For All Season Cuts Ribbon on New Location in Cambridge

2025FASCambridgeRibbonCutting image

On October 22, For All Seasons and the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house for the agency’s new location at 407 Race Street in Cambridge. The event drew a packed crowd of community members, business owners, elected officials, agency staff, and Board members, all celebrating the opening of For All Seasons’ larger, more visible downtown site.

The relocated Cambridge location will allow For All Seasons to better meet the growing mental health needs of residents in Dorchester County and the surrounding Mid-Shore region. This expansion is part of the agency’s Bringing Mental Health to Main Street initiative, which aims to make mental health services visible, accessible, and integrated into daily community life.

In the coming weeks, For All Seasons’ Open Access™ walk-in mental health services will also be added at the Race Street office. More information about these services is available at ForAllSeasonsInc.org

‘Vanishing Landscapes’ Captures the Loss of our Chesapeake Shores

Lillie-2-scaled image

A deer stands in a flooded warehouse, staring at a forest on a television screen, as water rises slowly against second-floor windows. Nearby, a black-and-white aerial photo shows farmland overwhelmed by a sea of windowless data centers. Intricate bundles of marsh twigs and driftwood form a geometric grid on another wall.

In Vanishing Landscapes, the environment looks back at us. This new exhibition, hosted by the Dorchester Center for the Arts in Cambridge and curated by Visual Arts Coordinator Lillie Pennypacker, features 29 mostly local artists who work in painting, photography, sculpture, and fiber.

The show kicks off with a reception on November 8 at the Arts Center’s High Street gallery, with live music, light fare, and artists in attendance. It will run for eight weeks, followed by a closing reception on December 13. Both will run from 5 to 7 p.m.

Pennypacker, who grew up in Cambridge and studied art in New York, Boston, and Rome started at the Dorchester Center for the Arts in January of 2025.

“I inherited the title and theme of the exhibition, and the Executive Director encouraged me to develop it from my perspective,” she told The Spy.  “The throughline for the exhibition is our emotional, physical, and cultural connection to the environment. It’s not just documenting what’s been lost but exploring how we feel about it in our psyche and our bodies.”

Painter Patti Aaronson of Cambridge brings a personal view to the exhibit with her surreal scene of a deer gazing at a television glowing with an image of the woods as water builds up outside.

State ‘Report Card’ Shows Dorchester Schools Are Improving

Dorchester County Public Schools, long near the bottom of Maryland’s education rankings, are showing real signs of progress, with two schools receiving four of five stars, and a countywide performance moving upward, according to the Maryland State Department of Education’s latest Maryland School Report Card, released Tuesday.

A year ago, Superintendent Dr. Jymil Thompson launched a districtwide improvement drive called 23 No More,” a reference to Dorchester’s standing as the second-to-last of Maryland’s 24 school systems.

In the district’s 2024 Strategic Plan, Thompson set a bold goal of moving Dorchester from 23rd to at least 15th statewide. The new 2025 data show the district moving in that direction.

While Maryland no longer issues official numerical rankings for its 24 school systems, Dorchester’s performance has improved from the 23rd position identified in its earlier internal analysis. The district’s overall score continues to rise, reflecting steady progress toward the goals outlined in its strategic improvement plan.

Sunday Speaker Series with Nancy Lynch & Lon Holmberg at Dorchester Center for the Arts

2025DCA-Women-VeteransVietnam image

The Dorchester Center for the Arts presents, the Sunday Speaker Series featuring Nancy E. Lynch and Lon Holmberg, "The REAL Women Veterans of Vietnam".

Join us for this two-author presentation! Followed by tea and scones.

THE REAL WOMEN VETERANS OF VIETNAM Journalist Nancy E. Lynch is the author of the award-winning social history, “Vietnam Mailbag, Voices From the War: 1968-1972”. Lynch’s 456-page book is based on the nearly 1,000 letters and hundreds of pictures her popular newspaper column received from our troops on the front lines during the Vietnam War. In her final column in December 1972 she promised “her guys” she would some day put all their correspondence and pictures in a book to honor them. Released on Veterans Day 2008, “Vietnam Mailbag” fulfilled her pledge. In 2009, her tribute, dedicated to all Vietnam veterans, won the first place gold medal from the Independent Publisher Book Awards competition for Best Non-Fiction in the Mid-Atlantic. Lynch, a Delaware resident, travels extensively to increase awareness of the service and sacrif ices of our Vietnam veterans. The University of Delaware graduate began her writing career as a staff reporter for The News Journal in Wilmington, Delaware. For five years her celebrated column, “Nancy’s Vietnam Mailbag,” afforded our troops a unique opportunity to let those at home know where they stood on issues ranging from the war to the weather. Lynch’s column is believed to have been the only of its kind in the country during the unpopular war. A freelance writer for many years, Lynch has contributed numerous articles to regional publications and magazines. Nancy Lynch has written seven books, all non-fiction, and lives in Bethel, DE

