New General Store Brings Convenience and Conversation to Southern Dorchester County |
TODDVILLE, Md. - 'Elijah's General Store' has become the first convenience store serving several communities in Southern Dorchester County in a number of years.
Prior to the store's opening late last year, residents had to drive roughly 40 minutes just for a loaf of bread or a carton of milk. But the store is so much more than a convenience, it's a central meeting point for people in these sparsely populated communities, from Crapo to Crocheron.
"For a lot, especially the elderly residents, it's really made it so they can still live down here as they've told me," said owner David Beverley.
He may be a "come here" not a "from here" to this part of Dorchester County, but he's quickly gained the respect and admiration of the people of this area.

Habitat Choptank honors legacy of Jimmy Carter at recent home dedication | |
After 100 years of advocacy, humanitarianism, and service, Former President Jimmy Carter passed away on December 29, 2024. His dedication to affordable homeownership and his support of Habitat for Humanity for over 35 years of his life is one that made monumental impact all across the world.
President Carter’s passion was fueled in March of 1984, when he worked with Habitat for the first time in Americus, Georgia. He and his wife quickly realized the alignment of Habitat’s mission to their personal values and became regular volunteers and supporters of Habitat. Over the years, President and Mrs. Carter have worked alongside over 108,100 volunteers who have built, renovated or repaired more than 4,447 homes in 14 countries, all while raising awareness of the critical need for affordable housing.
In honor of his passing, Habitat Choptank took time during a recent home dedication on Wells Street in Cambridge to remember him and the legacy he left for us to carry on. Attendees also received a t-shirt in memory of Jimmy Carter, reading “Thanks Mr. President, we will take it from here!”
It is obvious the impact President Jimmy Carter made and continues to make for many individuals all over the world. For those interested in giving in his honor to support the continued efforts of affordable housing in Dorchester and Talbot County, consider donating in memory of Jimmy Carter here. In appreciation, the first fifty donors will receive a commemorative magazine about his legacy.

Shore Legal Access Welcomes Matt Arthur, Esq. as Equal Justice Works Housing Justice Program Fellow |
Shore Legal Access, a nonprofit organization that uses the legal system to protect and advance the economic stability of limited-incomeindividuals and households on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, welcomes attorney Matt Arthur, Esq. as its new Equal Justice Works Housing Justice Program Fellow. Arthur, who recently graduated from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, will join Shore Legal Access' housing team, which provides free representation to tenants facing eviction in the eight counties the organization serves: Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester.
“We are honored to continue our partnership with Equal Justice Works and excited to welcome Matt to our team,” Shore Legal Access Executive Director Meredith Girard, Esq. said. “He brings experience working with tenants facing eviction and a passion for advancing access to justice for Eastern Shore residents who need it most. Matt will help us ensure that more tenants remain in their homes.”
Equal Justice Works’ mission is to create opportunities for lawyers to transform their passion for equal justice into a lifelong commitment to public service. The prestigious Housing Justice Program Fellowship, which places attorneys for a two-year period with organizations working at the front lines to advance access to justice, was created to provide representation for limited-means individuals who are currently, or at risk of, experiencing housing instability and involuntary displacement, particularly due to eviction. Since 2022, Shore Legal Access has hosted four Fellows, including Arthur. Three former Fellows, Bibi Barnes, Esq., Elliett Earhart, and Pete Rolph, Esq., were hired to Shore Legal Access’ staff in 2024 to continue their important housing work.

Book Drive
The Dorchester County Public Library kicked off Black History Month with a community Book Drive for 5 partner organizations: The Cambridge Boys & Girls Club, New Beginnings Community Center, Harvesting Hope Youth & Family Wellness (Reading Socials), the Cambridge Empowerment Center, and the Pauline F. & W. David Robbins Family YMCA. This drive is part of a statewide initiative with the Maryland Commission on African American History: https://africanamerican.maryland.gov/ and aligns with our goals to get more books out into the communities facing barriers to access.
New/like new/gently used titles can be donated to either library branch from now until April 26th. The Library will then divvy up and present the donated books to our community partners to house within their organizations for their after-school programs or to distribute to the children and families they serve.
Donated titles must feature Black characters, culture, and experiences, and can be fiction or non fiction, for ages 3+. Recommended titles/authors can be selected from our Amazon Wishlist (https://a.co/265R3kL) and will ship directly to the Cambridge Library.
Help us reach our goal of 250 books by sharing this information or possibly donating a book to the Drive!
Please feel free to email any questions to Julie

Preserving the History of Silent City Cemetery
The Dorchester County Historical Society will be partnering with the organization, Urban Grid for a special evening presentation. For many years it sat in disrepair, and DCHS is looking forward to working with Urban Grid as they begin its upkeep. This February presentation will be free and open to the public, and it will serve as a time to learn about Silent City, to get to know Urban Grid and their work in Dorchester County, and to hear about the goals in place for its ongoing preservation. DCHS in particular will be doing further research and collecting information from the public to add to the documentation on the cemetery within their library.

Shells and rocks: paving the way to increase oyster habitat in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, a Horn Point Lab Series
Presented by Professor Elizabeth North
Baby oysters prefer to grow on the shells of other oysters. They sense that this must be a good home for an oyster! But because oyster shells are in short supply, scientists are experimenting with other materials to find out what surfaces can support healthy populations. Professor Elizabeth North will take attendees on the science journey to evaluate solutions to increase oysters and their habitat in the Bay.
Pre-registration is requested. Attendees can register for one or more of the talks online:

SDFM Presents "The Transpeninsular Line"
The Transpeninsular line story intrigued Mr. Hemcher after hearing a talk at the Brick Church on Taylors Island in 2014 the day of the Battle of the Ice Mound Bicentennial. And then with the development of the James Island project he became interested again due to the fact that the terminus (end) of the Transpeninsular Line ended on Taylors Island at what was in the 1700's James Point. So, after completing research at the Dorchester and Talbot County Libraries he would like to share the information he has found and welcomes audience participation.
George Hemcher is a retired tradesman that has a keen interest in history. Mostly focused on WW2 history he has traveled to Belgium, Luxembourg and France following in his father’s footsteps with the Armored Division.
He had owned property at Robinson Neck Rd on Taylors Island for many years and now lives in South East Pennsylvania.
The South Dorchester Folk Museum (SDFM), in cooperation with the Dorchester County Historical Society, presents this FREE program in its lecture series about local history. For more information about the SDFM, visit our website, www.sdfmuseum.net, or call 410-228-6175. The public is warmly invited to attend. Reservations are not needed.
