My year as president was quite vanilla. By that I mean that I don’t remember any major events or crisis resolutions. It was just a fun Rotary year. I will share one surprising meeting. Senator Bob Packwood was scheduled to speak. He came in a black suit and tie, as expected. What wasn’t expected was his patent leather shoes with 3 to 4 inch lifts and his face in full pancake makeup. I guess he thought that the television cameras would be abundant. He just looked like a fish out of water to me.

It has been very delightful to have our past presidents running the meetings. Thank you Diane Hoover for the great idea.

Proposing a New Member - Some New Concepts

Historically, when a new member was proposed, that individual was not informed of the proposal until after approval by both the Membership Committee and the Board of Directors. In addition, the proposed member was asked not to attend club meetings during the period when the proposal was published in COGS.

These traditions were not consistent with our newer recruiting practices, as we encourage visitors and openly seek to interest them in joining our club. Additionally, the publication period is a valuable time for members and candidates to become acquainted. For these reasons, the Board eliminated the secrecy and "blackout" period some time ago. It is now our policy to inform prospective members that they are being invited and to welcome them to attend during the publication period. Prospective members must also be advised that membership is not established until they are presented with their badge at a club meeting following completion of the approval and publication process.

PROGRAM

NAMI with James Ramirez

James Ramirez currently resides in lovely Grants Pass, Oregon. He grew up in Barstow, California's beautiful heart of the high desert. James has a bachelor's degree in business and a Masters in Business Administration. He has recently received his Doctorate in Organizational Leadership. He served in the United States Navy's nuclear power program and retired with 35 years of service. Currently he works for a major utility in California in the areas of power generation and corporate leadership.

James has four children: three daughters, one son, and five grandchildren. Over the past 20 years, he has worked closely with three family members with a brain disease. When my his son encountered his first episode and was diagnosed bipolar, he found all of his training, current education, and business acumen could not help him resolve the issues. He then took his first NAMI Family-to-Family class. Shortly thereafter, he joined NAMI as a member.

Today, he feels blessed to have been graciously certified as a NAMI Family-to-Family National Trainer, and a NAMI Family Support Group, Homefront, and Basics State Trainer. NAMI has saved his relationship with his loved ones and his own personal mental health.