For All Seasons Brings Awareness to Mental Health Challenges of Family Members and Caregivers of Vet

In honor of Veterans’ Day this month, For All Seasons is bringing the focus to the mental health of families and caregivers of veterans, active service, and reserve members who can experience a unique set of challenges, stressors, and traumas, from deployment and combat to reintegrating into civilian life after leaving the military.

According to Timothy Nowicki, a licensed clinician at For All Seasons, family members of veterans and service members have varying experiences and perspectives on how the military experience affects them.

“Veterans often have intense jobs and need to learn more about the mind-body connection, particularly as it relates to trauma, when reintegrating into civilian life and their homelives,” Nowicki shares.

“Those who have served have followed a military chain of command, and learning to manage the fluidity of familial relationships can be challenging,” he adds.

Other family stressors for active service members’ and veterans’ families include extended and repeated deployments, financial and housing instability, and food shortages – all risk factors for poor mental health. Caregivers of veterans also have an increased risk of developing depression and anxiety themselves.

Donors are encouraged to include the name of their “angel,” which will be handwritten on an ornament and displayed throughout the holiday season.

The 2025 Be an Angel campaign launched on November 3 and will run through December 31. During this time, angel ornaments will adorn Coastal Hospice Christmas trees displayed across the four Lower Eastern Shore counties we serve: Dorchester, Somerset, Worcester, and Wicomico.

Dorchester Education Foundation Launches Wyatt Scholarship

Wyatts-scaled image

The Dorchester Education Foundation launched its first major public event on Saturday, November 8, with a waterfront fundraiser that combined community spirit, gratitude, and a strong commitment to local education.

Held at the Lee Creek home of Foundation board member Steve Heyneman, the gathering drew educators, civic leaders, business supporters, and alumni of Dorchester County Public Schools.

The highlight of the event was the public launch of the John Wyatt Scholars Program, a new scholarship honoring the late Dorchester-based philanthropist John Wyatt. Introduced by Wyatt’s son, Matt, the initiative will provide $10,000 annually to students who excel in community service, and it provides a solid base for the new organization.

Matt Wyatt described the scholarship as a way to continue his father’s legacy of supporting young people, especially those who devote their time to education.

“My father passed away in May after a long battle with cancer,” Wyatt said. “Since then, our family has worked to continue his mission through the J2W Foundation. His relationships with the youth of Dorchester and the resulting impact on this community were among the most treasured achievements of his life.”

He said his father’s work in the county focused on early childhood education, mentoring, and out-of-school learning opportunities. “He was someone who could take big ideas and turn them into practical goals,” he said. “Even when results weren’t immediate, he never stopped believing in the potential of this county’s young people.”

Wyatt noted that recent student assessment results reflect that long-term investment. Third-grade reading scores have risen 17 percent and math scores 10 percent over the past year, the highest gains of any Maryland county. “He would have been overjoyed to see this progress,” he said. “The scholarship will help students take their next step while reinforcing the importance of service to others.”

Chris Wheedleton, who serves on both the county Board of Education and the Foundation’s board of directors, said the Wyatt Scholars Program will reward students who exceed Maryland’s 75-hour service learning requirement.

Foster Dog Mom Offers Haven For Rescues

Baywater Animal Rescue wouldn’t be the same without one of their most devoted foster heroes, Shelby Scrivani. Whether helping shy pups come out of their shells or offering senior dogs a cozy place to rest, Scrivani has opened her heart and home to those who need that extra bit of care before finding their forever families. Her compassion and consistency have given dozens of animals the chance to decompress, heal, and discover trust.

In this interview, Scrivani, a government geographer who works from home, shares what fostering means to her—and how a little love can change a dog’s life.

Why did you decide to do fostering in the first place?

Well, we started in, like, 2021, I think. I used to work in an office, but, when Covid happened, they sent us home, and they told us that we wouldn’t need to come back, that we were gonna work from home, sort of indefinitely. And so everything sort of changed—like, what my schedule was—pretty quickly.

