Dorchester Historical Society Rings in New Year with Tradition
(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – And one Dorchester County group is preparing to ring in the new year while celebrating history.
The Dorchester County Historical Society is hosting their annual Traditional Tea Event Saturday to celebrate the start of the new year.
Participants will get to enjoy teas as if they were drinking them over 250 years ago.
The Historical Society’s Director says he’s looking forward to celebrating the coming year and honoring the past at the same time.
“To experience and taste parts of it and imagine and connect to what they felt in a new year. Was it hope? Was it trepidation? Was it a bit of luck or a bit of bad luck? We experienced exactly what they did over 250 years ago,” says Historical Society Director, Marcos Salaverria.

A Chilly Splash into the New Year: Cambridge’s New Polar Plunge Tradition
Under cloudy skies and the Choptank River at a chilly 34 degrees, the Hyatt Regency’s waterfront was temporarily transformed on Saturday into a scene of joyful defiance against the winter, as dozens of community members gathered for the Cambridge Rotary Club’s inaugural “Choptank Chill & Cheer” polar plunge.
Blending family-friendly fun and heartfelt support for an important local cause, the event drew brave souls of all stripes – athletes, families with kids, and even local politicians – to raise visibility for the Mid-Shore Council of Family Violence, a nonprofit that has served survivors across the Mid-Shore for over 40 years.
By taking the plunge, participants earned the right to a dip in the hotel’s hot tub and hot chocolate back to the warmth of the resort’s Water’s Edge Grill, a scenic venue overlooking the river and private beach.
Inclusivity was key to the event’s success, Cambridge Rotary President Angie Hengst said. Attendees could choose to plunge or not, cheer on others from the shore, and enjoy the festivities. She noted about 88 registrations, with flexibility allowing last-minute decisions.
“We saw a niche after the Santa Swim ended,” she said. “Cambridge needed a polar plunge, and this fit perfectly.” The idea originated with Catherine Roper, a seasoned event planner, Rotary member, and MSCFV’s development director.

Local farmers talk 2026 Doe Harvest Challenge coming at top of new year
DELMARVA. – Farmers from across the lower Eastern Shore held a meeting last night for the 2026 “Doe Harvest Challenge,” which is a way for local farmers to combat the deer problem on farmland.
The challenge is on the horizon, and farmers from Somerset, Wicomico, Dorchester, and Worcester are preparing for the event. Mike Knauer represents Dorchester County, he said the doe harvest is a benefit for everybody.
“We help remove the deer that we need to remove from crop damage, and we also help donate deer to the Maryland Food Bank.”
From January 9th to January 11th, each whitetail or sika harvested will allow for hunters to recieve a ticket. From there, they will be placed in a drawing for a chance to win $1,000.
Knauer says the deer population has devastated his county.
“Sika deer has been a huge problem for us the last 15 to 20 years. And talking to these guys, they are starting to migrate across the Nanticoke, so eventually if we don’t control them in Dorchester, it could be a bigger problem for the other counties.”
It’s a team effort to help control the deer population. Knauer tells WMDT that sika deer are different from whitetails. They are typically tougher and durable, many swimming through the rivers to get to crops. They also tend to move in large groups, in an attempt to run off whitetails.

ESLC Protects 170-Acre Dorchester Farm with New WILD Grant
A Dorchester County family farm near Vienna has gained permanent protection from future housing subdivisions, warehouses, and commercial sprawl thanks to a pair of federal programs that conservation leaders hope will safeguard more of the Eastern Shore’s rural landscape.
Late last year, the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy (ESLC) completed a conservation easement on the 170 acres of farmland and woodland owned by the Sellers family near the Nanticoke River. The agreement ensures the property will remain open to farming and wildlife while permanently blocking most types of development.
This project marks the first on the Eastern Shore to use funding from the Chesapeake Watershed Investments for Landscape Defense program, known as Chesapeake WILD. To complete the easement, ESLC paired those dollars with money from the U.S. Navy’s Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration program, or REPI.
Steve Kline, ESLC’s president and chief executive officer, said the two programs working together show a powerful new way to keep large blocks of land from being paved over.
“We’re trying to protect the property in perpetuity,” Kline said. “That means protecting its agricultural viability and its open space viability forever.”
A conservation easement is a voluntary agreement between a landowner and a land trust. The owner gives up the right to build houses, stores, or factories on the property. Farming, hunting, and other traditional rural activities can continue. The restrictions stay with the land’s deed, no matter who owns it in the future.
