Dorchester County is More Than Just a Pit Stop on the Way to Ocean City

thumbnail_FALL-CHURCH-CREEK-AT-UGRR-VC_CMYK image

About an hour and a half from Baltimore, the Eastern Shore province is full of year-round wonder—starting with its winter muskrat festival.

If you can’t judge a book by its cover, surely you can’t gauge a place by seeing it from the highway. Take Dorchester County. Beachgoers use the scant 16 miles of Route 50 that pass-through Dorchester on their way to Ocean City. Other travelers barely look around as they head straight for the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay, the self-contained luxury golf resort, marina, beach, and spa located in its biggest town on the banks of the Choptank River. But there’s more to this roughly heart-shaped, indelibly Eastern Shore province about an hour and a half from Baltimore.

First, there’s Cambridge, Dorchester’s epicenter. Established in 1684, the small “city” most recently reimagined itself some 25 years ago, when revitalization began downtown and the Hyatt came along.

After Seven Years, Sunburst Pharm is a Steady Civic Asset in Cambridge

When Darryl Hill applied for a cannabis dispensary license in Maryland, he did not look toward Baltimore or the Washington suburbs. He chose Cambridge, and for a good reason.

Dorchester County has long ranked among the state’s lower-income jurisdictions, with fewer large private employers and slower commercial growth than many parts of central Maryland. Hill said that reality was not a drawback, but the point: to establish a new, durable business in a town that has long struggled with economic headwinds.

“I picked Cambridge purposely for the retail license because of the low-income elements,” Hill said. “As one of the lower-income counties in the state, new jobs and income streams were important. So I picked it for that reason, to boost the local economy.”

Seven years later, Sunburst Pharm employs 24 people at the dispensary located in a converted 7-Eleven building on Meteor Avenue, and he has become a steady taxpayer and Chamber of Commerce member in a town that continues to court private investment. Hill speaks about payroll before profit.

“All our hires are local people,” he said. “Most live right here, nearby.”

Hill, 82, had already lived a remarkable life before becoming a cannabis entrepreneur in his seventies. In the early 1960s, he helped break the color barrier in college football as the first Black player to compete on scholarship at the University of Maryland.

Cambridge Time Machine: Cambridge Junior High

When Cambridge needed a new school and people needed jobs in the late 1930s, the city took advantage of President Roosevelt’s Public Works Administration, which paid 60% of the wages of workmen employed to build public buildings. Architect Edwin Wilson Booth was hired, and the work of constructing the school went forward under the direction of the contractors Charles E. Brohawn and Bros. By January 1, 1940, Cambridge Upper Elementary School on Glasgow Street was complete, but Dedication Services were delayed until November 18. The first principal was W. Paul Jones. In 1947, the school’s name was changed to Cambridge Junior High. The building is currently the home of the Dorchester County Board of Education.
