Veterans Day is for honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with holidays in several countries, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which also occur on the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of WWI were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

The first Armistice Day was held November 11, 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson issued a message to his countrymen in whih he expressed what he felt the day meant to Americans.

Women Supporting Women celebrates a successful October

Women Supporting Women is celebrating a busy Breast Cancer Awareness Month filled with fundraising and events to spread awareness.

The group raised tens of thousands of dollars to support survivors through its events, as well as others who have been affected by breast cancer on the Eastern Shore.

“So far, the fundraising has been amazing. We’re still waiting on some of those numbers to come in, but it has been a very successful October for us, and we could not thank this community, our sponsors, our survivors and anyone who supports this organization more,” said Marketing Coordinator Raven Cook.

She added, “We’ve had the 24th annual Walk for Awareness, which was held in mid-October. We raised well over $20,000 from that event, and we had great support from the community and our survivors, who always come out and show up for us.”

Women Supporting Women is hosting a Breast Cancer 101 Educational Conference Saturday, Nov. 1.

Giving and Growing: Robbin Hill Reflects on 24 Years at Mid-Shore Community Foundation

Each year, Robbin Hill asks her two adult sons, “Where should we give this year?”

It’s a question she’s spent nearly 24 years asking on behalf of a region. Now the Mid-Shore Community Foundations’ first employee has retired from the organization.

Hill joined MSCF in 2001, at a time when the organization had no permanent staff and operated entirely through volunteer leadership. Her interview for the position took place on Sept. 12, 2001, the day after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. At the time, she said she sensed that something meaningful was underway.

“If this is real, it could be really great,” Hill recalled telling her husband that evening.

Hired alongside MSCF’s first president, Hill was part of the organization’s shift from an all-volunteer board to a staffed philanthropic foundation. Over the course of her tenure, MSCF grew significantly in both scope and scale, increasing its assets by more than $150 million and expanding its services to donors and nonprofits across the Mid-Shore region.

In the early years, MSCF operated without a dedicated office. Hill’s interview was held in the lobby of the Tidewater Inn in Easton. A few years later, the organization received the gift of the Bullitt House, which became its permanent home.

“At the time, we were so poor we weren’t sure whether to sell it or mortgage it,” Hill said. “But it was a game-changer.”

Hill held the title “foundation manager,” a role that encompassed a wide range of responsibilities in the absence of clearly defined job descriptions. Over time, she took on leadership of MSCF’s grants and scholarship programs and helped modernize the organization’s operations.

This new location, conveniently situated on the corner of Route 50 and Main Street, represents a significant expansion of the bank's commitment to the Eastern Shore, providing easily accessible, comprehensive financial services to the greater Ocean City and Berlin areas.

“This expansion allows us to better serve the growing financial needs of the Berlin community,” stated Jennifer Poulsen, President and CEO of Hebron Savings Bank. “You’ll find the same proven, personal service that has helped communities on the Eastern Shore for over a century. We look forward to serving neighbors, actively supporting local organizations, and becoming your trusted financial partner in the Berlin area.”

In a demonstration of its dedication to active community stewardship, Hebron Savings Bank presented a special donation to Assateague Coastal Trust during the Grand Opening event. This donation recognizes the organization’s efforts to protect the coastal environment and culture of the surrounding region.

Dorchester Co. Burial Site Preservation Board Holding Gravesite Tours

(CHURCH CREEK, Md) – Some of the headstones at the Old Trinity Church cemetery in Church Creek have been there for decades, if not centuries.

And as Reverend Daniel Dunlap tells us, some of them have seen better days.

“It’s a lot of upkeep. I wish we could say that we could repair every stone in a timely fashion. But it’s just impossible to to do. Especially with some of the stones as old as they are,” says Dunlap.

That’s why a group of board members who make up the Dorchester County Burial Site Preservation Board are hoping to correct the course.

Inviting the community to tour grave sites in Church Creek, with the goal of re-establishing the board as part of the county.

“All That Glitters 2025” Returns to Main Street Gallery

For the fourth consecutive year, Main Street Gallery is showcasing All That Glitters: A Metalsmith Collective, a holiday exhibition celebrating the creativity of local jewelry artists. The show opens October 31 at the gallery’s location at 518 Poplar Street and runs through December 28.

This year’s collective features seven jewelers who work primarily in silver, including returning guest artists Alexa Matthai, Chuck McMillin, and Wanda Jester. They are joined by Main Street Gallery member artists Cindy Ayd, Robin Morgan, Linda Starling, and Barbara Trower, who also incorporates glass into her designs.

“All of the work in All That Glitters is locally made,” said Starling, who specializes in beach glass and silver jewelry. “Each of us lives and creates in communities around the Bay, and our pieces reflect that connection—whether through sea glass found along the shoreline or designs inspired by the region’s plants and wildlife.”

The exhibition will be accompanied by artwork from the gallery’s seven member artists. Two receptions will be held on Second Saturdays—November 8 and December 13—from 5 to 8 p.m. Each evening will include a brief artist talk, light refreshments, and an opportunity to meet the makers. Admission is free and open to the public.

Robbin Hill Retires After Nearly 24 Years at Mid-Shore Community Foundation

2025RH image

Robbin Hill, the first employee of the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, has retired after nearly 24 years of service.

Hill joined MSCF in 2001, when the organization had no staff and was led entirely by volunteers. Her interview took place on Sept. 12, 2001 — the day after the 9/11 attacks.

“If this is real, it could be really great,” Hill recalled telling her husband that evening.

Hired alongside MSCF’s first president, she helped guide the organization’s shift from a volunteer-run effort to a professional philanthropic foundation. Over the next two decades, MSCF grew its assets by more than $150 million and expanded its services to donors and nonprofits across the Mid-Shore region.

