MidShore Meals til Monday
March 27, 2025 - 5:30 p.m.
516 Race Street, Cambridge, MD
MidShore Meals til Monday does extraordinary work providing support for the youth in our community. Late last year they found themselves needing a new "home," and through the support in the community they found one. They are inviting everyone to a Business After Hours to show off, not only their new location at 516 Race Street in Cambridge, but also a Ribbon Cutting to celebrate their new truck. The small, dedicated team works tirelessly to feed the less fortunate children in our community by coordinating the efforts of a large congregation of volunteers.
We hope you will join us on Thursday, March 27 to welcome them to their new Downtown Cambridge location and to see for yourself how they do such great work. If you have not already been a volunteer, we believe this will make you want to find time and/or money to support them. There is plenty of parking in the City of Cambridge parking lot in the 500 block of Race Street.

Cambridge Main Street announces Spring Fling event |
Spring is in the air, but long before the change of seasons, Cambridge Main Street, Inc., began working on their premier fundraising event – their annual Spring Fling.
The 2025 Spring Fling, scheduled for Saturday, April 26, from 5:30-11 p.m., will be held at a new venue this year – The Packing House, located on Dorchester Avenue, in Cambridge, and once part of Phillips Packing Company.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Cross Street Partners, the brilliant minds behind the revitalization of The Packing House, to host this year’s Spring Fling, in such a historic Cambridge landmark,” says Christina Wingate-Spence, Executive Director of Cambridge Main Street. “Our organization strives to celebrate the rich heritage and revitalization of Cambridge, so we welcomed the opportunity to host this annual event, in a space that plays a vital role in our community’s industrial history.”
Spring Fling has a full schedule, including hors d’oeuvres and dinner, featuring the “Tastes of Main Street,” with several Cambridge eateries preparing dishes for the specially curated menu; live and silent auctions; and live music performed by Party Fowl Band, a Delaware-based band with a following across Delmarva, Baltimore and Washington D.C. Tickets for the event are available for purchase, at $95 per person. Cambridge Main Street also has several sponsorship levels available for area businesses and individuals wanting to support the event.

Artifacts Linked to Harriet Tubman and Her Father Discovered in Dorchester County | |
DORCHESTER COUNTY, Md. — Archaeologists in Maryland have uncovered artifacts believed to have belonged to Harriet Tubman and her father, Ben Ross, at a site deep within the wetlands of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.
A team from the Maryland Department of Transportation spent four years studying the site of Ross’s home, uncovering kitchenware, bones, and other historical items.
“When we actually purchased Peter’s Neck in February of 2020, we weren’t sure then that there was this history there, but we had heard rumors about it,” said Marcia Pradines-Long, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge manager.
That prompted the state to investigate.
“They believed that Harriet Tubman’s father, Ben Ross, had 10 acres in this old house on part of the property,” Pradines-Long said.
Among the discoveries were broken pieces of pottery from plates or bowls, a silver spoon, and clothing buttons.

Junior Achievement hosts 7th annual ‘Inspire Day’ at Wicomico Civic Center |
SALISBURY, Md. – Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore hosted ‘Inspire Day’ for 8th-grade middle schoolers. Roughly 150 businesses seek to engage students’ interest. The event hoped to inspire youth and help them find a career path.
The President of the organization, Jayme Hayes, hopes to give back to the younger generation. “The goal of today is to inspire youth to see all the opportunities here on the Eastern Shore. We have everything from a weather balloon, sonograms, and virtual flight simulators.”
Over 4,500 students from across the eastern shore traveled to the Wicomico Civic Center. Schools from Wicomico County to Accomack County participated. There were representatives from Delmarva Power, the Salisbury Fire Department, and NASA. It was a chance to get students hands-on experiences. An 8th-grade student from Pocomoke Middle School said she might have found a career path.

Cambridge Time Machine: Going to work at the packing house |
The packing houses played a vital role in Cambridge’s economy from the late 1800s through the 1950s. In fact, the city faced hard times once they were gone, as so many locals worked in them, canning and packaging many types of food. The packing houses even provided food to the US military during World War II.

Chicone Village Day celebrates Native Culture at Handsell |
The 12th annual Chicone Village Day will take place Saturday, April 26th at the Handsell Historic Site (4837 Indiantown Road) in Vienna, MD. Sponsored by the Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance (NHPA), the day-long celebration features demonstrations, workshops, talks, and displays at Handsell’s Chicone Village, which includes a Native dwelling house, work shelter, and garden. It’s a must-see, family-friendly event that brings history to life.
Chicone Village Day honors the culture of the Eastern Woodland Native People who inhabited the eastern part of what is now the United States and includes the Delmarva peninsula. Numerous tribes lived on the Eastern Shore prior to the arrival of Europeans. John Smith, during his Chesapeake Bay voyage in the early 1600s, noted that one of the largest villages was located in the area of Chicone Creek, just north of Vienna. Documentation suggests that the “Chicacoan” (Chicone) site was the capital village of the Eastern Shore tribes and home of the paramount chief.

|
UM Shore Regional Health (UM SRH) recently received the 2025-2026 American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) Apex Award for their exemplary demonstration of best practices in respiratory care and education in the Acute Care Hospital category. UM SRH is a member hospital of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS). The University of Maryland Medical Center, the System’s flagship academic hospital in Baltimore, also received this recognition.
“As one of only 28 hospitals to receive the 2025-2026 Apex Award, this speaks volumes about our Respiratory Care Services team and our commitment to high-quality patient care,” said Lu Ann Brady, MSPH, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, UM SRH. “This designation is a testament to UMMS and our journey to becoming a High Reliability Organization, which prioritizes maintaining the safety of patients and team members in all areas of patient care.”
AARC is the leading the advancement of the respiratory care profession around the world. The Apex Award distinguishes organizations for their commitment to excellence in professional development, evidence-based care and quality improvement. The Apex Award includes six recognition categories: Acute care hospitals, international acute care, long-term care facilities, education programs, home medical equipment companies and dedicated transport teams. The AARC Apex Recognition Award was developed in 2017 to recognize respiratory care departments and programs that demonstrate high-quality care and outstanding higher education.

Book Drive
The Dorchester County Public Library kicked off Black History Month with a community Book Drive for 5 partner organizations: The Cambridge Boys & Girls Club, New Beginnings Community Center, Harvesting Hope Youth & Family Wellness (Reading Socials), the Cambridge Empowerment Center, and the Pauline F. & W. David Robbins Family YMCA. This drive is part of a statewide initiative with the Maryland Commission on African American History: https://africanamerican.maryland.gov/ and aligns with our goals to get more books out into the communities facing barriers to access.
New/like new/gently used titles can be donated to either library branch from now until April 26th. The Library will then divvy up and present the donated books to our community partners to house within their organizations for their after-school programs or to distribute to the children and families they serve.
Donated titles must feature Black characters, culture, and experiences, and can be fiction or non fiction, for ages 3+. Recommended titles/authors can be selected from our Amazon Wishlist (https://a.co/265R3kL) and will ship directly to the Cambridge Library.
Help us reach our goal of 250 books by sharing this information or possibly donating a book to the Drive!
Please feel free to email any questions to Julie
