Complete and Accurate Power Sector Data

eGRID with 2021 data is here

A new version of the Emissions and Generation Resource Integrated Database (eGRID) is now available with 2021 data.

eGRID provides generation, emissions, and operational data for practically every electric generating unit in the United States. Using a bottom-up approach, the unit-level data is used to calculate emission rates and resource mixes (i.e., amount of generation by fuel type) for various levels of aggregation including state, eGRID subregion, and national levels.

This data is most often used for the estimation of indirect emissions from electricity purchases, like in the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance. eGRID is also used in various emission calculation tools and applications and is cited in hundreds of academic papers every year.

What's new?

eGRID now includes demographic and socioeconomic data using EPA’s environmental mapping and screening tool (EJSCREEN). The demographic and socioeconomic percentages and percentiles, including data for low-income and people of color, are provided for communities within three miles of each power plant.

This information was first presented along with eGRID data in the Power Plants and Neighboring Communities webpage through interactive graphs and maps. You can find this information on the “DEMO” sheet of the eGRID2021 Data file.

The latest PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in size) data is also being released. The 2019 and 2020 data can be found here.

How can we help?

We know the eGRID spreadsheet is not for everybody. Did you know that you can find the data in a variety of ways on the eGRID website? Maybe you just need the eGRID subregion emissions rates, in that case, check out the summary tables.

Or maybe you want to know the appropriate rate to use for a specific location, type your zip code into Power Profiler. Looking to explore the data? Use the Data Explorer to see the information presented through interactive maps and graphs.

Or maybe you would like to make your own maps, use these mapping files. And, of course, there will always be the good old spreadsheet.

Data Spotlight

EPA’s Power Sector Emissions Data, one of eGRID's primary data sources, has a new query tool, the Clean Air Markets Program Data (CAMPD) web application.

Use it to access over 20 years of hourly monitored power plant emissions, operating, compliance, and facility/unit attributes data for power plants reporting under EPA’s federal emissions trading programs (generally larger fossil fuel-fired plants).
