ICIC Announces Biden-Harris Administration Maryland Small Business Briefing on 10/11

whitehouse image

On Friday, October 11th from 1:30 – 2:00 pm ET, the White House Office of Public Engagement and Interagency Community Investment Committee (ICIC) invite you to a virtual briefing where we will outline Biden-Harris Administration support and resources for small and minority businesses in Maryland. Please join Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo, Representative Glenn Ivey (D-MD-04), and other officials to discuss how the Administration is working across the federal government and with state and local partners to streamline resources, expand access to capital, and provide technical assistance and training opportunities for small and underserved businesses and entrepreneurs throughout Maryland.

The briefing is the next phase in a series of state-level discussions that build on the progress made during Vice President Kamala Harris’ Economic Opportunity Tour, which took the Vice President around the country to highlight how the Biden-Harris Administration has worked to create economic opportunity by delivering historic investments that have supported communities and helped people thrive. This includes making unprecedented investments in small businesses resulting in the fastest growth of Black-owned small businesses in more than 30 years. Together, the President and Vice President have generated a record number of jobs, increased access to capital for underserved communities, invested in infrastructure, cut the price of insulin and expanded access to health care, forgiven more student loan debt than any administration in history and boosted investments in education, making housing more affordable, lowering child care costs, and increasing the wealth of American families.

Let’s Talk About It: The reality of intergenerational trauma with For All Seasons CEO Beth Anne Dorman

Some wonderful things get passed on from generation to generation in families, but that is not the case with intergenerational trauma. The consequences of inheriting the pattern of mental illness and abuse spanning over decades have been tragic for Mid-Shore families, and Beth Anne Dorman sees this firsthand at For All Seasons every day.

In our continuing series in partnership with For All Seasons, the Mid-Shore’s largest mental health provider, Beth Anne addresses the very real realities of passing down unhealthy family dynamics and the crippling impact it has on parents and their children.

This video is approximately eight minutes in length. For more information about For All Seasons, please go here

New Name for Invasive Fish Takes Effect in Maryland

66fc7a07d74ba image

MARYLAND - October 1st marked the first day that the Northern Snakehead fish's new name, the 'Chesapeake Channa', took effect in Maryland.

The name change comes after a law was proposed and passed by Maryland legislators earlier this year.

According to officials at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the name change hopes to make the invasive species sound more appetizing. Officials say this, in turn, will hopefully curb the population in Maryland's waterways.

Mason Little is the owner of Choptank River Crab and Oyster Company in Cambridge. Little said the Chesapeake Channa, or Northern Snakehead, is one of their best sellers among both restaurants and individual customers.

"We probably sell upwards to about 100 pounds of snakehead filets out of here," Little said. "Which is surprising to a lot of people. They're ugly but delicious."

Little told WBOC that even he was nervous to try the fish at first, but that the seafood market likely won't change the name anytime soon.

Hurlock celebrates its history with train rides at 32nd annual Fall Fest

HURLOCK, Md. – “People are drawn to trains. I mean, you played with them as a kid, didn’t you?”

Hurlock Town Manager John Avery said the town was incorporated in 1892, on the foundation of two rail lines that ran through its heart.

Now in its 32nd year, more people than ever have come out Fall Fest to celebrate and appreciate that history: “It’s a wonderful thing that this year in particular is probably the best one that we’ve had”

Even with selling out train tickets for the first time ever, Avery said that between the cost insurance, maintenance, and other expenses, the town won’t break even with the train operation.

Luckily profit isn’t why they do it. “It’s a losing proposition in that aspect. But the winning proposition is this– the interest in the town, the people coming in, it’s just a marvelous thing seeing this,” Avery said.

All That Glitters 2024: A Metal Smith Collective

2024MSG-Linda_Starlingseaglassbracelet image

Main Street Gallery is delighted to welcome back for the third year in a row, ALL THAT GLITTERS 2024: A METALSMITH COLLECTIVE. A group of 6 guest jewelry and glass artists along with member artist Linda Starling comprise the collective and all live and create their work in regions around the Bay. On Friday, November 1, ALL THAT GLITTERS opens at the Gallery at 518 Poplar St. in Cambridge with a holiday show featuring a showcase of the artists’ creative and original jewelry and art glass as well as the artwork of the gallery’s eight member artists. The show will run through December 29.

