Dorchester Co. Goes Purple for Overdose Awareness
(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Another Eastern Shore community is painting the town purple for Overdose Awareness Month.
People were gathering at the Dorchester County building to kick off a month of supporting those battling addiction.
Tuesday is only the start of it, because there’s a list of events going on in Dorchester County throughout the month.
It’s all part of Dorchester County Goes Purple.
From their 10th Annual Recovery Works, to what they call the “Purple Pulpit Day” on September the 14th, involving churches across the county.

Dorchester Co. Goes Purple for Overdose Awareness #2
(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Tuesday, community members and leaders, the Health Department, and even the town crier came together to paint the town purple.
As Dorchester County recognizes Overdose Awareness Month.
Shane Walker who’s been clean for nine years, says having a community lend a hand to those battling addiction is a good step forward.
Shane tells us, “Recognizing that these are the people in your community and that it’s okay to have you know, it’s called a disorder. And that’s a hard word for people to say. But seeing the community be a part of it this way and offering their support.”
Throughout September, the county is holding events, including 10 annual RecoveryWorks to Purple Pulpit Day in partnership with local churches.

Live Green: Horn Point Oyster Hatchery
CAMBRIDGE, Md – The Horn Point Oyster Hatchery is raising oysters to keep their populations afloat.
At the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Horn Point Oyster Hatchery, their mission is to save the oysters. The hatchery has been operating since the 90’s and their director, Stephanie Alexander, walked me through their whole operation, “When we have a spawn we lay them either on a table or put them in our rec system, and we encourage them to start releasing their gametes. This allows us to start sexing them so we can tell if it’s a male or a female by how they’re releasing their babies into the water column.” They use blue and pink clothes pins to determine which one is male and which ones female.
Next, Alexander shows me where the eggs go, “We will count all of the eggs we have collected. We will fertilize them and then we put them into our big larvae tanks. They will be swimming in our big larval tanks for the next two to three weeks.” She tells me each larval tank is about twelve feet deep, they hold ten-thousand gallons of water, and they can put up to a billion eggs in these tanks.

Coastal Hospice’s Coastal Walk & 5K Run Presented by Beachwood, Inc. - Benefiting the Macky & Pam Stansell House of Coastal Hospice
Ocean Pines, MD – September 3, 2025 – Lace up your sneakers and get ready for a morning of fun, fitness, and community spirit! On Saturday, October 18, 2025, Beachwood, Inc. Custom Builders is proud to present the annual Coastal Walk & 5K Run at the breathtaking Assateague State Park.
Sponsored by Assateague State Park & Maryland Park Services, this event combines the beauty of Maryland’s shoreline with the power of local support. Whether you’re a seasoned runner chasing your next personal best or a family looking to stroll the scenic course together, the Coastal Walk & 5K Run offers something for everyone.
Best of all, every step taken benefits the Macky & Pam Stansell House of Coastal Hospice, a state-of-the-art inpatient hospice that has provided comfort and dignity to patients and families on the Lower Eastern Shore.
Participants can choose to compete (or not) in a 2-mile Walk or 5K Run at this year’s event at Assateague State Park. The 5k course run will start on the paved bike path for approximately one mile and then move on to the beach for the remainder of the run. The 2-mile walk will be completely on the paved bike path and will be an out-and-back course. Participants will be able to run down near the water’s edge (hard sand) or up near (but not on) the dunes for soft sand. All ages welcome - bring the whole family. We are excited to have our furry friends run or walk.

Cambridge Waterfront Development, Inc. Shares Update on Cambridge Harbor Project
A small group of citizens gathered on July 31 for a community update with the Cambridge Waterfront Development, Inc. (CWDI) board, where details of the long-term vision for Cambridge Harbor were presented.
Tim Crosby, chair of the CWDI Planning Committee, outlined the development’s framework, which will feature four distinct zones:
• Town Center – a hub for activity and commerce
• Walkable Neighborhoods – designed for vibrant, livable communities
• Maritime Trade – honoring Cambridge’s working waterfront traditions
• Community Recreation – providing space for leisure and family enjoyment
The first major project will be the construction of a boutique hotel, described by CWDI as an essential anchor for Cambridge Harbor. Discussions are underway with a prospective hotelier, with hopes of finalizing an agreement by the end of this year. If design work begins in January, the hotel could open in early 2029.
As development progresses, CWDI aims to attract partners for additional development along Watermen’s Way, envisioned as the commercial core of Cambridge Harbor. Plans include commercial spaces on the ground floor with residential units above. In addition, single-family townhomes will be built along
Byrn Street to complement the existing neighborhood.

Extreme Boat Docking @ Suicide Bridge Restaurant
Boat Docking also known as the Water Rodeo is considered a water sport in which work boats and charter boats compete within their divisions to go from point “A” to get to point “B” and execute a task of tie/lasso of poles for a timed competition. They compete for cash, prizes, trophies and of course bragging rights…. These runs are filled with captains of all ages with some of our youngest captains as young as age 10. This water rodeo is an absolute spectacular to witness and there is truly never a dull moment!!
Raised on the water their whole lives and making a living… these Watermen put their skills to the true test! Rivaling each other Captain vs Captain in EXTREME Boat Docking! You’ve never seen anything like this!!
Proceeds collected goes to the Watermen competing in the Boat Docking at Suicide Bridge Restaurant with a percentage going to Secretary Volunteer Fire Department.
