SONGS OF ADVENT

We're all familiar with the Christmas songs or carols, but not many of us know that there are four songs recorded in the Bible to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The angels sang a song to the shepherds (the Gloria ). Mary sang a song to God after she had had time to get over the shocking news that she was going to be the mother of the Savior (Song of Mary or the Magnificat ). Simeon also had a song ( nunc dimittis ). Then there's Zechariah's song ( Benedictus Dominus Deus ). Zechariah was an elderly priest who sang after being visited by an angel. The ancient Church captured these words of poetry and created canticles.

This Sunday, the Second Sunday of Advent, we will consider another of the “songs,” the Song of the Angels or the Gloria in Excelsis Deo (Luke 2:13-14). You are encouraged to read the "song" in your Book of Common Prayer or in the Bible in preparation.
Advent Pilgrimage
4:00 p.m., Sunday, December 9, 2018
Plan now to join our annual Advent Pilgrimage to
Galveston’s Historic Downtown Churches

1) First Lutheran Church - 25th and Winnie
2) First Baptist Church - 23rd and Sealy
3) Trinity Episcopal Church - 22nd and Winnie
4) St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral Basilica - 21st and Church
5) First Presbyterian Church - 19th and Church

Bring your friends and family to follow the Advent cross in a procession stopping at each of the historic downtown churches to hear an Advent reading and sing two carols before walking together to the next church.
At the conclusion of the pilgrimage, all participants are invited to a fellowship reception hosted by First Presbyterian Church.
A van will be available for those in need of assistance between churches.
As we remember Pearl Harbor today, we salute those who have given to our country – veterans, current service personnel, first responders and all who make our communities better places in which to live. This Sunday The Grand will present a show that touches on the true story from another war –  All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 , when Allied forces and German troops laid down their arms for one day to celebrate Christmas and come together as members of the human community.

All Is Calm
The Christmas Truce of 1914
Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018  4:00 PM
This heartrending retelling of a powerful historic event recounts the astounding moment during World War I when Allied forces and German soldiers laid down their arms to celebrate Christmas Day 1914 together − sharing food and drink, singing carols, and playing soccer. All is Calm weaves first-hand accounts by World War I soldiers with patriotic tunes, trench songs, and Christmas carols.”

TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT……
VESTRY AND DIOCESAN COUNCIL DELEGATES NOMINATIONS

The Nominating Committee of our vestry will begin meeting later this fall to put together slates of candidates for vestry and diocesan council delegates/alternates. Please consider whether you are called to serve in one of these roles. Or perhaps you would like to suggest a fellow parishioner who would be great! Vestry terms are three years and new members will be elected at the Annual Parish meeting in January. The vestry meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. for about 1 ½ hours.
If you desire to nominate someone, please send their information to Senior Warden, John Speich at speich@sbcglobal.net . Also feel free to talk to Dan Freeman, Jerry Jackson, Carolyn Clyburn and Susan Duif – or any vestry member.

This year a new Bishop Suffragan for the West Region (Austin area) will be elected at Council and there will be a Bishop Candidate Walk-About at Camp Allen on January 5.
The 2019 Diocesan Council is scheduled for Feb. 21-23 at The Woodlands

PARKING LOT USE

Trinity is privileged to be permitted use of the  fenced parking lot across the street for weekly services and, with approval, for our special events. However, by owner’s terms, cars must leave the lot soon after services, lunches, weddings and funerals or risk being locked in behind the fence. We  certainly encourage use of the parking lot, but caution those planning lunch or other offsite  activities to please park elsewhere after church sponsored events. Thank you for helping us to  be good neighbors with the new owners.