In the early years, MSCF had no permanent office. Hill’s interview was held in the lobby of the Tidewater Inn. A few years later, the foundation was gifted the Bullitt House, which became its headquarters.

“At the time, we were so poor we weren’t sure whether to sell it or mortgage it,” she said. “But it was a game-changer.”

Hill helped develop MSCF’s grantmaking and scholarship programs and modernize its operations. She led the transition to a fully online scholarship platform, allowing students to match with opportunities based on location, academics, and other criteria.

Joint Op-Ed by Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore and United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore

2025UWLESPamGregory image

Every week, we hear from food pantries, schools, and local nonprofits struggling to meet a growing need: families who simply don’t have enough to eat. These are not strangers or statistics; these are our neighbors.

Those in need include our most vulnerable neighbors—the very young, the elderly, those with disabilities—and those folks who work hard yet still struggle to cover the basics. These working neighbors are part of the ALICE® population (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and here on the Eastern Shore, they’re nearly half of all local households, with an average of 47% struggling across the Lower Shore.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the nation’s first line of defense against hunger. It provides essential grocery assistance to more than 40 million Americans, including about 40,000 people across Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties. These numbers tell a clear story: on the Eastern Shore hunger is a reality facing our neighbors, classmates, coworkers, families.

While charitable organizations do all we can to fill the gaps, the truth is: philanthropy alone cannot solve hunger. We need strong public programs like SNAP to ensure that every family can put healthy food on the table with dignity. For every meal provided by charities, SNAP provides nine. A missed shift to care for a sick child, a car repair, a medical bill—any one of these can tip a working family into crisis.

Road Paving Preparation Begins in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – The City of Cambridge will be undergoing a series of street paving operations in the coming weeks.

Streets are currently organized on a tentative schedule, with milling and preparatory work being done in the days prior to paving. Scheduling may change, depending on weather conditions.

“We know many residents have wondered when their streets will be paved — and we appreciate your patience,” said City Commissioner Brian Roche on social media. “Both the current and prior City Councils have worked diligently to reintroduce and follow the paving plan developed by our engineering consultants, which ensures streets are resurfaced in the order of greatest need. This approach is the most cost-effective and responsible use of taxpayer funds and helps us make steady, fair progress citywide.”

The City thanks its residents for their patience and cooperation during this project.

Flags for Veteran's Day

In honor of Veterans Day, we invite you to join us in celebrating the remarkable contributions of our Veterans. As a token of our gratitude, we are offering a complimentary 4"x6" United States flag to all who stop by our office at 306 High Street, Cambridge, MD (while supplies last). We believe in the power of connection and collaboration among local businesses and residents, and we encourage you to take part in this special tribute. Join us in honoring those who have bravely served our nation, and let’s come together to strengthen the bonds that make our community truly exceptional.

The first Armistice Day was held November 11, 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson issued a message to his countrymen in while h he expressed what he felt the day meant to Americans.

The Sunday Speaker Series

Join the Dorchester Center for the Arts for this two-author presentation! Followed by tea and scones.

THE REAL WOMEN VETERANS OF VIETNAM Journalist Nancy E. Lynch is the author of the award-winning social history, “Vietnam Mailbag, Voices From the War: 1968-1972”. Lynch’s 456-page book is based on the nearly 1,000 letters and hundreds of pictures her popular newspaper column received from our troops on the front lines during the Vietnam War. In her final column in December 1972 she promised “her guys” she would some day put all their correspondence and pictures in a book to honor them. Released on Veterans Day 2008, “Vietnam Mailbag” fulfilled her pledge. In 2009, her tribute, dedicated to all Vietnam veterans, won the first place gold medal from the Independent Publisher Book Awards competition for Best Non-Fiction in the Mid-Atlantic. Lynch, a Delaware resident, travels extensively to increase awareness of the service and sacrif ices of our Vietnam veterans. The University of Delaware graduate began her writing career as a staff reporter for The News Journal in Wilmington, Delaware. For five years her celebrated column, “Nancy’s Vietnam Mailbag,” afforded our troops a unique opportunity to let those at home know where they stood on issues ranging from the war to the weather. Lynch’s column is believed to have been the only of its kind in the country during the unpopular war. A freelance writer for many years, Lynch has contributed numerous articles to regional publications and magazines. Nancy Lynch has written seven books, all non-fiction, and lives in Bethel, DE

CROSSING THE PASS OF CLOUDS: An Army Photographer’s Vietnam Journal This book is an intimate portrait of the last years of the Vietnam War in 147 black-and-white pictures and a series of vignettes written by photographer Lon Holmberg. As the photographer for American Commanding General Creighton Abrams, Holmberg had the opportunity to document pivotal moments involving a range of influential historical figures. Among the many remarkable images Holmberg has captured are photographs of South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu, US Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird, and National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger during his journey to China, a trip that paved the way for President Nixon’s historic visit the following year. Holmberg recounts his assignment in the Ashau Valley in the north (a significant infiltration route for the North Vietnamese Army); a daring reconnaissance mission across the border in Laos; and his time at a firebase in central Vietnam near the enigmatic Hai Van Pass (known in English as the Pass of Clouds). Yet even as Holmberg’s photographs look squarely at the realities of war, they also explore beyond it, illuminating the faded elegance of Saigon, the lives of indigenous communities and of farmers working in fields, and the eventual transition of Vietnam into an industrialized society. Lon Holmberg is a documentary photographer and filmmaker whose work includes the PBS documentaries Doing Time and Mending Hearts. He resides on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
