Shop Small\Shop Local

November 30

This year celebrates the 15th year of Smal Business Saturday of Supporting Small Business movement.

Remember, shop local whenever possible. When you hand a dollar to a local merchant, you are creating more jobs and spending in our local economy because independent businesses employ more people per dollar of revenue earned than large online stores. Local businesses are also consumers themselves, and they utilize that dollar on other local services like accountants, attorneys, wholesalers, farms, construction companies, etc. thus expanding opportunities for other local entrepreneurs to grow. The growth of the business sector increases the tax base for the local economy thus decreasing the need for increases in local taxes while providing more services. Basically, buying local helps to grow the economy at a faster and more sustainable rate. So, SHOP LOCAL this season.

The Power Of Gratitude And Humility In Business

Quote of the Week:

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow."

Community Thanksgiving Dinner in Dorchester County Brings People Together

67450c957563f image

CAMBRIDGE, MD - With Thanksgiving around the corner, some residents of Dorchester County were able to celebrate early, thanks to One Mission Cambridge, which hosted its second annual community Thanksgiving dinner. The event, held at the Wesleyan Church in Cambridge, drew a large crowd as hungry individuals filed in to enjoy a warm meal.

This year’s event was a significant expansion from last year, with One Mission Cambridge leaders saying it was bigger and better than ever before. "Fellowship and food is needed. We’re at a time when times are difficult, and people need a place to go to feel seen and heard and understood, and often something to eat as well," said Krista Pettit, director of One Mission Cambridge.

Four Eleven Kitchen aims to feed minds and bellies through food access program

673b9e0a9c5ae image

CAMBRIDGE — Amanda Kidd knows the importance of bringing the community to the table.

“A lot of times, we don’t know how the person sitting next to us or across from us, how they could be the answer to a problem that we have,” the Four Eleven Kitchen founder and executive director said in the nonprofit’s licensed commercial shared kitchen.

"And if we never get that opportunity to really engage them, then we don’t know,” she said.

Reducing barriers to resources and opportunities is one of the reasons that Kidd and a group of others started a recurring community supper event in Cambridge in 2016. It’s also one of goals of Feed The People, a local food access program through Four Eleven Kitchen.

Kidd said that through Feed The People, Four Eleven Kitchen aims to feed bellies and feed minds.

Feeding minds entails getting people into the kitchen to learn cooking skills and gather accessible recipe ideas. It entails farm-to-table education, which Four Eleven Kitchen is working on a curriculum for.

Coastal Hospice joins Shore Gives More for Giving Tuesday fundraiser

SALISBURY, Md. – Coastal Hospice is teaming up with the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore for Giving Tuesday. They are one of many non-profits signed up for the Shore Gives More campaign. It’s an online giving event that provides non-profits the opportunity to inspire the community.

Coastal Hospice provides many different services: hospice care, palliative care and bereavement and grief support. They also have programs to help children who have lost an immediate family member.

“Last year we were able to support over 1300 families, patients and families through the toughest time of their lives,” says Coastal Hospice Director of Advancement Kerrie Bunting.

Coastal Hospice started in 1980 and will be celebrating 45 years next year. Officials say 40 percent of all donations they bring in are used towards patient charity care for those who may not be able to pay in full.

Introducing CWDI’s new board members

Cambridge Waterfront Development, Inc, recently ratified three new members to its volunteer Board of Directors. They are Natalie Chabot and Gaver Nichols, both appointed by the City to fill the seats of Rich Zeidman and Dion Banks; and Tim Crosby, appointed by the County to succeed Jeff Powell. The Spy asked these three a few questions about their qualifications for the positions and their views on the Cambridge Harbor project. But first, a little of their background.

Cambridge native Natalie Chabot attended Allegany College of Maryland and is a 2005 graduate of Leadership Maryland. She served as the Director of Economic Development with the City of Cambridge from 2008 to 2015, and she was the Director of Tourism in Caroline, Dorchester, and Alleghany Counties. She has been active on the boards of the Dorchester Center for the Arts, Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area, Sailwinds Park, Inc., Maryland Life Magazine, Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, and the Maryland Coalition of Heritage Areas. She was instrumental in the formation of a non-profit organization to support the mission of Dorchester County’s heritage area and obtained more than $1.2 million in grant funds for the tourism program.

A graduate of Catholic University, architect and planner Tim Crosby is the principal owner and CEO of Crosby & Associates AIA, LLC. He was also the founder and director of The Delmarva Rural Laboratory, Inc. He has over 40 years of experience planning and designing Historic Preservation, Residential, Institutional, Educational, Mixed Use, Life Science, Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology facilities. In an interview, County Council President Lenny Pfeffer said that Crosby is very familiar with the community and that he will “represent the true feelings of the citizens of Dorchester County.”

