Flags for Veterans Day

November 11, 2025 - 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Dorchester Chamber of Commerce

306 High Street, Cambridge, MD

In honor of Veterans Day, we invite you to join us in celebrating the remarkable contributions of our Veterans. As a token of our gratitude, we are offering a complimentary 4"x6" United States flag to all who stop by (while supplies last). We believe in the power of connection and collaboration among local businesses and residents, and we encourage you to take part in this special tribute. Join us in honoring those who have bravely served our nation, and let’s come together to strengthen the bonds that make our community truly exceptional.

Veterans Day is for honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with holidays in several countries, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which also occur on the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of WWI were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

The first Armistice Day was held November 11, 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson issued a message to his countrymen in whih he expressed what he felt the day meant to Americans.

All4Love Breaks Ground on Community Hub

e95b34c04439118943ef74413e9988293dfb1f6b-1024x576 image

While it may seem like just an ordinary warehouse on the outside, on the inside, is the newest community hub in Cambridge. One that’s geared towards helping the city’s young adults.

The Warehouse is going to be the new central location for the group All4Love, a Dorchester County based group that was originally founded in 2022. Executive Director, Lucas Thorpe called it a big day for the group as they broke ground.

Thorpe says, “From the jump, we always knew that this was our goal. We always wanted a facility like this ever since we launched. And our community needs it. Our young men need a space like this that they can claim as their own.”

The plan for the Warehouse is to turn it into a half-court basketball gym, classrooms, breakout spaces, and an office for All4Love.

“They know that they have an outlet when they get out of school. Even while they’re in school, they’re getting support from the mentors and the volunteers here. And they they depend on that,” says Maryland Delegate, Sheree Sample-Hughes.

All4Love has done a lot with very little in just a few years time. And the alumni who’ve been through All4Love since day one say they’re happy to see that the group will be able to be a community hub for so many more.

One Mission Cambridge Struggles On in the Face of Reduced Resources

IMG_7211-scaled image

One Mission Cambridge at 614 Race Street was lively when The Spy paid a visit on October 23. People were hanging out in the cafe area where macaroni & cheese and chicken nuggets were being served (the menu changes each week) while others queued up to shop for groceries in the adjoining room.

There has been an uptick in business since government services have been reduced, and the shadow of the government shutdown felt ominous as it threatens food benefits next month.

This organization, formed in June 2022 by a coalition of Christian churches and ministries, helps around 400 people monthly, and those people go home and feed their households. So, One Mission Cambridge really sees that almost 800 people get fed every month.

But that’s not all they do. The back wall of the cafe has job postings on it that visitors can then pursue with the computers and phones that are available. Community partners (such as New Day, New Start) help distribute lunch and other items and sign folks up for their programs. Physical and mental health professionals come in periodically to meet with patients and clients.

“And if people want to come in here as a heating or warming center, as a safe place, that’s what we’re about,” explained Director Krista Pettit. “It’s all about relationship building and getting to know our neighbors, everything that we do.”

Of course, the main draw to One Mission is the opportunity to shop for groceries. Anyone interested signs in with the volunteer staff and then steps over to the next room, where they can find bags, boxes, and carts. They then can select one of each item they need, including meat from the freezer. Pettit says it’s all “set up in an efficient and consistent and dignified manner.” Patrons are allowed to visit the “store” once per month.

Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina, an award-winning waterfront destination nestled on 342 acres of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, is recognized among the Readers’ Choice Award winners by ConventionSouth, a national resource for planning events in the South. The resort is among 502 convention and visitor bureaus, meeting facilities, hotels, and unique venues located throughout the South to receive this year’s Readers’ Choice Award.

“We are honored to be recognized among the top meeting destinations by ConventionSouth magazine,” said Cari Ruppert, Director of Sales, Marketing and Events at Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay. “As the awards are voted on by industry professionals who plan meetings in the South, this award is a testament to the incredible experiences our team works to provide our guests on a daily basis.”

This is the fifth time Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay has received the prestigious recognition. Throughout the year, meeting professionals nominated the meeting sites they believe provide exemplary service for group events. The nominated sites are then compiled into an online ballot where meeting professionals and fans are asked to vote for the best of the best. Participants will meet at the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 8:00 a.m. Tours may last 3 to 4 hours. The birding party typically tours via personal vehicle, stopping at various hotspots around the refuge’s Wildlife Drive. Binoculars and field guides are highly recommended for an enjoyable experience. There is no fee or advanced registration required. For further information, please call the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 410-228-2677 or visit our website at www.fws.gov/refuge/Blackwater.

Flags for Veteran's Day

In honor of Veterans Day, we invite you to join us in celebrating the remarkable contributions of our Veterans. As a token of our gratitude, we are offering a complimentary 4"x6" United States flag to all who stop by our office at 306 High Street, Cambridge, MD (while supplies last).

The first Armistice Day was held November 11, 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson issued a message to his countrymen in while h he expressed what he felt the day meant to Americans.
