Jermaine has been a community activist for over 25 years serving his community. He's also in his 6th year as a Board member for the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce!

While on the Board, Jermaine formed the Delmarva Minority Business Alliance group which is in it's third year.

He is also the Executive Director for Alpha Genesis Community Development Corporation, a local 501(c)3.

One of the newest projects Jermaine and his team are working on is the old Canvasback building. 

Jermaine said it has not been easy, but it's been worth it! We are the change we want to see! Those are his Action words for the last 25 years.

The “AT” stands for Alice Tresa, owner Karen Cartwright’s two grandmothers. Inside shoppers will find a wonderful mix of home decor including new and pre-loved furniture, lamps, rugs, art and accessories with an emphasis on quality craftsmanship. Dorchester Chamber Announces 2022 Spedden Service Award Recipient
The Dorchester Chamber of Commerce presented the 2022 C. Robert “Bob” Spedden Service Award to Greg Whitten at the Annual Meeting on March 16, 2022. 
 
Bob Spedden was a well-known and respected leader in the community. He demonstrated a real passion for the revitalization of the County and Cambridge. He served for several years on the Board of Directors of the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce and was the President in 1980-1981. He also served on the Cambridge Yacht Club Board of Governors, First National Bank Advisory Board, Dorchester Board of Realtors as President, and Director for the Maryland Association of Realtors. Bob founded the Committee of 100 that spawned revitalization efforts including the Dorchester County Visitors Center, the adjacent children's playground, Sailwind's Park, Governor's Hall, Richardson Maritime Museum, Choptank River Lighthouse, Downtown Harriett Tubman Museum, and the Dorchester Skipjack Committee - Nathan of Dorchester. He also served as the 1st President of Sailwinds Park Incorporated. His vision for economic development of Dorchester County also included the re-development of the former Eastern Shore State Hospital property into today's Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa & Marina.

Local Community Colleges and HBCU's Receive Grants from Delmarva Power
MARYLAND– Local colleges and universities are getting a financial boost from Delmarva Power.
The electric company is providing $400,000 to four community colleges and historically Black colleges and universities.
The money will support scholarships, teacher training, and curriculum development for educating the next generation of the energy workforce. University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Wor-Wic Community College are two of the schools getting some of that funding.
“It can have a huge impact on our students who are getting into the energy field and it’s a huge part of the middle skilled workforce that we have here at Wor-Wic and promote increased workforce in our local economy,” Jessica Hales, Director of Development and Executive Director of the Wor-Wic Foundation, said.
Hales said the money will go to their campaign contribution that’s focused on the impact of developing the generation of the middle skilled workforce. She also said this will allow for at least 20 students to receive a scholarship at Wor-Wic.

TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Re-Designated as a Primary Stroke Center
Salisbury - Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a major cause of serious long-term disability. For people suffering from a stroke, time is of the essence, and time is brain.

TidalHealth Peninsula Regional was recently re-designated a Primary Stroke Center by The Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMMS). The Salisbury hospital met all requirements following a recent and thorough survey of its systems, practices and personnel by MIEMMS. The designation is effective for a period of five years.
 
“By renewing its commitment and achieving re-designation as a Maryland Primary Stroke Center, TidalHealth Peninsula Regional is doing its part to ensure the people of the Eastern Shore have access to the finest care,” said Theodore R. Delbridge, MD, MPH, MIEMMS Executive Director. “It represents a dedication to excellence in the care of stroke patient

Cambridge to Hire City Manager
CAMBRIDGE — The commissioners of Cambridge have selected a new city manager, according to an announcement Tuesday from the city.
A statement from acting city manager David Deutsch said the commissioners have picked Thomas Carroll of Silverton, Ohio as the next city manager of Cambridge.
Carroll is currently the Village Manager of Silverton, a first ring suburb of Cincinnati, where he has served since 2014. Like Cambridge, Silverton is a racially diverse community, with a fairly even split between Black and White residents.
According to the statement, Carroll led economic development projects that increased Silverton’s income tax base by 50%, adding 18% to the property tax base, and reversed 50 years of population loss.

