Dorchester Historical Society Preparing to Close Out 2025

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – One Dorchester County group is getting ready to close out the year with a bang.

The Dorchester County Historical Society is inviting people to the Meredith House in Cambridge for their Seasonal Sips Event.

This will be the historical society’s final event in 2025.

Members say they’re looking forward to closing out the year with a celebration of local history, and are preparing for what lies ahead with Maryland 250 next year.

‘Mr. Bill’ at the Cambridge Library: A Poet Among Us

Mr image

If you’ve ever been to the Dorchester County Public Library, you already know Bill Epps. He’s the imposing yet affable septuagenarian behind the desk who remembers your name, finds the book you couldn’t see, and always has a kind word – an ordinary guy doing an ordinary job.

Except one day a letter arrived that proved he’s not quite so ordinary after all.

Turns out, he’s not just a poet, but a good one. His paean to the celebrated abolitionist Oh Harriet Tubman! (Light Director Extraordinaire), which hangs on the wall behind his desk, won first place in the Maryland division of the 2025 National Veterans Creative Arts Competition in October.

“I was just blown away,” Epps, who everyone calls Mr. Bill, says with a chuckle: “I never thought anything like that would happen to me.”

Epps never set out to be a published writer, but he always loved to read. Growing up on the streets of Philadelphia, he admits he was a poor student and found his way only after joining the U.S. Air Force. After retirement, he moved to Cambridge in January 2006 and later took a volunteer position at the library, which evolved into his current job in 2015.

Surrounded by books, he nurtured his love for reading and was moved by a biography of Tubman, who was born enslaved a few miles down the road, escaped her bondage, and returned to ultimately free hundreds of others. In the great emancipator, he saw inspiration for her modern-day Dorchester descendants.

Cambridge Time Machine: Shopping at the Plaza

Cambridge Marketplace was once known as Cambridge Plaza, a very busy place. It featured Bay Country Bakery, Zepp Photo Center, The Flower House, Safeway, a laundromat, and Ames. Plus there was Price’s music store, Peking House Chinese Restaurant, and The Loft Sub Shop, which was set up like a barn with stalls. And, of course, there was Drug Fair, where one could get novels, magazines, comics, and records. They had a small cafeteria-style eatery where you could wait for your prescriptions to be filled.

One Mission Prepares for 1st Festival of Wreaths

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) -Members of One Mission Cambridge are busy getting Cambridge Wesleyan Church ready with wreaths of all shapes, and sizes as they prepare for their last big fundraiser for the year: Their first Festival of Wreaths.

“We’re so excited to show them off. I wish I could take credit for more. The one of them here, but no, they’re great. We’re very thankful for the people who went out of their way to donate wreaths for the event…” says One Mission Fundraiser, Rebekah Koston.

The wreaths were made by numerous members of the community and will be raffled off on Saturday to benefit One Mission.

One member of Cambridge Wesleyan Church says with what One Mission has been able to do in Cambridge since starting in 2022, an event like this feels like it brings all of the community together.

U.S. Secretary of Education visits Maple Elementary on “History Rocks” tour

69409fd51ae5e image

CAMBRIDGE, Md - U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited Maple Elementary School in Cambridge today as part of the Education Department’s national “History Rocks” tour. McMahon was joined by Congressman Andy Harris and former White House counselor Kellyanne Conway for the fourth stop on the nationwide tour, which will eventually visit schools in all 50 states ahead of next year’s Independence Day.

The event featured remarks from Secretary McMahon, Congressman Harris, and local school officials, along with trivia games and some singing by students. The focus of the visit was highlighting history and emphasizing the critical role local communities play in education.

Congressman Harris praised the leadership at Dorchester County schools.

“We need to get education control down to the local, really local counties as much as we can,” Harris said. “I think that's where the best decisions are made. And I think what was demonstrated today, we have the leadership in Dorchester County to make the right decisions. Let's empower them.”

Secretary McMahon echoed that message.