And so I think on Facebook, I started to see posts from Baywater, and they had this program that was, like—I don’t know what they officially call it, but it’s like, “check a dog out for a weekend” type program. And so I started just doing that at first. Our first foster—I knew nothing about anything back then.

East New Market Holds First Veteran’s Day Ceremony

(EAST NEW MARKET, Md) – Communities across the country are honoring their veterans as part of Veterans Day. And in East New Market, they’re joining that tradition as they hold their first Veterans Day ceremony.

East New Market Mayor, Gary Lucks says holding this ceremony was important for the veterans of North Dorchester County. He wants a way to honor them without needing to drive to ceremonies in Salisbury or Cambridge.

Mayor Lucks tells WMDT, “So I said, ‘why not do something here for them so they can enjoy it right in their hometown? And honor them?’ That that’s the biggest thing is they need to be honored and thanked.”

Mayor Lucks said if even a dozen people showed up Tuesday, it would be a success.

More than 20 people braved the cold temperatures and high winds to honor those who’ve served.

Junior Achievement hosts Leadership Academy

CAMBRIDGE, Md. — More than 400 high school students joined Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore at its Leadership Academy on Tuesday. The leadership development event provided students with hands-on learning experiences and a chance to network with potential mentors.

This is the fourth year Junior Achievement has hosted the event for high schoolers on Delmarva. Erin Williamson, Junior Achievement’s advancement manager, said the academy is an opportunity for students to make connections and explore different career options.

“We connect students with local business and community leaders. They have the opportunity to network and really learn the value and importance of networking for their future,” Williamson said.

Students from 21 schools attended the event in Cambridge. Business and community leaders representing various sectors across Delmarva speed-networked with students and spoke at breakout sessions.

“High school only teaches you a certain amount of things, and if I had somebody like me who could at least give me a little more insight on what the real world is like and what to expect, it would have been a heck of a lot better,” said entrepreneur and guest speaker CJ Faison.

Organizers say their goal is to show students the many opportunities that await them on Delmarva.

The Sunday Speaker Series

CROSSING THE PASS OF CLOUDS: An Army Photographer’s Vietnam Journal This book is an intimate portrait of the last years of the Vietnam War in 147 black-and-white pictures and a series of vignettes written by photographer Lon Holmberg. As the photographer for American Commanding General Creighton Abrams, Holmberg had the opportunity to document pivotal moments involving a range of influential historical figures. Among the many remarkable images Holmberg has captured are photographs of South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu, US Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird, and National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger during his journey to China, a trip that paved the way for President Nixon’s historic visit the following year. Holmberg recounts his assignment in the Ashau Valley in the north (a significant infiltration route for the North Vietnamese Army); a daring reconnaissance mission across the border in Laos; and his time at a firebase in central Vietnam near the enigmatic Hai Van Pass (known in English as the Pass of Clouds). Yet even as Holmberg’s photographs look squarely at the realities of war, they also explore beyond it, illuminating the faded elegance of Saigon, the lives of indigenous communities and of farmers working in fields, and the eventual transition of Vietnam into an industrialized society. Lon Holmberg is a documentary photographer and filmmaker whose work includes the PBS documentaries Doing Time and Mending Hearts. He resides on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Pleasant Holidays Tricky Tray

The second annual “Pleasant Holidays Tricky Tray” will be held at Pleasant Day Medical Adult Day Care on Sunday, November 23, at the facility at 2474 Cambridge Beltway from 2-4 p.m.

The holiday fundraiser enables Pleasant Day staff to give the program’s participants lots of Christmas cheer.

Handmade wreaths will be a major feature of the event as well as centerpieces and tabletop trees. Gift certificates, gift baskets and items donated by area businesses will accompany the selection of handcrafted items.

As the holidays grow near, participants make wish lists and Santa brings each of them a wrapped gift from their list. Donations and funds raised by the tricky tray also help provide a Christmas dinner with roast turkey and all the trimmings. Funds will also be used to take participants on trips for special activities including a special annual trip to the Ocean City boardwalk.

Past sponsors, wreath makers, auction donors and the public are being asked to consider donating to the “Pleasant Holidays” fundraiser.

Pleasant Day Medical Adult Day Care, a 501c3 organization, provides an environment that allows people to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible. Nursing care under a physician’s direction increases the quality of life for participants by allowing them to remain at home or with family for a longer time. With over 30 years of experience with those who have chronic medical conditions, including Alzheimer’s, Pleasant Day is a natural step between healthy living and a 24-hour care facility.
