAS represented Alabama newspapers at Alabama Auctioneer's Association conference
Advertising Manager Leigh Leigh Tortorici represented APA newspapers with a booth at the Alabama Auctioneer’s Association conference in August. With approximately 75 auctioneers from Alabama and a few from other Southeastern states attending, she was able to meet and promote the newspapers and APA’s advertising services offered by our partnership with member newspapers, including digital advertising on newspaper websites, newsletters, and affiliated magazines.
She was able to reconnect with some previous advertisers who are excited to reengage with the power of our Newspaper Network, and meet some new faces who need assistance with marketing outreach as they expand their service areas.

The Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media at UNC-Chapel Hill is conducting research on how business professionals in local media are adopting and using AI across their work, especially hoping to hear from publishers, advertising and revenue professionals, development and fundraising staff, audience and product leaders, operations teams, and others involved in the sustainability of local news organizations.
This research will help us better understand how AI is showing up in local media business practices, where organizations see opportunities or concerns, and what kinds of support, guidance, or resources would be most useful to the field.
The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete, all responses are anonymous and will be reported only in aggregate. Participants also have the option to enter for a chance to win a $25 gift card.
