For All Seasons’ “Give With Your Heart” Campaign Shares Mental Health Stories

For All Seasons’ “Give With Your Heart Campaign” is raising funds to continue its critical work to meet the increased mental health needs of the Eastern Shore with accessible mental health and rape crisis services. This virtual campaign, which will run from April 7 through April 11, underscores the importance of mental health and community connection. During the campaign, the agency is sharing meaningful stories through video interviews shared by For All Seasons’ staff about real-life client stories. Segments from these client stories are included below.

Meet 13-year-old Ashley: Last year a really bad thing happened to me that changed everything. I was raped by a man that was a friend of my family. At the time, I was outside playing and hanging around in a place that had always been fun for me. Right after it happened, I couldn’t tell my mom for days because I was hurt. I was ashamed, and afraid people would not believe me or that the kids at school might even know and make fun of me.

YMCA Partners with the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading in Cambridge

IMG_5239-scaled image

The racquetball courts have been gutted, as has the band/choir room. This section of the Pauline F. and W. David Robbins Family YMCA in Cambridge will be transformed into a reading hub for young children, thanks to $300,000 in funding provided by novelist-philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. It’s necessary to renovate this area for the new use because there is nowhere else in the facility for it. And what’s a reading campaign without reading space?

The Robbins Y has recently partnered with the Dorchester County Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, which focuses on ensuring that children from low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career, and active citizenship. Reading proficiency by the end of third grade is a critical milestone in a child’s educational development, serving as a key predictor of future academic success and high school graduation.

Sadly, Dorchester County currently ranks 21st of 24 counties in third-grade reading proficiency in Maryland, and recent assessments have highlighted the need for focused intervention. Through this new partnership, the Robbins Y aims to address these challenges by implementing the elements of the CGLR: targeted kindergarten readiness strategies, decreasing chronic absenteeism, enhancing and expanding literacy programs, engaging families, mobilizing community resources to support young readers, and increasing access to out-of-school time activities. The goal is to increase the number of Dorchester County third graders reading at grade level from 21% to 50% in the next eight years.

Cambridge Time Machine: Getting a prescription at Craig’s

Craig’s Drug Store was founded at 521 Poplar Street by Charles P. Craig in 1867. In the early 1900s, the store took on Charles “Pop” Kelly, who delivered prescriptions until World War II. After his military service, he went to pharmacy school and began his career as a pharmacist at Craig’s in 1949. He and partner Clarendon Gould bought the business in 1957. Pop’s son, Chuck, graduated from pharmacy school in 1972 and went to work at Craig’s. Chuck became sole owner of the store in 1987. It is now located on Race Street.

Main Street Gallery's Spring show features Carla Huber

Main Street Gallery is delighted to be exhibiting a show of guest artist Carla Huber’s oil paintings and recent monoprints this spring in a show titled "2 Ways About It". Carla, a well known and award winning plein air painter who lives and maintains a studio in Woolford, has created a series of hand pulled monoprints that were inspired by and correspond to several of her oil paintings.

The gallery will pair the monoprints and the oil paintings, hanging them side by side so as to give the viewer a unique insight into how she interpreted her subject in two different ways using two different media.

Carla claims that her love of the outdoors and the Eastern Shore have strongly influenced her plein air artwork. This is readily apparent in the pieces in this show. “The outdoors is my studio” she says, and the flora and fauna along with sailboats, the seashore and other Eastern Shore scenes populate these works and have been her subjects for the last twenty years. During that time, Carla has participated in the popular Plein Air show in Easton and has shown her work in several Eastern Shore galleries.

But Carla’s journey as an artist began well before she moved to the Eastern shore. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute in New York City and studied at the NY School of Visual Arts. After finishing school she moved to the Washington DC area where she worked as a fashion illustrator for several department stores.

Book Drive

The Dorchester County Public Library kicked off Black History Month with a community Book Drive for 5 partner organizations: The Cambridge Boys & Girls Club, New Beginnings Community Center, Harvesting Hope Youth & Family Wellness (Reading Socials), the Cambridge Empowerment Center, and the Pauline F. & W. David Robbins Family YMCA. This drive is part of a statewide initiative with the Maryland Commission on African American History: https://africanamerican.maryland.gov/ and aligns with our goals to get more books out into the communities facing barriers to access.

New/like new/gently used titles can be donated to either library branch from now until April 26th. The Library will then divvy up and present the donated books to our community partners to house within their organizations for their after-school programs or to distribute to the children and families they serve.

Donated titles must feature Black characters, culture, and experiences, and can be fiction or non fiction, for ages 3+. Recommended titles/authors can be selected from our Amazon Wishlist (https://a.co/265R3kL) and will ship directly to the Cambridge Library.

Help us reach our goal of 250 books by sharing this information or possibly donating a book to the Drive!
