“Heroism doesn’t always happen in a burst of glory. Sometimes small triumphs and large hearts change the course of history.”- Mary Roach

From our own Brenda Higgins-
There was a new word coming from a distant country. I heard it and just as quickly forgot it. After all, I’m fairly secluded up here in Maine with wide open spaces. My days did not change. That would not last. The word COVID started to show up at Blue Hill Hospital where I work as an SCU (Special Care Unit) nurse. We learned quickly while on the job; what to do, look for, wear and avoid and mostly to remember that these things changed daily. We learned them not just for ourselves but for our patients, families and communities. We learned we may need to quarantine away from our families. Then it hit and then hit harder and we learned you could never be prepared enough. We learned to share information, equipment and hospital rooms. We learned to co-operate. Each day was so different but the hardest one was when the hospital was placed on lockdown. Families locked away from their loved ones not knowing if they would ever see them again. Days turned to months and I discovered the strength of our communities. They showed up with coffee and doughnuts and pizza. They wrote cards and letters of thanks, they found many ways to show us we were appreciated. We learned we need each other more than we knew. Let’s hope we remember that. God bless.

From Bill Gould
My cousin William Campbell was a recipient of the Bronze Star for Valor killed in action Vietnam. He was a door gunner on a Huey and was shot down and killed the day after Christmas in 1969. One of the most meaningful moments of my life was seeing Billy’s name on the wall the first time.

And, please remember Bill's fraternity brother, Captain Steve Carlin who was killed in action in Vietnam.
Bob Publicover in USAF 68-72 was stationed at Keesler AFB Mississippi, Sondrestrom AB Greenland and Webb AFB Big Spring, Texas.

(probably not working on St. Francis' website)
From Aletha Langham-
This is my son-in-law Army Lt Col Eric Partridge and wife Quenby. He has deployed four times in service to his country in Iraq, Afghanistan and South Korea. Eric is currently serving in Washington DC.
Thank you for your prayers.
John Haley, former parishioner and active choir member, is seen here with his son, Robert. John lives in the San Diego area. He has two grandsons who are on active duty. They are listed regularly on St. Francis' Prayer list.
Thank you, John!

(From our prayer list, Kyle Cariño Mings is the nephew of Becky and Steve Marek.
Kyle is a C-17 pilot in the U.S. Air Force.
2020, being an election year, Kyle flew numerous support missions including the Presidential motorcade (carrying “the Beast”) and Marine One, and flew missions elsewhere around the world as well.
A personal note from Kyle: “Please share my gratitude with your church family. A lot of our military brothers and sisters are still serving overseas, away from their families, and in harms way. Thank you for remembering them and keeping them in your prayers!”

Thank you, Connie Hegarty, for a terrific video that speaks so wonderfully of Memorial Day!
Connie says it is a little longer than usual (6 minutes) but worth watching. It surely is!
From a message to the church by Tyler Knowles

Today (5/21/21), I received an email from the Executive Director, John Lent, of the American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem thanking donors for what has been contributed during the past eleven days of fighting in Gaza and in Jerusalem. He writes that more than 230 Palestinians in Gaza are dead, 65 of these are children. More than 2,000 Gazans are injured. In Israel, he writes, 12 are dead and hundreds more are injured from missile attacks.

The director of Ahli Hospital, Suhaila Tarazi, reports that the destruction in Gaza seems worse even than in 2014. He says 'Gaza is disappearing. The destruction is unimaginable.'

Almost 200 residential buildings have been destroyed and over 70,000 Gazans have lost their homes.

from Tyler-

You can see why the purchase of each bottle of olive oil helps a little bit. If you want to do more, let me know and I will make sure it gets to the hospital. All that is given goes 100% directly to Ahli Hospital.

If you would like to buy a bottle of delicious olive oil (from Canaan, Palestine), let me know by email:

(, or by text or a call to my cell phone (617-852-5765).
