"SALT AND LIGHT," A STORY BEING WRITTEN

As we prepare to launch our FY2027 Stewardship Campaign, "Salt and Light," this story reminds us why St. Paul's matters — and how God’s love shines through a community willing to show up for one another.

Not many people know this, but 17 years ago — fresh out of college — a new resident of Indianapolis called up the Diocesan office because her godmother told her to “just call and ask which parish meets your ‘wants and needs.’” After being put on hold, a very nice woman answered the phone and introduced herself to me as “Cate.” I explained that I was looking for a new church, one that would wholeheartedly welcome a young adult, liturgically considered a “high church,” and that had a superb music program, beautiful buildings, and a commitment to social justice. She listened to me, and asked a few questions, and then chuckled and told me — she had probably picked up the wrong line, but — she was the Bishop and she thought I should visit St. Paul’s on Meridian.

As one does at 22 years of age, I think I transferred my membership that day on the phone with Marilyn Vargo (then Assistant to the Rector) — sight unseen. I sometimes sit with that and wonder at the way God nudges you in the right direction in the most profound and influential ways. I don’t have any family in Indiana; when I started at St. Paul’s I knew relatively no one here. That young lady found a sense of home, belonging, and family that has only enriched my life over these past years. I think God knew where I needed to be, where I would find solace from grief, a balm to loneliness, and a home well before I really had one of my own. I never really had a profound realization that I “belonged” here, I always just felt that I belonged to St. Paul’s as much as it belonged to me.

Now this place, that has always been home, has hosted me in times of grief, joy, love, new beginnings, and even new life. I often joke that I could fill a whole gallery wall of my life on the steps of its altar. From my first days in choir, to my marriage, the baptisms of my three children, Christmas pageants, welcomes, goodbyes — and the everyday moments in between — St. Paul’s is so intertwined in me that it feels like an extension of the home and family I have created. I count myself exceedingly blessed to have found my home here.

THIS WEEKEND

"SALT AND LIGHT" STEWARDSHIP FY2027 LAUNCH

Sunday, March 8, 10:15-11 a.m., Parish Hall

We’ll gather between the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services — children, youth, parents, grandparents, longtime members and brand-new faces — to begin something important together. We’re launching our FY2027 stewardship season, “Salt and Light.” This year’s theme invites us to pause and notice how our shared generosity protects what's sacred in our life together — and how it carries Christ’s light beyond our walls into the wider community. Stewardship isn’t just about sustaining a budget. It’s about shaping the kind of church we're becoming together. Come enjoy coffee, pastries and snacks, and time to reconnect. We're excited to begin this season with you!

STREETS TO HOME MOVE-IN KITS

You're invited to help create 10 move-in kits for new residents of Streets to Home Indy. Many arrive at their new apartments with just a few personal belongings. A few simple essentials — towels, sheets, dishes, or pans — can turn an empty space into a home filled with comfort and dignity. A sample kit is on display in Burrows Commons, where you can sign up to provide a single item, furnish a whole room, or even sponsor an entire kit. Click the button below to see the full list of items needed and join us in welcoming our neighbors home.

ST. PAUL'S CHOIR SHINES

St. Paul’s Choir, joined by talented local professional orchestral musicians, lifted hearts and filled the pews in our sanctuary last Sunday for Mozart's "Requiem" concert. It was an evening of profound beauty and sacred music. Bravo to all the singers and instrumentalists for creating such an unforgettable experience, and thank you to everyone who joined us in support! Special kudos also to Director of Music, Brad Hughley, for leading a truly marvelous performance.
