The Utah Supreme Court has approved a new Alternate Pathway to Attorney Licensure, administered by the Utah State Bar. This skills-based option, available beginning January 1, 2026, complements the bar exam and provides law graduates with a practice-ready route to licensure.
Program requirements include:
- 240 hours of supervised legal practice under a qualified attorney,
- Completion of required law school skills coursework,
- A written performance exam administered by the Utah State Bar.
This pathway is designed to:
- Better reflect real-world lawyering skills,
- Reduce financial barriers to licensure,
- Maintain rigorous standards of attorney competence.
The program was developed by the Bar Admissions Working Group, a 15-member body of judges, practitioners, and academics. It does not replace the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) or the NextGen Bar Exam (to be administered in Utah starting July 2028), but instead offers candidates a choice aligned with their skills, learning style, and financial circumstances.
Utah joins a growing national movement to modernize attorney licensing and ensure new lawyers are well-prepared to serve clients effectively from the start of their careers.