It was early in 2022 that local artist, Linda Starling who is a member of Main Street Gallery and who specializes in beach glass and silver jewelry, envisioned a holiday show at MSG with a group of her Bay area jeweler friends. She invited them to be guests artists that year and ALL THAT GLITTERS was born! That first show was so successful that the group decided to try it again in 2023. Now in 2024 five of the original group, Cindy Ayd, Alexa Matthai, Robin Morgan, Linda Starling and Barbara Trower are back for ALL THAT GLITTERS 2024 and they’re joined by two new artists, Wanda Jester and Charles McMillin. “I am very excited to welcome back my dear and talented jewelry buddies and two new artists to our group” says Linda. “We have all forged new friendships while honing our metalsmithing skills. Visitors to ALL THAT GLITTERS 2024 will be hard pressed not to find something they love or a great gift for someone special.”

Dorchester Chamber of Commerce collects responses from City of Cambridge and Board of Education Election Candidates

2024 is a General Election year with the vote completing locally at 8 pm on November 5th. However, the 2024 City of Cambridge Election is not on the same schedule as the General Election. Voting for the Mayor and all five City Commissioners will happen on Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 7 a.m through 7 p.m. Voting for the City Election will be held at 447 Race Street, Cambridge, MD. You can visit the Chamber website (https://www.dorchesterchamber.org/) for more information on both the General Election and the City of Cambridge Election.

The Dorchester Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee created a series of questions/topics for each of the local offices up for election in 2024. The questions are based on topics the committee believes are of concern to our members. It is by no means meant to be a comprehensive list of all voter concerns but will provide insight on candidate positions on key issues that would have an impact on our community. The questions were provided to all candidates, even those running unopposed, to give all an equal chance to present their positions. The Chamber believes a well-informed public has a better chance of electing the most qualified candidates.

Thirteen of the fourteen candidates running in the City of Cambridge election provided responses. One of the four candidates on the ballot for Board of Education provided responses, two of the four are running unopposed. The responses can be viewed and downloaded from the Chamber website: https://www.dorchesterchamber.org/candidate-questions.

Safe Sitter Program (FREE)

Regional Health (UM SRH) will host a free upcoming Safe Sitter® course in partnership with the Talbot County Health Department. UM SRH is a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System.

The course will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton’s Health Education Center, 219 South Washington Street. This program will be taught by UM SRH Women and Children’s Department skilled nurses and offered to children ages 11 to 13.

The course is designed to prepare students to be safe when they are home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting other children. The instructor-led class is taught using games and role-playing exercises so that students can practice rescue skills. The Talbot County Health Department is providing a grant to cover costs in full for the first 50 students who enroll.

Participants in the program can expect to learn safety skills, including how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies; child care skills, such as tips to manage behavior that will help sitters stay in control of themselves and the children in their care; first aid and rescue skills, including CPR and choking rescue; and life and business skills to help sitters screen potential childcare jobs, discuss fees and greet employers.

To register for the course, email Gladys Peeples at Gladys.Peeples@umm.edu. Early registration is encouraged, as class size is limited. For questions, call Stephanie Blades at 410-822-1000, ext. 5234. Additional Safe Sitter dates will be offered in 2025.

Trunk or Treat - TidalHealth

TidalHealth's Behavioral Health division will host it's 3rd annual Trunk or Treat at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional campus in Salisbury Maryland.

In the hospital's pervious parking lot on the corner of Waverly Drive & Vine Sts, Salisbury, TidalHealth team members and community partners will decorate their vehicles and fill their trunks with Halloween treats for a safe, supervised and family-friendly candy collection. Parents are encouraged to bring their kids from 6-8 pm or until all treats have been distributed. Rain date is Friday, Oct. 25.

Joining in the fun will be Salisbury community partners, including mascots Sherman from the Delmarva Shorebirds and Petey the Peacock from WRDE coast TV. The event will also feature a DJ and music, a food truck, the Heart & Sole Step Team, and Salisbury University Cheer Team. Trunk-or-treaters can also vote for the best-designed trunk.

TidalHealth Behavioral Health team will have information available on their healthcare services including the Crisis Center, the Partial Hospitalizaiton Program and Outpatient Clinic.

All kids are invited, and costumes are encouraged. Parents are responsible for the supervision of their children.

Parking will be available on Old Vine Street in the gravel lots directly across from the TidalHealth Foundation Giving House. No public vehicles will be allowed in the Trunk or Treat area for the safety of participants.

Treat your little ones to a fun, safe and enjoyable early Halloween event from your friends at TidalHealth.
