Richardson Maritime Museum Sees Bright Future |
The exhibits of the Richardson Maritime Museum sit crowded in the top floor of the red brick building on Byrn Street in Cambridge. They await their moment to once more face the admiring public as they did at the old Dorchester National Bank Building on High Street. And that moment may be closer than some people think.
“My goal is to have it before the end of 2025, to have us at least open one day a week with volunteer docents to do that,” said Debbie Usab, executive director of the Richardson. “We have a docent manual, but it’s not appropriate to this exhibit. So, to refurbish the docent manual, I have a history intern who is going to be graduating, and this is their internship, and they’re going to be working on that docent manual.”
A new manual is necessary because the museum will be considerably altered from its earlier form. Not only will the main space be different, but there is also the Boat Works next door, which the staff calls “the living museum” because vintage vessels are worked on there. That’s a component the founders of the endeavor probably didn’t envision when they started.

Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Unveils Renovated Meeting and Event Spaces |
Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina, an award-winning waterfront destination nestled on 342 acres of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, announces the completion of an extensive renovation to its meeting and event spaces. This latest enhancement finalizes a comprehensive upgrade to all on-site meeting venues, following the transformation of the resort’s ballrooms in 2023.
“Our newly renovated meeting and event spaces are designed to further elevate the resort experiences for groups, offering a seamless blend of modern elegance and coastal inspiration,” said Cari Ruppert, Director of Sales, Marketing and Events at Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay. “With this final phase of meeting space updates, we are thrilled to provide a fully refreshed setting that fosters collaboration, creativity, and unforgettable gatherings.”
Completed in March, the latest renovation phase includes a rehaul of the resort’s small and mid-sized meeting spaces and corridors. The renovation introduces a fresh color palette of neutral gray and blue tones, creating a bright, calming, and inviting atmosphere reflective of the resort’s scenic waterfront location. Plush blue carpeting with intricate gold-accented wave patterns, the installation of elegant lighting fixtures and modern wall sconces, and updated gray and light beige wall coverings add to the contemporary look.

For All Seasons Open House Celebrates New Chestertown Location | |
For All Seasons recently held an open house for its new location at 315 High Street, Suite 202 in Chestertown. Staff provided information on expanded services and tours of the new downtown space. The new location ties into the agency’s ‘Bringing Mental Health to Main Street’ initiative, bringing services to main streets across the Mid-Shore and making services walkable for people living in the Shore’s towns and cities. Beginning March 24, the agency also began offering its Open Access™ program – a walk-in mental health service with same-day access to appointments – something new in Kent County. The hours in Chestertown for Open Access are Mondays from 2 to 3 p.m.
“We have been serving Kent County for 25 years and Kent County Public Schools with school-based programs for the past 16 years. Tonight, we stand in this new “home” for our Kent County services, but make no mistake… we have been here, walking alongside this community for decades. And, the really exciting thing is, with this new space, we will be able to do even more,” stated Beth Anne Dorman, President & CEO of For All Seasons.

YMCA of the Chesapeake Highlights Parkinson's Awareness Month Across the Shore |
This April, the YMCA of the Chesapeake is proud to recognize Parkinson’s Awareness Month by hosting special events and offering vital programs for those affected by Parkinson’s disease. In honor of World Parkinson’s Day on April 11th, the community is invited to punch out Parkinson’s through our Fight Back Punch-a-Thon, held at six YMCA locations across the Eastern Shore.
“Join us this April as we raise awareness, build community, and fight back against Parkinson’s—one punch, one pedal, and one step at a time,” said Wendy Palmer, Director of Chronic Disease and Prevention Programs.
As the largest human services organization on the Eastern Shore, serving communities from Cecil County, MD, to Chincoteague Island, VA, and, as of 2024, St. Mary’s County, MD, the Y is deeply committed to providing access to disease prevention and management resources.
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement, causing tremors, stiffness, and balance difficulties. While there is no cure, research shows that exercise plays a critical role in managing symptoms and improving quality of life.

Book Drive
The Dorchester County Public Library kicked off Black History Month with a community Book Drive for 5 partner organizations: The Cambridge Boys & Girls Club, New Beginnings Community Center, Harvesting Hope Youth & Family Wellness (Reading Socials), the Cambridge Empowerment Center, and the Pauline F. & W. David Robbins Family YMCA. This drive is part of a statewide initiative with the Maryland Commission on African American History: https://africanamerican.maryland.gov/ and aligns with our goals to get more books out into the communities facing barriers to access.
New/like new/gently used titles can be donated to either library branch from now until April 26th. The Library will then divvy up and present the donated books to our community partners to house within their organizations for their after-school programs or to distribute to the children and families they serve.
Donated titles must feature Black characters, culture, and experiences, and can be fiction or non fiction, for ages 3+. Recommended titles/authors can be selected from our Amazon Wishlist (https://a.co/265R3kL) and will ship directly to the Cambridge Library.
Help us reach our goal of 250 books by sharing this information or possibly donating a book to the Drive!
Please feel free to email any questions to Julie

Guided Birding Tour at Blackwater NWR
Get outside this winter and spring by participating in a free guided birding tour at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy learning about and identifying the many species of birds that inhabit the refuge. Throughout the winter, waterfowl and raptors, including bald eagles, are plentiful, while spring brings in migratory warblers and shorebirds.
Participants meet at the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 8:00 a.m. for each tour, which may last 3 to 4 hours. The birding party typically tours via personal vehicle, stopping at various points around the refuge’s Wildlife Drive. Binoculars and field guides are recommended. There is no fee or advanced registration for these tours. For further information, please call the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 410-228-2677 or visit our website at www.fws.gov/refuge/Blackwater.
