Dorchester Chamber Preparing for 5th Annual Ice & Oyster Fest in January

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – The Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce is getting things set for one of its biggest new traditions.

The Chamber is getting the word out now for their 5th Annual Ice and Oyster Festival taking place in January.

This Small Town in Maryland Is the Perfect Late Fall Getaway—and It's Less Than 2 Hours From Washington D.C.

TAL-lead-image-CAMBRIDGEMD1025-472e970bcaea4132aae9808164e7e4b3 image

Maryland’s Eastern Shore, located an hour east of Washington, D.C., is known for its charming waterfront towns, seafood restaurants, and diverse wildlife. While St. Michaels and Easton may be more well-known names in the area, there’s another destination worth a visit just a short drive away: Cambridge, a historic port city on the Choptank River.

Founded in the late 1600s, Cambridge has a vibrant downtown dining scene, epic outdoor pursuits, and a T+L reader favorite resort. It's also the site of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, a major stop on the Atlantic Flyway as birds migrate south. Every November, more than 35,000 geese and 15,000 ducks can be spotted here. Blackwater's 30,000 acres are home to more than 250 bird species, including one of the largest bald eagle populations in the world. Visitors can explore Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge by bike, kayak, or on foot, and learn about its storied history and most famous resident, Harriet Tubman, who was born and raised on a nearby farm.

Although Cambridge has a population of roughly 13,000, it is located in one of the most rural counties in the state, a fact that lifelong resident and naturalist Matt Meredith says contributes to its authenticity. “The culture of the Eastern Shore is intact here, from the agriculture to the working watermen to the preserved historical sites,” he tells Travel + Leisure. Meredith’s family has owned land here since the 1600s, and he calls a visit to Blackwater, with its marshes, forests, and abundant wildlife, “a chance to see the landscape of the Eastern Shore in full effect.”

Read on to discover why Cambridge is the perfect coastal fall escape.

A Cambridge Power Couple

TAL-lead-image-CAMBRIDGEMD1025-472e970bcaea4132aae9808164e7e4b3 image

In Cambridge, a place where people notice who shows up, who follows through, and who treats others well, Bernard and Danielle Johnson are familiar names.

Their four businesses are a steady presence in the city’s commercial life, and their willingness to help where they are needed has made them leaders across the community. Customers, colleagues, and local officials describe them much the same way: reliable, generous with their time, and committed to helping Cambridge thrive.

Dorchester Chamber of Commerce president Bill Christopher often brings Bernard and Danielle with him when he speaks at local schools.

“They both go on school visits with me regularly,” Christopher said. Bernard is great at working with the kids. He has a compelling story about how he got to where he is in his life, and it resonates very well with students.”

Christopher has watched the couple grow from single-shop operators into employers with contracts in several states, all while taking on greater civic responsibility.

A Local Odyssey: One Woman’s Life with Breast Cancer – Part 1

For most of her career, Beth Anne Dorman has been the one whom other people turn to in their hardest moments. As the CEO of For All Seasons and a clinician by training, she’s spent decades helping families navigate fear, trauma, and uncertainty. But when she found a lump this spring and received her cancer diagnosis in the middle of an ordinary July afternoon—parked at a baseball field beside her son—the roles reversed with dizzying speed.

In a conversation with Val Cavalheri, Beth Anne speaks with the kind of honesty that catches you off guard. She walks us through the punch-in-the-stomach moment of hearing the word “cancer,” the long week she waited before telling her children, and the careful balance of being vulnerable at home while steadying an 85-person staff at work. There are flashes of humor, too, the kind that families reach for when the ground shifts beneath them, along with the complicated truth that even without chemo, a bilateral mastectomy and a decade of hormone therapy remake your sense of self.

What emerges is not just a medical timeline but a portrait of leadership and humanity—how you let people in, how you accept help, and how you learn to live with a diagnosis that never fully leaves the room. It’s also a reminder, as Beth Anne says, that talking openly about illness and mental health isn’t a weakness. It’s the thing that keeps us connected.

This video is approximately 16 minutes in length. For more information about breast cancer, please go here.

