Welcome, Utah's Newest Attorneys

Join us in welcoming 333 new attorneys and 4 new Licensed Paralegal Practitioners to the Utah State Bar. There were 241 new lawyers and 2 LPPs in attendance at an official Admission Ceremony at the Salt Palace Convention Center on Thurs., October 3rd. Read the blog for details by clicking here.

What's New at the Bar?

Register Early for Fall Forum - Nov. 14 & 15

Join us for a two-day conference at Little America Hotel where the agenda includes:


  • Keynote dialogue with presiding district court judges
  • CLE on well-being and communication skills
  • Ethics and professionalism/civility MCLE hours
  • Updates from the legislature, judiciary, and on practice tips from our Sections
  • Breakout sessions including the Litigation Section Trial Academy, the Innovation in Law Committee, Utah Center for Legal Inclusion (UCLI), and other community organizations/Sections of the Bar.


Pre-registration is recommended, as space is limited. Early bird registration closes on November 1, 2024. Registration includes listed meals.

Volunteer to help Young Lawyers Division


Give back to the brave men and women who risk their lives to keep our community safe. We are seeking volunteer attorneys to assist in providing free will services to the Salt Lake City Fire Department & Police Department.


Volunteers will guide first responders through basic will creation, healthcare directives, living wills, and provide essential estate planning documents.


This one-day event will take place on Saturday, October 19th, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Utah Law & Justice Center, 645 South 200 East, Salt Lake City.

New ABA Delegate - Tiffany D.W. Shimada


The Utah State Board of Bar Commissioners unanimously approved Tiffany D.W. Shimada to represent the Bar on the American Bar Association House of Delegates. She will serve a two-year term. The Bar has one other representative in the House of Delegates, as well as a representative from the Young Lawyers Division. The ABA Members in Utah also have an elected delegate.

Margaret D. Plane was honored by the Utah State Board of Bar Commissioners for her 16 years of service at her last meeting, Sept. 27, 2024. Her service includes:

  • Women Lawyers of Utah Representative
  • ABA Delegate
  • State ABA Members' Delegate
  • Judicial Council Representative

We are grateful for her leadership and selfless acts of service in the legal community.

Justice Court Judge Opening

Justice Court Judge Vacancy Announced for West Jordan


Applications are being accepted for a full-time justice court judge position that will serve West Jordan. The position will replace Judge Ronald Kunz who will retire in January. The deadline is Nov. 1, 2024.

New Appointments

Gov. Spencer J. Cox Appoints Two Judges to Fifth District Court


Gov. Spencer Cox has announced the appointments of Ryan Christiansen and Meb Anderson to serve as judges in the Fifth District Court. Both appointments are subject to approval by the Utah Senate. If approved, they will fill vacancies left by the retirements of Judge Eric A. Ludlow and Judge Ann Marie McIff Allen.


“Both Mr. Christiansen and Mr. Anderson are well qualified to serve the Fifth District,” said Gov. Cox. “I am confident Utahns will benefit from their knowledge, experience and legal expertise.”

Meb Anderson has been serving as the education division director for the Utah Attorney General’s Office representing Southern Utah University and other education entities since 2019.


Ryan Christiansen currently serves as an assistant attorney general with the Child and Family Support Division of the Utah Attorney General’s Office.

Nielsen appointed to Third District Court

Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has appointed John Nielsen to the Third District Court, filling a vacant position created by the Legislature during the 2024 Legislative Session. Judicial appointments are subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate.
