Lent Mailing
The Annual Lenten letter was mailed to the congregation in February. It included a Lent offering envelope. You can use that envelope to mail back your Lenten offering, or donate online by clicking here. In Pastor McCoy’s letter, he urged everyone to participate in Lenten Bible Study and Worships – he challenged us to go a step further by bringing others as well! To view the Lenten letter click here. If you have any questions or need assistance contact [email protected].

STATEMENT OF WELCOME AND INCLUSION
We welcome all people to the life of this congregation. We believe that we are all in need of God’s love and grace and that God, through Jesus Christ, intends the church to be a community that incarnates love, grace and justice for all people. Holding true to that belief, we welcome and encourage all persons, including persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities, in every aspect of our Christian life together.

A message from our Pastor

Dear Friends: The following is a reprint of a recent article by Dr. William Schweiker, our Theologian-in-Residence. It appeared in the University of Chicago Divinity School’s newsletter, Sightings. I thought the subject matter of “death” to be pertinent to our own personal consideration as we begin Holy Week and Jesus’ journey to the cross and death on Good Friday. The article is also a possible teaser to a future class that might be offered in the fall. Read more . . .

Lord, help us to be mindful of individual renewal and the need to bring our lives closer to you. We pray for the continued safety and protection of all people during the current world health crisis and for the continued strength of all healthcare workers. You know exactly what is needed to stem the tide of this virus. Please impart knowledge to our researchers and scientists to find a vaccine for this disease. Help us to be patient and kind to one another during this uncertain time. Thank you, God, for sending Jesus to save us and guide our paths directly back to you. This is our prayer in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

FUMC CHURCH SPACE USE
|
|
A message from Rev. Jason Reed
Chair of FUMC Board of Trustees
Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
According to the Book of Discipline, the Board of Trustees serves at the direction of the Church Council, and " is responsible for all property belonging to the congregation."
In that capacity since the inception of Silk Road Rising in 2003, the Board has related to the theatre group in their use of Pierce Hall and the lower level of the church. A formal space sharing agreement was drawn up with a term of three years. That time frame allowed the theatre to have the stability to engage in planning productions that spanned several seasons; or if the congregation determined that it needed to utilize the space for other purposes, planning could be done to reconfigure the area prior to the theatre's departure.
The current three year term was to have expired at the end of this year. However, given the cancellations caused by the pandemic, Silk Road Rising asked the Board of Trustees to extend the space sharing agreement through 2022. On behalf of the congregation we agreed to that extension. Read more . . .

FUMC Return Team Update
The team is evaluating Chicago Covid guidance, Illinois guidance, and CDC guidance to create a plan to re-enter the Chicago Temple. Plans will include a hybrid of call-in, webcalls, livestream, and/or in-person experiences for worship, meetings, and bible studies. We will update the congregation as the plan develops.

Music Update
You won't want to miss a single moment. We have sought, through the varied voices of musical style we are so blessed to speak, through the uniquely distinct sound of a multitude of musical instruments, through images and visual art to evoke deeper thought and meditation, through setting, context, and lighting, and through sharing in the experience together bound by our community of love in Christ, to offer for our Holy Week journey experiences that, combined with the power of hearing spoken word, scripture, prayer, and confession, deepen our faith and understanding of our Christian life seen through the eyes of Jesus. May you in each anthem, hymn, or song, find sounds that resonate with your soul, challenge or soothe your ear, and allow your emotional spirit to be taken to new places. Thank you to everyone in our music ministry for your gifts of time, dedication, care and concern, and for the power of your combined talents rising to the occasion every time you were called upon to do so.
