Dorchester Co. Preparing for 1st Explore the Shore Outdoor Expo
(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – In Dorchester County, they’re getting ready to showcase all the Eastern Shore has to offer for nature lovers.
Several groups are putting on the first ever Explore the Shore Outdoor Expo in Cambridge this weekend.
It’s part of the year-long celebration of the state of Maryland’s 250th birthday.
The expo will showcase local businesses, different outdoor lifestyles, the taste of different wild game, and more, proving the beach isn’t all the eastern shore has to offer.
“So this is very, very, very much Dorchester County. It’s a one stop shop for the exploring the shore. And again, it’s celebrating America’s 250, America’s, turning 250 years old. So we are celebrating. This is one of our events.” says Dorchester Tourism director, Holly Gilpin.

Cambridge Arts: The Child Star at Star Child
Right across the street from Black Water Bakery in Downtown Cambridge is now The Star Child Family Trading Company, a creative, handmade-focused shop with a whimsical, magical, and nature-inspired aesthetic. The atmosphere is kitschy and comfortable, the offerings eclectic and attractive. They offer candles, original art, sugar scrubs, kimono-style wraps, hand-sewn bags, crochet hats, blown glass décor, and unique woodwork pieces from local and regional artists.
Owner Loralie Marie Caciolo (legal name Ami Johnson, and she may still reflexively introduce herself that way) was a candle-making vendor at local events who had wanted to own a downtown shop since she moved to Cambridge 30 years ago. She says that what makes her place special is that she has given local creators a brick-and-mortar space to showcase their works and form a community.

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Students across Dorchester County are setting their sights on potential colleges.
It’s all thanks to the Dorchester County Health Department’s Youth Action Council organizing a college fair across the county’s two high schools.
Organizer, Robin Stanley says students wanted to become more familiar with colleges and universities across the state.
So they worked with Dorchester County Public Schools to bring more than 20 colleges to the two schools.

From the shores of Vienna, the winding Nanticoke River reminds us of centuries of crossings, memories, and decisions.
At the eastern end of Vienna’s Race Street, where the pavement turns into a concrete boat ramp, the Nanticoke River lay frozen during our recent cold snap. The ramp slopes cleanly into the water, a quiet ending to a road that once carried people across rather than stopping them short.
Long before ferries or bridges, this shoreline was known as Emperor’s Landing, a Nanticoke trading site and gathering place. The river was a transportation corridor for Indigenous communities for centuries, and this bank served as a point of exchange long before Vienna appeared on any colonial map. The sense of passage that lingers here today is older than the town itself.
From 1671 to 1828, a ferry crossed somewhere along this stretch. It carried travelers, livestock, wagons, and, later, early automobiles. A tollhouse once stood near the foot of Race Street – a small, plain structure that anchored the crossing and kept the accounts.

United Way kicks off Over the Edge event in Downtown Salisbury
SALISBURY, Md. — The United Way launched its annual Over the Edge event early this morning at the Ross apartment building in Downtown Salisbury, with rappellers sharing their excitement about the experience.
In less than three months, the nonprofit will return to the tallest building in Downtown Salisbury — a 14-story apartment complex — where participants will rappel down in support of the organization’s mission.
United Way of Lower Eastern Shore President and CEO Pam Gregory explained that the event supports ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), which represents a large portion of the community. “On average, across the lower shore counties, 47% of households, whether those are seniors, people with disabilities, or hardworking families often working multiple jobs, are really struggling to make ends meet,” Gregory said.
Last year, the event saw 45 rappellers, but this year, the goal is to double that number. “Our goal is 90. We want to double the effort,” said Gregory. “So my call out to the community is please come alongside us. If you’re looking for a really fun way to check off a bucket list, but also help neighbors, this is a really pivotal way to do it and make a big statement for our community.”
Along with the goal of 90 rappellers, United Way is also aiming to raise $111,000 to support ALICE families.

For All Seasons Connects Acts of Kindness & Our Mental Health
For All Seasons, a nonprofit mental health agency and rape crisis center serving the Eastern Shore of Maryland, is recognizing National Random Acts of Kindness Week, February 14 to 20, 2026, to highlight how kindness can benefit our mental health. The American Psychiatric Association reports that recent research from the University of Ohio shows that acts of kindness benefit both the givers’ and the receivers’ mental health. An “act of kindness” refers to a good or helpful action intentionally directed toward another person without need for recognition or reward.
Research shows that performing acts of kindness may help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety because it fosters social connection and a sense of belonging while also helping people shift focus away from their own symptoms. Kindness can also be contagious. People who receive acts of kindness are more likely to pass them on, creating a ripple effect that can be more powerful than we realize.
“Kindness can increase happiness and self-esteem while decreasing stress and emotional reactivity," shares Katie Theeke, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer at For All Seasons.

UM Shore Regional Health Earns Multiple American Heart Association Awards for Excellence in Cardiovascular Care
UM Shore Regional Health (UM SRH) has earned multiple American Heart Association (AHA) awards recognizing its commitment to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care for patients experiencing heart disease and the most severe heart attacks. Together, these honors highlight excellence in clinical performance, rapid intervention, and regional collaboration — all focused on improving outcomes and saving lives. UM Shore Regional Health is a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System.
These awards honor hospitals that offer rapid, research-based care to people experiencing a specific type of heart attack known as an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), known to be more severe and dangerous than other types of heart attacks. Studies show patients experience better outcomes, shorter recovery times, and fewer hospital readmissions when care teams adhere to evidence-based protocols.
UM SRH received the Mission: Lifeline® Regional Award for its regional collaboration regarding the care for those experiencing the most severe heart attacks. The Mission: Lifeline Regional achievement award is earned by hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to work with their referring and receiving hospital partners, as well as EMS, to establish a system of care based on the most up-to-date research-based guidelines as outlined by the American Heart Association.

Museum Economic Impact Listening Session (Eastern Shore)
You're invited to join this event hosted by the Dorchester County Historical Society
Responding to a need in the field, Maryland Museums Association applied for and received funding from competitive grant programs at the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority and Preservation Maryland to commission an economic impact study of Maryland’s museum sector.
MMA selected Parker Strategy Group to complete the project as expert consultant. Through this contract with Parker Strategy Group, MMA will measure and interpret the statewide and local economic contributions of museums, contextualize these findings within related industries (e.g., tourism, recreation, revitalization), and provide a final report suitable for widespread use and distribution for industry reference, public awareness, legislative advocacy, and/or goal-setting purposes.
Each 1.5 hour meeting will include a brief presentation by Parker Strategy Group about existing impact data and early survey results, followed by a facilitated discussion to bring to light the impact and needs of Maryland's museums.
All are welcome to attend one or more sessions. RSVP appreciated but not required. Come as you are! Bring data, reports, or materials to share if you care to, but certainly not required.
