Judicial Vacancies

Applications are being accepted for a justice court judge position that will serve San Juan County, Utah. The successful candidate will replace Judge Lyon Hazleton who will retire at the end of the year.



To be considered for a justice court judgeship in San Juan County, candidates must be at least 25 years of age, a citizen of the United States, a Utah resident for at least three years, and have a degree from a law school that would make one eligible to apply for admission to a bar in any state in the United States.

Applications are now being accepted for a district court position on the Third District Court. (Counties include Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties).


This position results from the retirement of Judge Mark Kouris, Feb. 1, 2026. Applications must be submitted online by Monday, September 8, 2025.

Utah Judicial Council Call for Applications

The Utah Judicial Council seeks applicants for the Model Utah Civil Jury Instructions Standing Committee.


Current vacancy: One attorney who primarily represents defendants.


The Committee includes plaintiff and defense attorneys, district court judges, and a linguistics expert. Its role is to draft clear, accurate jury instructions reflecting Utah law, using plain language where possible. Members work in subgroups by topic and meet monthly (second Monday, 4:00 p.m.). Terms are three years, with the possibility of one reappointment (maximum two terms).