Vienna Gears up for 44th Annual Luminary

(VIENNA, Md) – A holiday tradition returns to the banks of the Nanticoke River this weekend.

This Saturday, thousands of lights will line the streets of Vienna as the town’s Heritage Society hosts their 44th annual Luminaria.

And one board member says they can’t wait to see the small community light up the Nanticoke.

“We have a lot of old homes. We have a big maritime history. And to be able to highlight this through the holidays, time is really an awesome experience for all of us in town,” says Heritage Society Board Member, Patricia Johnson.

For Anne Hillyer and her husband, who live in the historical home of former Maryland Governor, Thomas Hicks, the Luminaria represents mixing the holiday spirit, and the history of Maryland along this Eastern Shore river.

Hillyer tells WMDT, “They’re opening the church up, and they’re going to do singing and Christmas music, you know, holiday music there. So there are so many things that are happening. This is a really special little event that I think many people don’t know about.”

The Dorchester County Historical Society is also taking part in Vienna’s festivities. As they bring a painting of Governor Hicks back to his one-time home.

Dorchester Chorus Preparing for Annual Christmas Concerts

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – And the members of the Chorus of Dorchester County are getting warmed up to put on a show this weekend.

The Chorus is holding a pair of free concerts Saturday and Sunday to celebrate the holiday season.

They’re expecting big turnouts at both Cambridge churches as they sing a variety of holiday songs.

We caught up with one member of the chorus about getting ready to sing as well as what this concert means to them.

“The chorus has been in existence for 50 years. I’m a newbie. I’ve only been part of this since the spring, but I absolutely adore going each year and singing each year. And, you won’t be disappointed,” says Chorus member, Marianne Maye.

Remembering 40 years of For All Seasons with Beth Anne Dorman and Karen Kaludis

Forty years is a long time for any community institution, and in the world of mental health, it is remarkable. In this Spy interview with For All Seasons CEO Beth Ann Dorman and one of the organization’s founders, Karen Kaludis, we talk about that staying power and how a small, almost improvised idea on the Mid Shore grew into one of the region’s most essential mental health providers. What began in 1986 as a single room with a handful of committed people has become a lifeline for thousands across the Shore and, increasingly, throughout Maryland.

At the heart of this story is Karen and a special group of her friends, who remember clearly why For All Seasons had to exist. As a young deputy state’s attorney prosecuting child sexual abuse cases, she saw families with nowhere to turn. There was no local therapy, no real support system, no place for healing to begin. When co-founder Joy Mitchell-Price and a small group of determined women began asking hard questions about mental health care in rural communities, what followed was not just the creation of an agency, but the shaping of a culture built on trust, collaboration, and a simple conviction that when someone asks for help, the answer should be yes.

Blue Christmas Service

A service of remembrance and hope.

The Christmas season is hard for those whose hearts are hurting.

The designation acknowledges the "Blue" feelings many people experience during the Advent and Chritmas seasons.

For those who have lost a loved one, this is a time of aute lonelieness. For thos who have lost a relationship or a job, experienced failing health or financial setbacks, this is a time of pain, confusion and anxiety. We can still worship with honesty in the confidence that God shares our pain, understands our loss and seeks to be present in the comforting and hopeful ways.

Blue Christmas is a gentle, contemplative service that offers comfort and hope for those carrying pain or loss during this season of celebration.

Don’t miss the opportunity to observe our diverse array of feathered friends, from woodpeckers and wading birds to numerous species of waterfowl and raptors, including the bald eagle. Prior bird knowledge is not required! Expert birders Terry Allen and Ron Ketter will help you identify and learn about the many species of birds that inhabit the refuge.

Participants will meet at the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 8:00 a.m. Tours may last 3 to 4 hours. The birding party typically tours via personal vehicle, stopping at various hotspots around the refuge’s Wildlife Drive. Binoculars and field guides are highly recommended for an enjoyable experience. There is no fee or advanced registration required. For further information, please call the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 410-228-2677 or visit our website at www.fws.gov/refuge/Blackwater.
