Connect to God
This Sunday, June 9, is the great feast of Pentecost. On this festival day, fifty days after the Resurrection, people of all nations were gathered in Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit descended on them. Today, the Christian feast of Pentecost celebrates the gift of God’s Spirit to all people of all languages and cultures. Pentecost also celebrates the birth of the Church, which came into being through the work of the Spirit that day in Jerusalem.

It’s a day when we celebrate the creative, disruptive, comforting, surprising Spirit of God. We celebrate by wearing red , signifying the burning of the Holy Spirit, which appears in the Pentecost story as tongues of flame dancing over the heads of the disciples. We also celebrate the birth of the church and the ongoing presence of the Spirit with with a parish BBQ, complete with hot dogs, hamburgers, and veggie options, snow cones served by the youth, a bouncy house, and even water balloons (for willing participants only).

The 17th century poet George Herbert celebrated the Holy Spirit in one of my favorite poems. We hope you will join him and us in celebrating.

The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.
And for all this, nature is never spent;
There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs —
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.
