Help Needed from Sophomore and Junior Parents/Caregivers!

Help plan a fun and safe Grad Night for the Class of 2026! Planning Grad Night is a “pay it forward” volunteer opportunity that relies primarily on sophomore and junior parents.

The Grad Night planning committee needs 3-4 more parents! A professional event planning company does most of the work but GHS Parents are needed to ensure a fun and safe all-night party for our grads.

The Class of 2026 Grad Night will take place on Tuesday June 16 in the evening, after the graduation ceremony. Grad Night co-chairs Kathleen Judd and Karin Zaugg-Black are looking for volunteers for the following planning committee roles:

* Recruiting and coordination of chaperones for the event (20 chaperones needed)

* Event promotion

* Registration support

* Purchasing items for the event.

Parents from ALL classes are encouraged to join the Grad Night planning committee. Email us at gradnight@garfieldptsa.org to volunteer or ask questions.

Reclaiming the Village:

4th Meeting Feb 14

On February 14th from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm in the Garfield High School Commons, there will be the 4th installment of the Reclaiming the Village series. This powerful and important series addresses the needs of Black students at Garfield. Black students and their families, community experts and providers, mental health specialists, SPS District employees, and Garfield Alumni have all been engaging in open and honest dialogues about academics, educational disparities, gentrification, mental health, safety, and many other important topics in the previous series.

In the next meeting, we are hoping to build off the diverse ideas and solutions that were brought to the table, offering tangible solutions and a path moving forward, in order to support the Black students at Garfield. We are inviting all Black families that have students at Garfield, in addition to the village that surrounds them: community members, Garfield alumni, teachers, etc. to support putting these various ideas and visions into action.

RSVP here.

African American History in the Central District

Wednesday, February 4 7:00-8:00 pm

Grace United Methodist Church (Lower Hall)

722 30th Ave. South Seattle

Through storytelling, archival materials and neighborhood history, Stephanie Johnson-Toliver makes the history of the Central District come alive. Johnson-Toliver is President of the Black Heritage Society of Washington State and a long time advocate for preserving Black history in the Pacific Northwest. She will discuss how the CD's legacy as a hub for Black culture and a vibrant neighborhood for other minority communities can inform more equitable community development. This event offers historical context for understanding today's conversations around housing and economic development.

This event is free and open to the public. Students are especially welcome.

Research Participants Needed for Seattle Children's Study

Researchers at Seattle Children's Hospital are conducting a study to develop a new measure of organization, time management, and planning skills in middle and high school students. We are looking for students in grades 6-12 who are interested in completing a brief (10-15 minute) questionnaire about their organization, time management, and planning skills as a part of research. One caregiver and one teacher of the student will also be asked to fill out the questionnaire on the student. Each individual (student, teacher, and caregiver) who completes the questionnaire will receive $35 as compensation for the time spent completing study activities.

For more information about the study and for caregivers to express interest, complete the inquiry form here: https://redcap.link/SPOTS.
