CAMBRIDGE — Students, staff, and community members came together at the Dorchester Career and Technology Center on Feb. 1 to revitalize the school’s greenhouse in preparation for the upcoming spring season.

Spearheaded by Dorchester County Board of Education Member Chris Wheedleton, the cleanup event was a collaborative effort to refresh the space and spark conversations about sustainability and future community partnerships.

Volunteers worked to clean, reorganize and reset the greenhouse to create a thriving environment for new growth.

The event was not only an opportunity to maintain the space, but also to strengthen community bonds. After the cleanup, participants engaged in discussions on how to promote sustainable practices and maximize the greenhouse’s potential as an educational and environmental resource.

Choptank Health recognizes February as National School-Based Health Care Awareness Month

2025ChoptankHealth_SchoolBasedHealthCare_MedicalProviders25 image

Choptank Community Health System is joining the National School-Based Health Care Awareness Month celebration this February to highlight how school-based health centers help improve access to health care for children and adolescents.

School-based health centers bring essential healthcare services directly to schools, where students spend much of their time. By integrating health care with education, the centers ensure students can thrive, grow, and reach their full potential.

“All children and adolescents deserve the opportunity to grow into the young adults we know they can be,” said Choptank Health CEO and President Sara Rich. “But too often, barriers to health care stand in their way. School-based health centers bridge that gap, ensuring students receive the support they need to succeed academically and in life.”

Across the country, states are organizing activities throughout February to raise awareness, including legislative visits, state capitol events, youth advocacy efforts, and special recognitions. These initiatives emphasize the importance of SBHCs in improving health outcomes and making a lasting impact on the lives of young people.

UM Shore Regional Health Addresses CT Technologist Shortage

2025DuPlessis-Queroli image

EASTON, Md. (February 21, 2025) – When University of Maryland Shore Regional Health (UM SRH), a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System, experienced a shortage of computed tomography (CT) technologists on the Eastern Shore, leadership got creative - designing a path to CT certification for SRH team members that includes technical on-site clinical training at SRH and academic instruction at schools such as Community College of Baltimore County, Johns Hopkins Schools of Medical Imaging or WOR-WIC Community College.

“Thanks to this new training program, we filled 14 open CT technologist positions,” said Penny Olivi, Director, Imaging Services, UM SRH. “We are very proud of this team effort to achieve 100% staffing. Creativity and hard work helped us create and sustain a structured, financially supported, on-the-job training program for our radiology technologists to earn an advanced certification as CT technologists.”

“There are no CT programs offered by community colleges on the shore, so it made sense to create our own training program to help us meet our staffing needs,” said Margo Abbas, Radiology Manager, UM SRH. “CT techs are vital members of our team. They are highly trained professionals who operate CT scanners, which produce detailed, cross-sectional images of the body's internal organs. These images are essential to physicians in diagnosing and monitoring medical conditions, including cancer, vascular disease and traumatic injury.”

The new program includes 480 hours of training time during 12 weeks, and requires an application process, an agreement to continue employment with UM SRH after the successful completion of training and registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Trainers are UM SRH registered CT techs who demonstrate a strong knowledge of the field and volunteer to work one-on-one with candidates for one month, accomplishing specific goals and milestone check-ins to ensure their trainee’s success.

Book Drive

The Dorchester County Public Library kicked off Black History Month with a community Book Drive for 5 partner organizations: The Cambridge Boys & Girls Club, New Beginnings Community Center, Harvesting Hope Youth & Family Wellness (Reading Socials), the Cambridge Empowerment Center, and the Pauline F. & W. David Robbins Family YMCA. This drive is part of a statewide initiative with the Maryland Commission on African American History: https://africanamerican.maryland.gov/ and aligns with our goals to get more books out into the communities facing barriers to access.

New/like new/gently used titles can be donated to either library branch from now until April 26th. The Library will then divvy up and present the donated books to our community partners to house within their organizations for their after-school programs or to distribute to the children and families they serve.

Donated titles must feature Black characters, culture, and experiences, and can be fiction or non fiction, for ages 3+. Recommended titles/authors can be selected from our Amazon Wishlist (https://a.co/265R3kL) and will ship directly to the Cambridge Library.

Help us reach our goal of 250 books by sharing this information or possibly donating a book to the Drive!

Virtuous Viruses - Horn Point Lab Series

Presented by Professor Joaquín Martínez Martínez

Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on Earth, capable of infecting all forms of life! While they are often associated with diseases we want to avoid, they also play a critical and often overlooked role in maintaining the balance of our planet’s ecosystems. In the oceans, viruses help regulate biological and chemical processes and even serve as food for other microbes.

Join ocean virus ecologist Joaquín Martínez Martínez, a new faculty member at Horn Point, for a discussion on the fascinating vital role viruses play in marine life and ocean health. Discover how understanding viral infection is important to find solutions to pressing environmental challenges.

Preserving the History of Silent City Cemetery

The Dorchester County Historical Society will be partnering with the organization, Urban Grid for a special evening presentation. The organization will be soon working towards continual preservation of Silent City Cemetery, which is a historic African American burial ground just outside of Cambridge. For many years it sat in disrepair, and DCHS is looking forward to working with Urban Grid as they begin its upkeep. This February presentation will be free and open to the public, and it will serve as a time to learn about Silent City, to get to know Urban Grid and their work in Dorchester County, and to hear about the goals in place for its ongoing preservation. DCHS in particular will be doing further research and collecting information from the public to add to the documentation on the cemetery within their library.

Shells and rocks: paving the way to increase oyster habitat in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, a Horn Point Lab Series

Presented by Professor Elizabeth North

Baby oysters prefer to grow on the shells of other oysters. They sense that this must be a good home for an oyster! SDFM Presents "The Transpeninsular Line"

The Transpeninsular line story intrigued Mr. Hemcher after hearing a talk at the Brick Church on Taylors Island in 2014 the day of the Battle of the Ice Mound Bicentennial. And then with the development of the James Island project he became interested again due to the fact that the terminus (end) of the Transpeninsular Line ended on Taylors Island at what was in the 1700's James Point. So, after completing research at the Dorchester and Talbot County Libraries he would like to share the information he has found and welcomes audience participation.

George Hemcher is a retired tradesman that has a keen interest in history. Mostly focused on WW2 history he has traveled to Belgium, Luxembourg and France following in his father’s footsteps with the Armored Division.

He had owned property at Robinson Neck Rd on Taylors Island for many years and now lives in South East Pennsylvania.

The South Dorchester Folk Museum (SDFM), in cooperation with the Dorchester County Historical Society, presents this FREE program in its lecture series about local history. For more information about the SDFM, visit our website, www.sdfmuseum.net, or call 410-228-6175. The public is warmly invited to attend. Reservations are not needed.

When waters bloom: Harmful Algal Blooms, a Horn Point Lab Series

Presented by Professor Pat Glibert

Every drop of water is teaming with life, including microscopic algae. Most are beneficial and provide the food on which all aquatic life depends. However, some are harmful, even toxic, not only for fish but people. These harmful events are increasing around the world.  Being able to predict how algae will respond to changes in the environment is key to developing strategies to protect ecosystems and the food web.  Phytoplankton ecologist, Professor Pat Glibert--author of a new comprehensive book on the subject--will lead attendees through the latest research on harmful algal blooms.

Pre-registration is requested. Attendees can register for one or more of the talks online:
