October 2026 President Message - Tyler Young

Investiture Ceremonies

Justice Jorgensen & Justice Alito

Justice Dent

The Utah Supreme Court formally welcomed Justices Stephen P. Dent and Jay T. Jorgensen during investiture ceremonies at the Scott M. Matheson Courthouse in September.

Justice Dent’s Sept. 10 ceremony included remarks from Associate Chief Justice Jill M. Pohlman, who administered the ceremonial oath, as well as Judge Scott M. Matheson, Jr. and Judge Robert J. Shelby, both of whom Dent previously served as a law clerk.

Justice Jorgensen’s investiture brought together members of the state and federal judiciary, government leaders, colleagues, friends and family. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., for whom Jorgensen clerked more than 30 years ago, administered the oath of office.

Gov. Spencer J. Cox appointed both justices to the Utah Supreme Court following the creation of additional seats on the Court during the 2026 legislative session. Both began serving on the Court in June.

Thank You, Nick Stiles

The Utah State Bar is grateful to Nick Stiles for his years of service, support and partnership with the Bar and for the collaborative relationship he has helped maintain between the judiciary and the legal community. Following the Salt Lake City Council’s affirmation of Mayor Erin Mendenhall’s nomination of Nick to the Salt Lake City Justice Court, the Bar recognizes his longstanding contributions.

Public Comment Invited on Magistrate Judge

The U.S. District Court for the District of Utah is seeking public comment on the potential reappointment of U.S. Magistrate Judge Cecilia M. Romero, whose current term expires June 6, 2027.

The Court has appointed a Merit Selection Panel to consider Judge Romero’s reappointment to another eight-year term. Magistrate judges handle a range of criminal and civil matters, including preliminary criminal proceedings, misdemeanor cases, pretrial and evidentiary matters, settlement conferences, and certain civil trials.

Members of the bar and the public are invited to submit comments regarding Judge Romero’s reappointment. All comments will remain confidential and will be reviewed only by the Merit Selection Panel and district judges.

Comments must be received by November 6, 2027.
