Restored ‘Rigby House’ Offers Affordable Rooms and a Second Chance

Durrel-2--2048x1365 image

When local contractor and property developer Durrell Miller bought a long-vacant building on Rigby Avenue at auction, his plan was straightforward: renovate it, rent it, and let the numbers work.

But Cambridge’s zoning rules pushed him in a slightly different direction, ultimately resulting in both a viable business venture and a new tool for Delmarva Community Services (DCS), a local anti-poverty nonprofit, as it works to move people from homelessness into stable housing.

The newly renovated Rigby Community Building, or Rigby House, at 617 Rigby Ave., was recently rededicated as a single-room-occupancy property with 18 private bedrooms, shared baths, and communal spaces divided between two sides of a duplex. Each room rents for $850 per month, including utilities and internet.

Choptank Habitat For Humanity Building Neighborhood in Cambridge

70b06bcfc015a1683f956d8edf637e6070e629eb-1024x576 image

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Choptank Habitat for Humanity and their volunteers are hard at work turning land on Camper Street in Cambridge into a brand new neighborhood, one that’s going to create up to a dozen new home owners.

We got a chance to meet with some of Choptank Habitat’s leadership at the construction site, where four of those twelve homes are under construction.

It’s all part of their home ownership program to help low-income families become buyers.

Habitat Chief Development Officer, Jenny Schmidt walked us through the process.

She says, “People always think that we give these houses away. We do not give them away. The homeowner is going through our program, have to put in 200 hours of sweat equity. They have to save money for closing costs and then they take out a mortgage. This is their house.”

Habitat for Humanity is planning to have all twelve of these houses under construction throughout the year.

For a volunteer like Frank Dorian, being able to lend a hand to families in need of a fresh start is exactly why habitat is building a neighborhood in Cambridge in the first place.

Hurlock purchases trolley with community support

698bd0ff75257 image

HURLOCK, Md. - A new trolley is officially rolling into Hurlock after town leaders approved its purchase, turning a community idea into a town-owned attraction.

The Hurlock Town Council voted 4–1 this week to acquire the trolley, which was purchased from Delmarva Community Transit and paid for entirely through donations from local businesses and neighbors. The trolley, which had been sitting unused at Delmarva Community Transit’s facility in Denton, was sold to the town for $6,000.

Mayor Earl Murphy said the idea came together quickly after a conversation sparked by the town’s Christmas parade.

“The fun thing about the trolley is it was an idea after we had our Christmas parade of why aren't we building something more permanent?” Murphy said. “I noticed one of the local businesses had a trolley. So I reached out to them, which is Delmarva Community Transit, and they happened to have one available.”

Joshua Sparks of Hurlock helped spearhead the fundraising effort after being asked by the mayor to take on the challenge.

Brandywine is a beautiful 4-year-old Boxer with a big heart and an even bigger love for her people. She’s spayed, up to date on all vaccines, and ready to find her forever home through Baywater Animal Rescue.

Personality

This sweet girl thrives on human attention — whether it’s playtime, cuddles, or showing off her favorite toys, Brandywine is happiest when she’s by your side. She’s affectionate, loyal, and full of fun energy that makes every day brighter.

What She’s Looking For

Brandywine would do best as the only dog in the home, as she doesn’t enjoy the company of other dogs. However, she does well with cats and kids, making her a great fit for a family looking for a loving, people-focused companion.

If you’re searching for a devoted best friend who will shower you with love, Brandywine might just be your perfect match.

Crowned in Culture

Join us at Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park with Danielle Johnson, Senior Cosmetologist at Mirror Mirror, for an engaging Black History Month program exploring the history and culture significance of hair and beauty in African and African-American communities. This interactive event features a panel discussion on hair health, styling, hair loss, and current trentds, followed by a live model showcase celebrating heritage, creativity, and modern expression. Come learn, connect, and elebrate the power of Black beauty across generations.

As owner of Mirror Mirror Salon in historic Cambridge, Maryland, Danielle combines technical excellence with a calming, client-focused experience. A U.S. Army veteran, Danielle is passionate about mentorship and empowering women through beauty and education. Her work is proudly featured on "Young Harriet," the 13-foot Harriet Tubman statue located outside the Dorchester County Circuit Court, honoring both heritage and legacy.