Virginia Tech grad Gaver Nichols is a licensed architect in several states, certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, and a member of the Northern Virginia American Institute of Architects. He has served on the Maryland Association of Historic District Commissions Board of Directors since 2021. His firm, Gaver Nichols Architect, focuses on additions and renovations to homes and buildings. It was named a top designer in the American Residental Design Awards by the American Institute of Building Design. Cambridge City Council President Lajan Cephas said Nichols’ experience with the local Board of Zoning Appeals will give CWDI the advantage of understanding what’s expected when it comes to zoning.

"I Think We Just Bought A Restaurant" - The Story of a Hoopers Island Staple

Melinda Perry recalled with a smile the moment when her husband Mike broke the news that would change their lives forever.

"He came to me, he was like, "I think I just - I think we just bought a restaurant," she said.

"And I was like, "You did WHAT?"

The Perrys are the proud proprietors of Old Salty's, the iconic Hoopers Island establishment tucked into the quietest corner of the Eastern Shore, at the end of "the road to nowhere," as Mike puts it.

Get here by heading east on route 50, taking a hard right at the Cambridge Walmart, and then - well, just keep going and going, past the churchyards and farm and fields and marshlands.

After a 40 minute ride that cumulates and a roller coaster swoop over the Hooper's Island Bridge, and you'll find yourself at the islands only sit down restaurant with a plump is crab cakes inside the Chesapeake waiting for you.

Students Explore Chesapeake Bay in Hands-On Learning Adventure

673fc34d9be90 image

CROCHERON, MD - Fourteen students embarked on an immersive learning experience Thursday at the Karen Noonan Center, nestled in Dorchester County’s Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Guided by educators and scientists, the students explored the Chesapeake Bay’s ecosystem while gaining insights into its preservation.

Doug Walters, an educator and captain at the Karen Noonan Center with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, emphasized the importance of connecting with the environment.

“If they can build this connection and learn how amazing this is—not just at this location but across the watershed and its rivers and streams—they’ll more likely make decisions that will help improve the bay’s quality,” Walters said.

The students’ day began with lessons on crab pots, studying their design, the types of bait used, and techniques for catching Maryland blue crabs.

Later, the group explored the shoreline through beachcombing, discovering sea glass, animal tracks, various plant species, and even artifacts from long-lost communities now submerged underwater.

Speakers Bureau Training

Join the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education's Speakers Bureau!

Want to inspire the next generation? Attend our upcoming training session for the 2024-2025 Speakers Bureau and learn how you can make a difference in Maryland classrooms.

As a volunteer with MBRT’s Speakers Bureau, you have the unique opportunity to bring the real world into the classroom. Imagine the impact your personal story, your challenges, and your career journey can have on a young person at a critical point in their life. By sharing your experiences, you’re doing more than presenting information—you’re showing students what’s possible, sparking new interests, and helping them see their potential.

The difference you’ll make is powerful:

Inspire Career Exploration: Many students are unsure of their next steps. Your story could be the key that unlocks a future in business, technology, healthcare, or beyond.

Build Essential Skills: Through real-world examples, you'll equip students with the knowledge they need to set goals, tackle challenges, and build skills for life beyond school.

Strengthen Community Connections: Your presence in the classroom reinforces a bridge between education and the business world, showing students that their community supports them.

By volunteering just a few hours of your time, you can help shape the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators in Maryland.

Sign up, attend training, and set your goal to visit classrooms! Visit mbrt.org for more information. Together, let’s prepare students for tomorrow! #MBRT #VolunteerMD

The program is being offered both in-person and/or virtual at Dorchester Chamber of Commerce

TidalHealth's Free Bariatric Seminar

Start your weight-loss journey today

Are you looking to lose weight and kickstart your journey to a healthier, happier life? If so, consider attending a free bariatric seminar hosted by TidalHealth.

These informative sessions, focusing primarily on surgical interventions, also present a pathway to the medical weight loss program for those who find surgery isn’t the right fit for them.

TidalHealth’s free bariatric seminars occur twice a month, with sessions scheduled on the second Thursday at 6 pm and the last Saturday at 9 am.

Led by experienced surgeons, these seminars provide attendees with the chance to meet and engage with a surgeon before leaving the facility.

The duration of the seminars varies, typically lasting between one to two hours, contingent on the number of questions raised by participants. Patients may attend alone or bring a support person.

Attending the seminar serves as a prerequisite for entering the surgical weight-loss program. Patients cannot proceed to consultations with a surgeon without first participating in this informative session.
