The Laborers in the Vineyard
"Not Fair!" In her August column for  Living Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton reflects on Jesus’ parable about the laborers in the vineyard. While the story raises questions of fairness, she reminds us that “grace is not something we deserve or earn or can work for.” Read her column online in English or  Spanish or download in Word/ PDF
Human Rights Social Message - We Want to Hear From You!

The draft of a social message on human rights is now available for comments at ELCA.org.

Social messages provide a framework for conversation and guidance for ministries in the church about pressing matters of social concern. Human rights touch many aspects of church and society – the social message draft endeavors to help us think through a Lutheran understanding of what human rights are, how we can use them to best care for our neighbor, and where our church stands on relevant issues.
There are two ways to respond: You can fill out the  online response form or email comments to  Eva.Johnson@elca.orgPlease send all comments by Aug. 31.
At the end of the comment period, the draft will be revised and finalized as a proposed message, which will be reviewed by members of the Conference of Bishops and will come before the Church Council for consideration at its November meeting.
We hope that you will take part in this process and share this information with anyone else who may be interested in participating in the discernment across our church that leads to the final message.

Celebrate Global Church Sunday!
This October, as we observe the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, join us for  Global Church Sunday by celebrating and supporting our church’s missionaries! No matter who they are or where they serve, every missionary needs your prayers, support and gifts to live out their ministry.

Each year, more than 225 ELCA missionaries, including Young Adults in Global Mission, serve in more than 40 countries around the world. They are sent by the ELCA in response to invitations from our companion churches and serve in a variety of roles, working alongside our companions to proclaim the gospel, raise up leaders, care for those in need and develop new ways of being church together.

If each of the ELCA’s 9,300 congregations made a gift of $500 or more to  Missionaries and Young Adults in Global Mission in commemoration of the 500th anniversary, we could raise nearly $5 million for these life-changing ministries. This is a historic milestone for the Lutheran church and an exciting opportunity to participate in the ongoing Reformation. Will you join us?

Your congregation received a packet with a Global Church Sunday booklet and other materials earlier this month. View the  Global Church Sunday booklet,  poster and  bulletin insert to get started today!
Stand Together
Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service Webinar
August 14, 2017  11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. MDT
Join LIRS as we convene national and local leaders from across the country to  Stand Together in Support of Refugees. Never has our mission been more urgent – which is why we are calling you to action and asking you to  join this brief training webinar on  Monday, August 14, 2017 to learn what you can do to stand together with refugees. This will be a time to join our voices with others in our communities to protect and advocate on behalf of refugees and learn what we can do to fight for and support the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.

This webinar will empower us to stand together as a community of faithful people, reflect on the most current policies and initiatives impacting refugees and migrants in our country and around the world, listen to the voice of leaders in the field and motivate us to take action during the August 2017 summer recess of government leaders while in their home districts.

Following the webinar, we are asking that you unite together with others in your community and meet with legislators, call elected leaders, and vocalize our support for the United States’ continued leadership in protecting refugees and those in need of protection during the week of August 28th through September 1st.

Prayer of the Day
O God our defender, storms rage around and within us and cause us to be afraid. Rescue your people from despair, deliver your sons and daughters from fear, and preserve us in the faith of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Global Church Prayer
God, who comes to us over the waters and quells the storms of our fears, send your Spirit to renew our faith that you provide what we need. Thanks be to you for all congregations and people who provide support for the work of the ELCA’s global ministries. Executive Skills for Pastors Events
California Lutheran University is offering a week of continuing education with faculty from the School of Management. In the complex environment of congregational management, we all can use new tools for ministry. This continuing education event for pastors will explore how concepts from a MBA program can be applied to the arena of congregational life. Each day, we will explore a different theme.

This event is hosted in two different locations at two different times of the year.

  • January 8-12, 2018 at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center, Carefree, AZ. Details (information, pricing, and registration) available here.

  • July 16-20, 2018 at  the Cal Lutheran Campus in Thousand Oaks, CA. Details here, and below.

Level 1 and Level 2 run at the same time. This is due to our desire to create synergies between the participants as they join together in housing, meals and breaks while participating in different classes. Level 1 is the prerequisite to Level 2.

(Class content is subject to change.)
Level One:
Finance; Marketing; Leadership; Information Technology; Entrepreneurship; Strategic Questions
Level Two:
The Customer Experience; Organizational Development; Advanced Leadership Skills; Vision and Mission.

This dynamic continuing education event is limited to 20 registrants for each level. Participants will be invited to bring a particular project or issue that they will focus on during the week. Through lectures, group work, and one-on-one learning participants will gain valuable and needed skills for their work as pastors in congregational settings. The participants will live, learn, worship, and work together throughout the week.

Cost (subject to slight change): $799.00 (includes classes, materials, room and board)
Cost Commuter fee: $625.00 (includes classes, materials, snacks and lunches) Will include dinner if evening sessions are scheduled.
Time: The event will begin on Monday and concludes at noon on Friday.
Travel: For those who are traveling, housing may be arranged for the nights of Sunday, and Friday. Cost is $20 per night and can be reserved through registration.

 Living Lutheran's Children-in-Worship Series:
Everyone Can Serve

The purpose of including and encouraging children in church-as well as their parents-is not to "improve our numbers." It's to get the gospel into the marrow of their bones and to infect them with grace, love and a commitment to peace. We do...

Anti-Bullying Curriculum
Reconciling Work's " Where All Can Safely Live" is an anti-bullying curriculum that gives an introduction to what bullying is, how it functions, and why we as Christians are called to prevent it from happening in our communities.
The curriculum is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to stop bullying. However, this guide provides a basic understanding of how bullying works and offers suggestions for steps in creating a congregational bullying prevention plan.  Read more