CSD to Present 'Into the Woods'
CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge-South Dorchester High School will present “Into the Woods” in multiple performances this weekend.
The performances March 24 through March 27 will be held in the CSDHS auditorium in the school located at 2475 Cambridge Beltway in Cambridge.
The show begins with opening night on Thursday, and additional shows Friday, March 25, and Saturday, March 26, at 7 p.m. The Sunday, March 27, matinee performance is set for 2 p.m.
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $5 for students, and can be reserved by calling 410-228-9224, or purchased at the door.

Cambridge Waterfront Development to host Branding Event in April
Cambridge Waterfront Development continues its progress to meet its mission of developing the waterfront in partnership with the community for the benefit of the community. One of the next crucial steps in that process is the final rebranding of the site. The stakeholder group formed to manage this process has worked diligently to get it to the point where we can share the final three rebranding possibilities with the community and receive their input. That’s where you come in. CAN’s input is critical to the process.

Coastal Hospice Thrift Shop Grand Reopening with Brown Bag Sale
BERLIN, MD – MARCH 18, 2022 – On Friday, March 25, 2022, Coastal Hospice will reopen the Thrift Shop in its entirety while showcasing their new remodel. They will be holding their seasonal Brown Bag Sale on both Friday, March 25 and Saturday, March 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. where you can fill a bag of clothing for $10.

In addition, National Spring Cleaning Week begins March 27 – April 3. This is a great way to support Coastal Hospice and receive a tax deductible donation. The thrift shop is now accepting gently used items in good condition. Donations should be clean, safe and resalable.

Hogan proclaims 2022 'The Year of Harriet Tubman'
CHURCH CREEK — Governor Larry Hogan Saturday officially proclaimed 2022 as “The Year of Harriet Tubman” in Maryland as the state celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of the nation’s most renowned freedom fighter. The governor announced the designation at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center in Church Creek as the kick-off to a full weekend of 200th birthday events celebrating the most famous conductor of the Underground Railroad.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

The City of Cambridge announced the hiring of new City Manager to start in April. Thomas Carroll of Silverton, Ohio will take over the role in Mid-April. Carroll has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia, and two master’s degrees (Public Affairs/City Management and Sociology) from Indiana University. Carroll issued the following statement about his selection: “It is truly an honor to be selected to serve as the city manager of a community with such rich history and natural beauty. I look forward to helping Cambridge leverage its diversity and resources as it seeks to not only maintain, but to enhance the quality of life of its residents. I share Council’s vision regarding economic development, workforce housing, public safety and sustainability, and I eagerly anticipate engaging the community on these objectives. The State Primary Election has once again been pushed out. The new date is July 19, 2022 and that has also extended the filing deadline to April 15th. Click here for more details. This is a very important election and we cannot let the delays lesson our interest in the outcome. We will be working with WHCP and other partners to conduct candidate forums once the field of candidates is finalized. The goal of the sessions will be to help you gain a good understanding of their positions on key issues related to continued growth and success in the business community. Guided Birding Tour at Blackwater

Join a guided birding tour with a veteran birder at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The tours are usually led by either Harry Armistead or Terry Allen. The tours meet at 8am at the Blackwater Visitor Center, 2145 Key Wallace Drive, Cambridge, MD, 21613. Tours may last 3-4 hours. Bring your binoculars and field guides, and dress appropriately for the weather. The birding party will caravan via car to birding hotspots around the Wildlife Drive. Covid protocols must be observed: Masks are required inside federal buildings, and outside on federal land when social distancing cannot be maintained. Free; no registration needed.

The Blackwater Visitor Center is open Tuesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm; closed Mondays and federal holidays. Wildlife Drive and trails are open daily, dawn to dusk. There are some port-a-pots available.

Junior Achievement 2022 Dorchester Bowl-A-Thon

Enjoy an evening on the lanes as Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore presents the 2022 Dorchester Bowl-A-Thon! Build your team and compete against friends, colleagues and fellow bowling enthusiasts. Bowlers are asked to collect pledges for Junior Achievement to help students throughout the area. We hope to raise over $10,000 for Dorchester County youth while putting on an event that is fun for everyone.

Proceeds from the JA Bowl-A-Thon help Junior Achievement to provide financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurial programs to over 13,700 students in six counties on the Eastern Shore.
