Cannabis cultivation is taking root on Maryland's Eastern Shore
CAMBRIDGE, Md. – Agriculture has long been the backbone of the Eastern Shore, with corn and soybeans dominating local fields. But a new crop is starting to make its mark: cannabis.
At Culta’s growing facility in Cambridge, cultivation managers Santiago Rodriguez and Maggie McBain are part of a growing industry that blends traditional farming methods with cutting-edge techniques.
Santiago manages the plants grown outdoors.
"It’s farming in the sense that we are at the mercy of the weather," Rodriguez said. "The plants are out here for four months, and in those four months, just about anything can happen."
While McBain is responsible for the plants grown inside.

Dorchester Co. Groups Preparing to Give Back for the Holidays
(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – While the holiday season may still be a couple of months away, in Dorchester County, groups like the Salvation Army in Cambridge are already preparing for how they’re to give back this holiday season.
At the Cambridge Salvation Army, work is already underway. They’re getting ready to help more kids through their Angel Tree Program than in previous years. Nearly 400 kids have signed up across the Mid-Shore area.
“So usually the numbers’ in the 200 to 250 range there. But it kind of just speaks on on the financial stress that everybody’s dealing with right now,” says Troy Paul with the Salvation Army.
Over at the Rescue Fire Company, they’re preparing for their giving program. As local firefighters are preparing to help out select Dorchester County families this holiday season.
Mandy Willey is organizing this program for the Rescue Fire Company. She tells us, “We’ve asked people to nominate those they feel could benefit from assistance this holiday season. And we ask for the information and a reason why they feel these individuals could use assistance, because we really do want to give the family a good Christmas.”
The Rescue Fire Company’s Giving Drive is geared towards those who might not be comfortable asking for help.

Francis Gilbert recently opened the Groove City Flea Market, with the goal of revitalizing Race Street.
He’s been set up in the 500 Block of the street the last few weeks.
And he wants to bring this small portion of one of Cambridge’s main streets back to its former glory.

Horn Point Lab Open House Brings Out Kids of All Ages
Under crisp Fall skies last Saturday, October 12, the campus of the Horn Point Laboratory in Cambridge was filled with laughter, questions, and discovery questions as families and visitors, old and young, came together for its annual Open House.
A Dorchester institution for a half-century, the lab is part of the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Research (UMCES). Each autumn, the research institute invites the Dorchester community to step through their doors and into a world of science for a day, so they might better understand and appreciate the wonders of the Chesapeake Bay and its tidelands in their midst.
Scores of children, with parents and grandparents in tow, lined up to see the Oyster Hatchery and touch facsimiles of Bay’s ecological and edible treasures, while others crowded around the digital sandbox or peered into microscopes to spot plankton and get a taste of what scientific research is about.

Speakers Bureau Training
Join the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education's Speakers Bureau!
Want to inspire the next generation? Attend our upcoming training session for the 2025-2026 Speakers Bureau and learn how you can make a difference in Maryland classrooms.
As a volunteer with MBRT’s Speakers Bureau, you have the unique opportunity to bring the real world into the classroom. Imagine the impact your personal story, your challenges, and your career journey can have on a young person at a critical point in their life. By sharing your experiences, you’re doing more than presenting information—you’re showing students what’s possible, sparking new interests, and helping them see their potential.
The difference you’ll make is powerful:
Inspire Career Exploration: Many students are unsure of their next steps. Your story could be the key that unlocks a future in business, technology, healthcare, or beyond.
Build Essential Skills: Through real-world examples, you'll equip students with the knowledge they need to set goals, tackle challenges, and build skills for life beyond school.
Strengthen Community Connections: Your presence in the classroom reinforces a bridge between education and the business world, showing students that their community supports them.
By volunteering just a few hours of your time, you can help shape the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators in Maryland.
Sign up, attend training, and set your goal to visit classrooms! Together, let’s prepare students for tomorrow! #MBRT #VolunteerMD
The program is being offered both in-person and/or virtual at Dorchester Chamber of Commerce
Please RSVP by clicking the REGISTER button, by emailing info@dorchesterchamber.org, or by calling 410-228-3575 to let us know you'll be joining us.
