New Teacher Welcome Bags

Tomorrow: August 2, 2024 - 4:45 pm.

Dorchester Chamber of Commerce

306 High Street, Cambridge, MD

We know school just got out for the summer but planning for the new school year is already underway. One way we help to support DCPS, and the work they are doing to create our next workforce and set of community leaders, is to provide welcome bags for the new teachers each year.

We gather items from the community to put in the bags. If you have logo items that you would like to share with the new teachers (pens, mugs, water bottles, etc.) that would be great. You can also provide gift cards/ certificates for products and services that they can use. We accept monetary donations that we use to purchase items they need to help as they get settled into their new roles at DCPS.

We will need items for 60 new teachers and will need to have the items in by August 2. If you are interested in participating, please reach out to us via phone (410-228-3575) or email at bill@dorchesterchamber.org.

New sign honors Choptank Indian Reservation in Cambridge

66a7d32f31c66 image

CAMBRIDGE — Members of the Nause-Waiwash Band of Indians gathered with state officials to unveil a historical sign honoring the Choptank Indian Reservation and the indigenous ancestors who lived along the Choptank River.

The sign was placed through the Maryland Roadside Historical Markers program, which is managed, in part, by the Maryland Department of Transportation. Chief Donna Abbott of the Nause-Waiwash Band thanked the state for partnering with the nonprofit group — which includes around 300 people who are descendants of the Choptank, Nanticoke and Pocomoke tribes — and led a prayer during the ceremony.

“This sign is more than just words printed on its face,” Abbott said. “It is one of the first steps in telling our own story (and) preserving our history.”

The reservation was occupied by Choptank people throughout the late 1700s and was the “last colonial-era reservation where the Choptank people lived together,” MDOT secretary Paul Wiedefeld told attendees.

Following the unveiling of the sign, a smudging was performed around the sign. It involved the burning of herbs and the guidance of a feather meant to cleanse the surrounding area.

Cambridge Premium Cinemas lowers prices, raises amenities

66901fdf703b5 image

CAMBRIDGE — As the COVID-19 pandemic started to become a memory, Triton Entertainment President Paul Wenger noticed many of the company’s 17 movie theaters showing clear signs of recovery.

Cambridge Premium Cinemas was not one of them.

“Cambridge was lagging compared to some of our locations in our portfolio,” Wenger said.

During the pandemic, priorities changed, which affected the theater industry, he said.

“I get the sense that people sort of forgot about the (Cambridge) theater after the pandemic,” he said. “And I think the perception was that the theater had maybe closed.”

When theaters opened back up to the public, “heavy restrictions” caused the industry to hemorrhage money, Wenger said. According to box office records, theaters in the U.S. and Canada earned an estimated $4.48 billion in 2021 compared to $11.32 billion in 2019.

Baywater Animal Rescue: A Lifeline for Eastern Shore’s Homeless Pets

IMG_2890-scaled image

Just off Bucktown Road in Cambridge, there is a quiet sanctuary with a couple of walking paths beside the driveway and a clearing with several unassuming buildings. It’s the location of one of the oldest charitable organizations on the Eastern Shore.

Founded in 1947 as the Humane Society of Dorchester County by three locals with big hearts, it separated from Dorchester County Animal Control in 2012 and became Baywater Animal Rescue, a nonprofit, no-kill organization whose mission is to provide homeless furry creatures with shelter and care. As their brochure states, Baywater is “a safe place between lost and found.”

They care for approximately 100 to 120 animals at any time, 75 percent of which are cats. The rest are dogs, ferrets, hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits. Most of their yearly intake is strays, surrenders, and transfers from Dorchester County Dog Control. As of this writing, though, they even have a small turtle that was brought in by one of their canines and which they will keep until it is big enough to go to a turtle sanctuary. All told, they rehome about 500 animals each year.

It’s not always easy to do so, however. Some of the residents of Baywater have health or behavioral issues. For example, they’ve had animals who required limb amputation, which meant they would ever after need a different level of activity as well as patience from their human parents.
