UWLES Launches Summer 2026 Dine Stay & Play United
United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore (UWLES), in partnership with the Ocean City Maryland
Hospitality Association, looks forward to welcoming back guests and visitors for the 2026 summer
season! UWLES is excited to partner with local hospitality businesses for the 10th season of our Dine, Stay, and Play United program. Last summer, local hospitality and recreational organizations raised over $23,000, demonstrating what it means to Dine, Stay and Play in Worcester County while giving back to the community and creating local impact.
Local restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues, and sporting venues can sign up with UWLES
to participate. Each business chooses its promotional menu items or stays-and-play specials
and designates a portion of those proceeds to UWLES. All proceeds stay local for UWLES and their
nonprofit partners, who help 1 in 3 Worcester and other Lower Shore County neighbors thrive. This is a unique opportunity for locals and visitors to help support the hospitality and tourism industry while giving back through philanthropic-minded Worcester County businesses from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Restaurants, lodging, and entertainment businesses of any size are welcome to participate.

The Brightside: JA Inspire brings 4,000 students to explore careers on the Eastern Shore
Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore held its version of a Super Bowl, bringing more than 4,000 students to the Wicomico County Civic Center over two days. The event highlights the impact on eighth-graders across the Eastern Shore in the latest edition of The Brightside.
The event was sponsored by Choptank Electric Cooperative.
Junior Achievement Interim President Erin Williamson said, “Welcome to JA Inspire. JA Inspire was designed to bring all eighth-graders across the Eastern Shore to one location to explore and see the possibilities for careers.”
Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore helps inspire students to branch out and learn about careers in their communities. Williamson said this is the nonprofit’s biggest event.
“Over the past two days, the grand total will be somewhere around 4,000 students from across the Eastern Shore — Accomack, Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Somerset, Wicomico, Worcester and Sussex counties. So we have about 10 counties here,” she said.
With students running around, more than 50 vendors shared what makes their jobs unique. Local businesses lined the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center, and one business literally shocked students.

Chicone Village Day celebrates Native Culture at Handsell
The Dorchester County event features living history interpreters, hands-on activities, and more.
The 13th annual Chicone Village Day will take place Saturday, April 25th at the Handsell Historic Site (4837 Indiantown Road) in Vienna, MD. Sponsored by the Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance (NHPA), the day-long celebration features demonstrations, workshops, talks, and displays at Handsell’s Chicone Village, which includes a Native dwelling house and work shelter. It’s a must-see, family-friendly event that brings history to life.
Chicone Village Day honors the culture of the Eastern Woodland Native People who inhabited the eastern part of what is now the United States and includes the Delmarva peninsula. Numerous tribes lived on the Eastern Shore prior to the arrival of Europeans. John Smith, during his Chesapeake Bay voyage in the early 1600s, noted that one of the largest villages was located in the area of Chicone Creek, just north of Vienna. Documentation suggests that the “Chicacoan” (Chicone) site was the capital village of the Eastern Shore tribes and home of the paramount chief.
