Program

Today we are celebrating Rotary Youth Exchange. Ann Bauer has been in charge of this program for a really long time. It's one of the favorites of our club. We've had some stunning exchange students - both outbound and inbound. Today we will hear from two of them.

Silja Andresen, who goes by Jay, is here from Denmark. Her first family is Cynthia and Tom Harelson-Pentland. After Thanksgiving she will move to the home of Vince and Jean Lucido. Her third family, from Spring break until when she returns home in July will be Jenny and Frank Morin. Jay attends GPHS and is looking forward to sharing her home country with us and she will let us know what it is like in high school in the US so far.

McKinley Meyer spent last year in Japan. She is completing her senior year at GPHS. She is looking forward to sharing her experience as an exchange student in Japan for a year.

A Blast From the Past

Over the years we have hosted many students in the exchange program. We have even sponsored a couple of Peace Fellows. Here are some updates.

Moses Montenegro

I believe we last connected in 2019 when Hyla Lipson introduced us. At the time, I was interested in learning more about the Rotary Peace Fellowship as I prepared to graduate from UO. I’m happy to share my story with you and express my gratitude to Rotary for its impact on my journey.

While my story is long, I’ll provide a shorter version. I explored other opportunities since I wasn’t yet eligible for the Peace Fellowship.

In late 2019, I was accepted into the Peace Corps to serve as a Youth Development Coordinator in Ukraine. I received my visa in March 2020 and was set to depart in August for a two-year stay. However, as you know, the world changed, and my plans were canceled. So, I pivoted and looked for new opportunities.

I decided to take my savings, move to Washington, D.C., and give myself two months to find a job. Fortunately, I landed a position with the Association of Corporate Counsel. After a year in D.C., I returned to Eugene to work in Development at UO, where I stayed for two years.

Last December, I accepted a frontline fundraising position with NYU. I now live in Manhattan and work with alums and parents on their philanthropic priorities in Northern California, the Pacific Northwest, and Westchester County, NY. Since joining NYU, I’ve helped raise over $500K for student scholarships and research. Additionally, as a full-time employee, NYU will cover the cost of my master’s degree, which I plan to pursue next year.

Life has taken many unexpected twists and turns, but my experience as a Rotary Youth Exchange student in high school was pivotal. It reshaped my perspective on the world and influenced my goals for the future.

I am deeply grateful to the Rotary Club of Grants Pass for supporting my high school exchange and for the scholarship I received to study abroad in college.

Nixon Nembaware - Peace Fellow

Our club sponsored Nixon and he graduated from the University in Japan. Here is what his current life looks like.

What perfect timing to talk about that song because I have just released another one to welcome our second son. He is now about 10 days old. Let me paste the link here. Please share it widely so that I also get more views, likes and subscribers on my channel which I am growing slowly.

My wife is a nurse and a part time artist who paints baby portraits. and so when we have a baby I welcome them by song and write a special song, the title of the track is the name of the baby and when the baby is a year old she paints a special portrait of the baby.

I have been well and just finished serving as Club President at RC of Harare which is the oldest in the country and the second oldest in Southern Africa after the RC of Johannesburg. Our club has shrunk in membership over the years but we try to keep it alive and everyone in Zimbabwe and Harare wants to always see it thrive because it is the mother club of all clubs in Zimbabwe.

I am alive and well. I am a consultant supporting non profits through research work. I am also serving as the chairperson of FathersAgainstAbuse which we formed just before Covid. We have nursed the project and finally we have secured funding from the German aid. I am now setting up two other projects focused on Girls Education and another one on mentoring men as fatherhood.

So this is what's been happening on my part.