Ground Broken For Three Cultures Center at Handsell

In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, the Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance (NHPA) welcomed visitors to the Handsell Historic Site in Vienna for its annual Autumn Open House on November 8, a day dedicated to exploring the intertwined stories of Native American, African American, and Colonial heritage on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The centerpiece of the event was the groundbreaking for the long-planned Three Cultures Center on a plot of land just a few feet from the Handsell house.

A project five years in the making, the new barn-like building will provide much-needed office and meeting space for the entirely volunteer-run NHPA, along with storage and restrooms—amenities that will expand the organization’s capacity for hosting workshops, lectures, and other educational programs.

Richardson Maritime Museum Reflects on Being Named Organization of the Year

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Dorchester County is honoring the members of their community who are helping to help define the area’s culture.

It’s the Heart of Chesapeake Heritage Area Award.

For the Richardson Maritime Museum, the last couple of years have been an uphill battle. Thursday night, the museum is the 2025 Heart of the Chesapeake Heritage Area’s Organization of the Year.

And they’ve accomplished a lot in the last 12 months.

Museum Executive Director, Debbie Usab tells WMDT, “Our goals for 2025 were to get open, to get something open so that the public can come in and visit it, and to get our education programs running. And, and we’ve been able to meet those goals.”

The Heart of the Chesapeake Awards highlights those who positively impact the culture of Dorchester County.

In the case of the Richardson Maritime Museum, it’s highlighting the history of Dorchester County on the waters of the Chesapeake.

Salvation Army Kicks Off Red Kettle Drive

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – The official start of the holiday season is just a couple of weeks away. And one group is ready to take to the streets for one staple of giving.

Wednesday is the start of something that’s a holiday staple in any community as the Salvation Army is kicking off their red Kettle Drive.

Starting Thursday, over 75 volunteers from various groups across the Mid-Shore will be out at a few popular places over the next few weeks. Where they’ll be ringing the bell for donations.

This is the biggest fundraiser for the Salvation Army.

And Major David Lorenzo, who oversees the Salvation Army of Cambridge is looking forward to all those across the Mid-Shore coming together to lend a hand.

“I mean, we have been serving the Mid-Shore for 113 year plus. So when we see the community come in coming along and volunteering and helping us arrange it recently, the funding, it is just encouraging,” says Lorenzo.

Volunteers are coming from all across the Mid-Shore, making this feel like a united effort this holiday season.

Pleasant Holidays Tricky Tray

The second annual “Pleasant Holidays Tricky Tray” will be held at Pleasant Day Medical Adult Day Care on Sunday, November 23, at the facility at 2474 Cambridge Beltway from 2-4 p.m.

The holiday fundraiser enables Pleasant Day staff to give the program’s participants lots of Christmas cheer.

Handmade wreaths will be a major feature of the event as well as centerpieces and tabletop trees. Gift certificates, gift baskets and items donated by area businesses will accompany the selection of handcrafted items.

As the holidays grow near, participants make wish lists and Santa brings each of them a wrapped gift from their list. Donations and funds raised by the tricky tray also help provide a Christmas dinner with roast turkey and all the trimmings. Funds will also be used to take participants on trips for special activities including a special annual trip to the Ocean City boardwalk.

Past sponsors, wreath makers, auction donors and the public are being asked to consider donating to the “Pleasant Holidays” fundraiser.

Pleasant Day Medical Adult Day Care, a 501c3 organization, provides an environment that allows people to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible. Nursing care under a physician’s direction increases the quality of life for participants by allowing them to remain at home or with family for a longer time. With over 30 years of experience with those who have chronic medical conditions, including Alzheimer’s, Pleasant Day is a natural step between healthy living and a 24-hour care facility.

Small Business Saturday

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

Small Business Saturday reminds us of the prime shopping opportunities right in our own communities. Not only do the small businesses where we work, live, and play offer numerous gift-giving possibilities, they are hands-on and ready to complete your shopping list with quality, thoughtful gifts.

Every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Shop Small movement energizes small business owners to prepare for customers in every way possible. That includes the traditional brick-and-mortar customer and the online shopper. The single-day event continues to grow each year. That means business owners are ready for you to shop their stores!

Here is information on how you can participate
