SDFM Presents ''The Transpeninsular Line & Mason and Dixon

2025SDFM-Transpeninsularline-Mason-Dixonline image

The Transpeninsular line story intrigued Mr. Hemcher after hearing a talk at the Brick Church on Taylors Island in 2014 the day of the Battle of the Ice Mound Bicentennial. And then with the development of the James Island project he became interested again due to the fact that the terminus (end) of the Transpeninsular Line ended on Taylors Island at what was in the 1700's James Point. So, after completing research at the Dorchester and Talbot County Libraries he would like to share the information he has found and welcomes audience participation.

George Hemcher is a retired tradesman that has a keen interest in history. Mostly focused on WW2 history he has traveled to Belgium, Luxembourg and France following in his father’s footsteps with the Armored Division.

He had owned property at Robinson Neck Rd on Taylors Island for many years and now lives in South East Pennsylvania.

NHPA to celebrate 20 years and announce projects at annual meeting

Historic preservation group will reveal exciting plans for 2025 and beyond.

The Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance (NHPA) will hold its 2025 annual meeting on February 23rd at 3:00 pm at the Dorchester County Historical Society’s Robbins Center (1003 Greenway Drive, Cambridge, MD). The Dorchester-based nonprofit will recap some of its past accomplishments and announce exciting future plans for the Handsell Historic Site near Vienna.

NHPA has completed a number of ambitious projects over the years, including preservation of the circa 18th Century Handsell House, construction of a Native American longhouse and garden, and installation of a memorial to enslaved African Americans. The group also hosts two annual living history events at Handsell: Chicone Village Day in the Spring and the Nanticoke River Jamboree in the Fall.

NHPA has big plans for 2025 that include purchasing land, constructing a new building (Three Cultures Center), acquiring a cache of period architectural treasures, and implementing an appropriate and sensible landscaping plan. Trustee Midge Ingersoll will give a presentation on NHPA’s past and future projects at the annual meeting, which will also include brief talks about the historical importance of the architectural items and environmental benefits of the landscaping plan. At the meeting, a significant Dorchester County artwork will be gifted to the NHPA board.

Black History Month: The history of Harriet Tubman

Honoring-Harriet-Tubman-image-1024x576 image

DORCHESTER COUNTY, Md. – Harriet Tubman, was an abolitionist and slave who worked relentlessly to free enslaved African Americans. Tubman was born into slavery in 1822 in Dorchester County.

Escape

She fought for the rights of those left behind and mistreated. She often wore disguises, until her successful escape in 1849. Eventually, he would return to Maryland in 1850 to become the conductor of the Underground Railroad. A relative of Tubman, Ernestine Wyatt, told WMDT she had a one-of-a-kind attitude.

“She didn’t wait for someone else to do something, she did it herself. And most people either don’t do anything at all, or wait for someone else to do it for them.”

The Underground Railroad

Tubman is known for successfully rescuing 70 other slaves until the Civil War. Her famous quote, “I never ran my train off the track, and I never lost a passenger.” – Reflects her mindset as she traveled to and from Philadelphia to secure safety for the enslaved. Wyatt hopes African Americans don’t lose sight of their cultural history. “It helps us make you feel whole, and having that history makes you stronger.”

Tubman has continued to inspire countless African Americans across the country. Linda Harris, a local historian at the Harriet Tubman Educational Center, said the slaying of George Floyd changed her perspective on society. The incident encouraged her to follow in Tubman’s footsteps. She began looking via Facebook for people who would want to travel alongside her on the same journey Tubman traveled on the railroad. The journey would take 8 days, Harris said she wasn’t as free as she thought.

TidalHealth's Free Bariatric Seminar

Start your weight-loss journey today

Are you looking to lose weight and kickstart your journey to a healthier, happier life? If so, consider attending a free bariatric seminar hosted by TidalHealth.

These informative sessions, focusing primarily on surgical interventions, also present a pathway to the medical weight loss program for those who find surgery isn’t the right fit for them.

TidalHealth’s free bariatric seminars occur twice a month, with sessions scheduled on the second Thursday at 6 pm and the last Saturday at 9 am.

Led by experienced surgeons, these seminars provide attendees with the chance to meet and engage with a surgeon before leaving the facility.

The duration of the seminars varies, typically lasting between one to two hours, contingent on the number of questions raised by participants. Patients may attend alone or bring a support person.

Attending the seminar serves as a prerequisite for entering the surgical weight-loss program. Patients cannot proceed to consultations with a surgeon without first participating in this informative session.

Vertuous Viruses - Horn Point Lab Series

Presented by Professor Joaquín Martínez Martínez

Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on Earth, capable of infecting all forms of life! While they are often associated with diseases we want to avoid, they also play a critical and often overlooked role in maintaining the balance of our planet’s ecosystems. In the oceans, viruses help regulate biological and chemical processes and even serve as food for other microbes.

Join ocean virus ecologist Joaquín Martínez Martínez, a new faculty member at Horn Point, for a discussion on the fascinating vital role viruses play in marine life and ocean health. Discover how understanding viral infection is important to find solutions to pressing environmental challenges.

Pre-registration is requested. Attendees can register for one or more of the talks online:

Preserving the History of Silent City Cemetery

The Dorchester County Historical Society will be partnering with the organization, Urban Grid for a special evening presentation. The organization will be soon working towards continual preservation of Silent City Cemetery, which is a historic African American burial ground just outside of Cambridge. For many years it sat in disrepair, and DCHS is looking forward to working with Urban Grid as they begin its upkeep. This February presentation will be free and open to the public, and it will serve as a time to learn about Silent City, to get to know Urban Grid and their work in Dorchester County, and to hear about the goals in place for its ongoing preservation. DCHS in particular will be doing further research and collecting information from the public to add to the documentation on the cemetery within their library.

Detailed Information for each event can be found on our website: www.dorchesterchamber.org/events/calendar/

With the current COVID conditions and CDC Guidelines, Please always check with the organization holding the event to make sure the events are still being held. Please be safe and take necessary precautions.
