Midshore Meals til Monday receives new refrigerated truck to boost service

thumbnail-sideview image

DORCHESTER COUNTY, Md. – Midshore Meals til Monday has gotten a new refrigerated truck.

The new state-of-the-art truck will allow organizations to deliver weekend food bags to children. It will also help address food insecurity across the area.

With the ability to store frozen foods, executive director Pam Allen believes it gives them greater expansion. “Farmers and organizations who want to donate watermelons or sweet potatoes, this truck will allow us the ability to pick those large items up.”

Allen also said the program can grow exponentially. “Part of our program is to ensure not only perishable foods, but fresh foods. That’s something we would love to do.”

The Arc’s Chesapeake Community Development Walking the Walk in Easton with Ross Benincasa

While the phase “on probation” is too strong in describing the first few years of The Arc Central Chesapeake Region’s entry into the Mid-Shore, the 5o year old Western Shore nonprofit knew from experience that the best way to develop a trusting relationship with Mid-Shore communities was to produce tangible results. And it’s pretty clear from hearing from Ross Benincasa, the Arc’s senior vice president of community development, with their Chesapeake Community Development subsidiary, that the Arc’s first projects in Easton have started to create that track record.

In our conversation with Ross, he discussed the organization’s transformative real estate initiative, starting with the ongoing renovation of The Primrose on Aurora Street and ending with the recently completed Port Street Commons on Port Street. This has enabled town leaders and residents to understand how committed the Arc team is to the communities they serve in building high-quality, inclusive housing.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Import Business Alert

A new threat to your business is moving quickly in Annapolis. The proposed tax on business-to-business services (HB 1554/SB 1045) will receive a hearing soon with very little notice, and we need to be prepared to respond with overwhelming business opposition.

Here's what you need to know:

  • This tax will apply to essential services your business uses daily: accounting, IT support, consulting, human resources and more.
  • Early estimates suggest this proposal could cost businesses tens of thousands annually.
  • Virginia and Delaware don't tax these services, putting Maryland businesses at a competitive disadvantage.

We need you to take THREE actions:

BE ON HIGH ALERT. A hearing will be scheduled with minimal notice. We need you ready to testify when the call comes. Please:

  • DOWNLOAD SAMPLE TESTIMONY Use our template to craft your 2-minute testimony about how this tax would impact your business.

  • COMPLETE THIS FORM Ensure we can contact you immediately when a hearing date is set.

SPREAD THE WORD

  • ACCESS The MD Chamber TOOLKIT: Share these ready-to-use materials with other business owners.
  • Forward this information to your professional network — every voice strengthens our message.

CONTACT LEGISLATORS NOW

  • SEND A MESSAGE. IT TAKES JUST 60 SECONDS. The MD Chamber platform makes it easy to reach your representatives.

Your immediate action is critical. Last year, proposed business taxes were defeated because business owners showed up in force. We need an even stronger showing this time around. We'll contact you as soon as a hearing date is confirmed. In the meantime, please reach out with any questions.

Together, we can make Maryland better for business.

Book Drive

The Dorchester County Public Library kicked off Black History Month with a community Book Drive for 5 partner organizations: The Cambridge Boys & Girls Club, New Beginnings Community Center, Harvesting Hope Youth & Family Wellness (Reading Socials), the Cambridge Empowerment Center, and the Pauline F. & W. David Robbins Family YMCA. This drive is part of a statewide initiative with the Maryland Commission on African American History: https://africanamerican.maryland.gov/ and aligns with our goals to get more books out into the communities facing barriers to access.

New/like new/gently used titles can be donated to either library branch from now until April 26th. The Library will then divvy up and present the donated books to our community partners to house within their organizations for their after-school programs or to distribute to the children and families they serve.

Donated titles must feature Black characters, culture, and experiences, and can be fiction or non fiction, for ages 3+. Recommended titles/authors can be selected from our Amazon Wishlist (https://a.co/265R3kL) and will ship directly to the Cambridge Library.

Help us reach our goal of 250 books by sharing this information or possibly donating a book to the Drive!

When waters bloom: Harmful Algal Blooms, a Horn Point Lab Series

Presented by Professor Pat Glibert

Every drop of water is teaming with life, including microscopic algae. Most are beneficial and provide the food on which all aquatic life depends. However, some are harmful, even toxic, not only for fish but people. These harmful events are increasing around the world.  Being able to predict how algae will respond to changes in the environment is key to developing strategies to protect ecosystems and the food web.  Phytoplankton ecologist, Professor Pat Glibert--author of a new comprehensive book on the subject--will lead attendees through the latest research on harmful algal blooms.

Pre-registration is requested. Attendees can register for one or more of the talks online:
